  • This, to me, is what music is really about. No big orchastra, no synthesizors, no huge backing groups, just one man and his guitar, pouring his heart out. My Dad was always around when I was growing up but now I'm an adult he's moved away and i hardly ever get to see him. So this song really hits home and reminds me how much I miss him.

  • I see the cello guy playing but I can't hear it ;(

  • After hearing Harry say "frankly this song scares me to death" it made me think that I don't ever want to ignore my dads request to spend time together, as of now I'm 21 and my family's been broken up since i was a little boy. We haven't ever gotten to spend time together like we used to. I know my father loves this song and I don't want it to haunt him later in life. But it makes you really stop and think about what happens when you have your own kids!

  • Beautiful!!! Thank you for sharing with us:-)

  • the best song ever!!!!! use to listen to this song as a kid over and over and over and just cry, cause my dad was over seas

  • How can you not like a song like this?

  • They don't make 'em like this anymore.

  • My pastor played this song us to hear - it really brought back memories and it is so true - we are so busy that we don't spend enough time with our love ones ie., mom, dad, brothers, sisters. Thank you Harry Chapin for making me realized what this song really means to all of us.

    God bless.

  • It's a great song but it's just a shame that so many people can relate to it :(

  • I love this song since the first time I ever heard it. As parent we seriously have to be careful how we treat out kids. Biblically it is spot on. Yes we are to honor our Mother & Father BUT afterwords it states "Parents do not provoke your children to wrath. This song to me explains the end results one can experience from your decisions. It is a shame so many will do things to not only their kids but anyone, for it can come back and haunt you!

  • Like others I cry when I Hear it...everytime!

  • I still have my Dad & Mom. I'm as lucky as I'll ever be.

  • this song describes my relationship with my dad perfectly...

  • This is an amazing song thank you for posting this video

  • My dad died when I was 10...I don't remember a lot of him but I sure as hell know I want to be like him!

  • Every summer me and my father used to travel across Norway, and we always used to listen to this song. Every time I hear it, i get tears in my eyes.

  • This song helped make me a better dad. My son Shaun (age 5) would thank Harry if he could and so would I. Thank you Harry and to your wife too, you helped change our lives.

  • About 25 years ago I can remember my Dad playing this song on cassette while going somewhere in his Dodge Omni, as a boy I didn't like the music, than Feb. 2011 at 65, my Dad died suddenly, now I miss these times, hope my Dad and I get together again sometime in the sky.

  • My dad cheated and left my mom in bankruptcy. My first song, out anger for him, was father of mine by everclear. This song helped me heal.

  • @darrius13sniper Its also helped me make a decision. I will never be like my father

  • My favorite. I miss my dad.

  • 3:58 goosebumps

  • I love that he says that this song scares him. I can't tell you how many times I've created some piece of art that touched on something so real that it scared me. ♥ Beautiful song

  • I'm gonna be like u dad, ya know i'm gonna be like u!

  • Just an amazing song. The psychology behind it, is tragic but true.

  • I think this is the fear of every father.

  • 26 people are absent fathers, shame on them!

  • My late Dad was an old intersate truck driver, I know exactly where Harry is coming from. I vowed I'd never be the absent father. I was for a while but not as much as it could have been, sometimes you have to earn the dollar. I miss Dad terribly.

  • Wow. Never ceases to stop and make me think about the world and how people are so caught up in there own problems.

  • I love you dad.

  • The message is so true, parents get caught up in work, bills etc & the years with your kids flies by.

  • I think this is about his dad the famous drummer Jim Chapin.

  • @mapleblackdrums

Harry said it's about him and his son!

  • I cry every time I hear this song...

  • 0:00 replay button......i cant stop listening to this

  • @arowe9369 wats wrong with you?

  • Damn. I'm crying now.

  • I am a dad.....and it's damn scary, how this song is so true!

  • My dad is not the worst but he has done some stuff that I pray I will not repeat. I get very scared when I think about how I will act when I'm married and have kids.

  • When I was young and my dad not being around, I used to cry just thinking about this song let alone hearing it.

  • I will not cry, I will not cry, I will not cry... GOD DAMNIT ...T.T

  • this song in a way reminds me of a way of my dad he is also a musician so he is gone a lot

  • Well I haven't really lost anyone but I had just finished reading Siddhartha. It was amazing when my History teacher played this song. It related to the story so much and I felt a great sadness. Whatever your story is let it be told!

  • So, I wonder how his relationship is now with Josh, his son?.....I think if you can write a song like this....he's been a good father

  • @mjw9363 uh....... Harry Chapin is dead. Has been for years.

  • @mjw9363 He died seven years after this song hit the charts.

  • I felt an emotion in my chest. I... I hardly ever do that.

  • Happy Birthday Harry.

  • I LOVE SERBIA!!!! <3

  • I always tear up to this shit

  • I have always disliked this song. The singer was missing so much of his son's growing up that there was a disconnect. And his son is doing the same thing.

