I had an idea for my refoaming project; to attach a AA battery to the speaker leads to make the speaker bottom out before I glue the cone to the foam to keep the voice-coil perfectly centered. Would that work or could I damage the speaker in some way by doing that?
after all the crap music in the video its good to know that at least the speaker itself will enjoy playing some Windowlicker. I was riding that mute button harder than a ... (insert crude reference here)
@dtp5150 shadup??? its shutup and it work bothe ways contect the speakers my way and it still working why/?? becous the bothe adio +and- is comming to getter in a coil zo it dsn mather
@pCneter if I got a speaker repair back and they inverted the phase 1) I would take it back and they would have to open it all back up again 2) I would never go to the person/shop for repair again. I advise you look up phase issues and also speaker wiring parallel vs series. If you were to insert a speaker that was wired incorrectly into your already configured audio set up it would not function correctly and you would have to relabel your wires or whatever and thats ghetto rigging. + more thing
@pCneter You lose bass if you don't connect it right, plus your left speaker pulses out when your right speaker pulses in so your sound is not as efficient if one is wired opposite the other. A very inferior sound results.
You really should check the cone against the voice coil BEFORE applying the foam, you may have to cut the dust cap & shim the voice coil to prevent screwing the job up, redoing it is WAY harder when there's fresh glue that's dried as opposed to 15-20 year old glue that pretty much rubs off the cone with a little friction
Even though it's more work you should take the dust cap off and shim the voice coil, then glue the surround. I skip this step my first time doing this and ending up having to redo the job because it was off centered.
@WonderHowtodotcom please I need help, I have a pair of old Marantz sp1500s and the 15" woofer on one of them is deteriorating on the top would this work
Would have been helpful if you gave a closeup of the adhesive or stated what kind you are using. Thanks for the video. I"m attempting my first surround replacement tonight. Could not find proper glue. Not sure which to use.
I have memorex 304 12inch bass speaker which I'm about to refoam. But the thing is you put the glue on the front of the speaker then put the foam on. But in my case I have to tuck the speaker foam under the bass speaker and then glue it in. Shall I tuck it under or just refoam it the way your saying?
@ExpertOfSound I actually just sold them but i think it might have just been a normal speaker, but im not sure because it had a big port hole in the back. it kinda looks like a big version of the one in the video on top except it has another small speaker in the middle of both of them. i think it was a jbl and it was pretty old
Oh alright! It was just one of the regular "bookshelf" speaker sets.
If the surround was completely torn apart or had holes in it, then it will matter significantly... since it was ported, it won't matter AS much because of the port noise anyway.
help me i have a old speaker its 5 inch wide and i kinda want to change my old 2 inch speaker on my pc.... is it posible to connect it there and just change the case? i dont know which one is positive or negative cause its pretty old and this speaker is used like i was 8 years old for the vcd... im 15 now lol! i want to fix it cause its been under my computer table for 5 years now after we moved in to another area.... btw.... it looks ok exept for a few rust that i just remove with an ld 40...
Foam rot affected my old TV set, a Thomson of the PSN series, purchased in February 1990. From 2001 it's speakers started making mechanical noises at higher volume levels. I have a new TV set from 2005, but now, in February 2010, i was curious and took the grills off from the old set, and there was no foam left on the cones, 100% pulverized and turned to liquid:) It has two 10 watt oval speakers.
Nice video. I think that's how I did mine years ago and it worked fine, now the front foams are rotting out...Good job. Some real childish comments people.
so i am trying t0 portabilize someting which is pretty old, like 8 i think and the speakers are huge. They have a 2 wire output and (i hope this is important) the 2 wire colors are red and black. Now i think that they could work with my nintendo ds's speaker, which has 2 wire red and black output. i was wondering if i could replace the huge ones with my ds's
Dude take it easy. Kids visit these sites too man. I do agree with you that this is a hack job and made comment about it. However there is no rule that you have to put the glue on the foam edge only. Typically putting glue on the foam edge is the most desirable approach. But there are many times I have had to glue the cone first. It all depends on the what you working with.
I would never buy speakers with a foam surround in the first place. They're know for drying out and falling to pieces, so it's a sign of a cheap design and components
A paper surround dries out and cracks as well and foam. Foam is not the sign of a cheap design. A lot of foam designs are high quality and have sound characteristics that are more desirable to some manufacturers. They flex differently which allows deeper degree of cone movement with less mechanical impedance. A foam edge can be preserved with a dampening solution and can last double its expected lifespan (as long as most edges). Problem is, is that people just wait too long.
I have some mission 707's (old school) and the foam surround has totaly disintagrated as well as them having no gasket, do you think they would work with out one along with a new surroound also the create a horrid scraping sound when moving the cone in and out but i can remove it to clean out the coil =(
The edging is critical in maintaining coil alignment. Otherwise, the coil will rub which can quickly lead to coil damage, crossover damage and amplifier/receiver damage. Never play a speaker with failing edge surround.
Horrid scraping sound? Honestly, you should send them to a pro for servicing. I suggest you don't clean them