    Sad. Very sad.

  • @geerterri Not sure if serious, but if so...... congratulations, you got the point of the lyrics then.

  • 22 people never had dad's

  • @americanpsycho93 You mean, 23 have perfect dads? :)

  • Well, my parents got divorced recently and this song has helped the healing, even though my dad doesn't realize it, i've moved on from resenting him for the things he has done. early on i was more Father of Mine by Everclear. This song just helped a lot. I'm not angry and i feel sorry because my father, through his own self-destructive ways, isolated himself from the people that cared about him: my mom, my little brother and i

  • Amazing wonderful song. Harry Chapin we miss the likes of you. You left this world way way too young.

  • @Chaotic841: :D :D :D

  • this song reminds me of my little brother..

  • Has ANYONE seen his facial Expression at 3.54??? And here we have "THE JOKER" :D...Hahhahahaha

  • @rahuljo1986 HA! i saw it!

  • my dad used to sing this to me and play the guitar and it brings emotions to me whenever i hear it

  • If you do not play the guitar you maybe do not appreciate how difficult this song is to play on a guitar, due to where the chords of the song are played!

  • My dad died when I was 3, and I'm not a father yet. But this song makes me cry everytime. He died before I could remember anything about him. I can't relate to the lyrics, but yet they mean so much to me.

  • @cbm25 im so sorry...

  • พ่ออยู่ไหน ตอนนี้ลูกเหงา

  • I never even knew my dad and I'm a girl but this makes me cry every time for reasons unknown

  • listening to this song in my dorm room...im homesick. i cant wait to go home for thanksgiving, i miss my family

  • i was fortunate to see harry chapin...this song has always resonated with me since i was i was a single mom...and now he's grown...

  • Harry Chapin was an awesome artist. I saw him 2-3 times in concert in the 1970's. Whatever the venue, he turned it into a warm and intimate experience. One of the greatest of all time.

  • Lol @intheflesh420 badass dad u have.. Lol

  • Good song.. It's true though.. Cycle of life..

  • I sang this song to my father... and he punched me in the face.

  • @intheflesh420 thats awful!

  • Amen to that brother. Example led Zeppelin lasted for over 4 decades lady gaga won't last 2 decades if that. Power o the rock and roll

  • unfortunately my father died when i was 14 so I will never get to experience these things but I still love this song and I think my dad would have loved it too

  • Heard this song recently and it made me cry. Now I am a father of a 10 year autistic son and I am just like my dad and his! I pray he can be like me someday and have a successful and independent life. My dad only played ball once in my life with me but the hurt never goes away! I now know how had it is to break the cycle and really devote yourself to them before they don't care anymore! Don't wait until it is too late!

  • i heard my mom sing this song in the morning and im like "NO! THIS IS A MAN TO MAN SONG!"

  • Wonderful! Amazing song! Deep, too...

  • I was born in 1970, and back when this song came out it was awesome, and now its still awesome. Harry Chapin was a good person and a good singer..........

  • One of the best songs every written, the man's wife was a genius.

  • i love it........................

    อยากให้คุณผู้ชายฟังค่ะจะได้มีเวลาให้ลูกบ้าง

  • My dad died from cancer exactly two years ago. I never really knew him while I was growing up. This song makes me very sad when I hear it - as my dad and I only really had time for each other just before he got sick, and this song is about opportunity lost. I use this song as motivation to spend quality time with my boys (3 of them!). Spent the last three weekends teaching middle son to ride his bike and kicked a ball around with the youngest.

  • Crazy thing is my name is Josh, and my dad worked his ass off on the rail road and I only seen him maybe 2 times every other week, and when I became a man and joined the military I use to say the same things he said to me, Ill see you when I come back, and while on deployment he was diagnosed with Lung Cancer, passed away before I made it home, I remember listening to this song outside of the hospital that night, couldn't stop crying.

  • @Antihippie24 My name is Josh as well and my dad work his ass off as a mechanic and a truck driver. I was at school when my dad was diagnosed with brain cancer and passed away before i was able to say i love you and goodbye. my deepest apologies to you man i some what know how u feel. (Rest In Piece to all fathers who dies from cancer)

  • This song makes me cry, if only because of how true it is.

  • Love this song, no one can hate song like this !

  • This song reminds me of my brother he and his son relationship. We come from a family of laughter & smiles one that has a connection in a positive manner .I pray that when they do see one another the words I LOVE YOU, hugs and kisses should be given onto one another.I saw my nephew tonight , after 30 years of his life he still need his Father Sept 15 & the 16th one turned 50 & the other turned 30years old.How I love them both Robert M. Johnson 4 ever. He Lil' Bobby is my favorite nephew.

  • All parents can relate to this, I know I they are only yound once, dont miss a second !!!!

  • 3:14 sent shivers down my spine. Goddamn.

  • I see the cello there, but I hear nothing. I wonder how that happened?

  • One of only a handful of songs that makes me cry. So many memories of my Dad who passed away from cancer when I was 19.

Thank you Harry for this wonderful song. X

  • I've loved this song for as long as I can remember... hearing Harry's comments make it even better.

  • Beautiful song, thanks.

  • My father is a son of a bitch. And I wont ever be like him.

  • @HankDBDVD We'll see...

  • This song is my life..........I was fortunate enough to live in my fathers foot steps and did very well for myself. Retired today......my father and I are still best of friends............52 yrs. after we first said hello............

  • @inilledra Yea my dad years ago kept saying this song said it all-I was always too busy to do things with him. Now I'm 41 and we are spending time together but cant ever get those times past back. And NOW I am seeing it with my kids. Good song...

  • Sad song mainly my fav. cause the beat.

  • Fuck Scott.

  • How unfair is life...such an amazing and one of the most talented artist dying only at age 38. Truly there will be things I will never understand. What we are all grateful for is his music. It's songs like these that touch touch your heart and remind me why Harry Chapin will always be one of my idols.

Rest in peace Harry Chapin, you deserve it.

  • If this song doesn't scare the hell out of you, you're an idiot. When you're young you want things. When you're old, you will want people. You will reap what you sow.

  • One day, I hope to be 1/100 of the father that my dad is. I love him and my mum, they give me far more love than I deserve.

  • Why cant Mick Jagger sing like this live

  • Introduced this song to my oldest son's father, 18 years later, the song fits them like a glove. Love this song, daughter's relate to it also!

  • Why does this song scare him?

  • @marshall60228 - I guess because rather than looking back with regret as one might do had your son left home, he is imagining what it would be like to live like that and waste those precious years. If you have young children, believe me, what feels like plenty of time slips by in the blink of an eye. Don't waste a single day.

  • Im starting college in less than two days. Fortunately my dad and I have had a pretty good relationship and I can imagine whats going through his head now. He use to coach me a lot when I played ball but I stopped a few years back. I bought two gloves the other day just so we could throw the ball around one more time before I left and I gotta say I loved seeing him light up when I showed him the gloves and said hey lets go have a catch.

  • @SuperCsmith21 I've never hated a person more than right now

  • @SuperCsmith21 damn what i do

  • great song-strange man

  • Reminds me of my dad and me. I ain't got a son yet but when i do i WILL make time for him.

  • @LifeBackintheDay I lost my son, so I've kind of formed a retrospective view. Whilst I'd still hopefully be a firm but fair dad, I would make more effort to praise the good, rather than tending to only pick him up on the bad. I don't feel he'd bear a grudge, but just wish I adopted a more positive approach. Good luck when he does come along ! :-)

  • speachless

  • evrytym i listen to this song..i go back to ma relation wit my dad...nd many a tyms brought tears in ma eyes...this song defintly will make me a bettr fathr wen ma son's born.

  • i cry evrytime i hear it...

  • I still remember as a little kid way way back in the 80's playing this song over and over again on a 45 record and till this day I still love listening to this song

  • It's sound like that " You don't know what you got 'til it's gone" song. BYT

  • If I remember correctly this dude done died in a car accident with a gas truck on the LIE (Long Island Espressway) on the way to a show. What a waste.

  • One of my favorite songs... means even more now that I'm older and have a grown son.

  • sometimes, even though people don't know who you are and may not even care, it's nice to share one's thoughts......makes you feel more human to have a connection................anyway, this song reminds me of you Aubrey....sure miss you

  • i love harry, but this song is the biggest downer EVER;

it's interesting that he doesn't mention his own father

an even greater musician jim chapin

  • @roman14032 I've actually never interpreted this song as being meant to be a downer, though granted it is if you let it be. It is a warning of what can happen if you let it. Your job ends, the things you enjoyed previously fave away, what remains is your family, those you love and who love you. If you nurture those, you life will be better for it

  • Beautiful.

  • RIP Dad

  • I'm sorry for all those who lost there family members... i have never lost a family member so i know that i don't know how it fills. so I'm sorry to y'all people! :(!

  • I love this song...it's so sad but so moving...it's sad that something like this could actually happen... :(

  • The hairs on the back of my neck say dude's not dead.

    Thank you for this.

  • @barrywilliamsmb Yep, you hit the nail on the head :)

  • I swore I'd never let this happen to me, but unfortunately........It's beginning.

  • This song is deep to me because when my mom found out she was pregnant with me she told my real father and he gave her two choices. One being adoption, the other being abortion. She told him to fuck himself and she kept me. But it makes me sad that I never had a father ever. My stepdad was a dick to me.

  • The moral of the story is set aside time for your son and he will set time aside for you. Well in my view. Sad story between a father and son with lifes duties getting in the way of a relationship

  • barats and beratta

  • This song has such a powerful message, and it is so beautiful. I just love it :)

  • @Whubblargh this message NEVER gets old....

  • This is a top tune.
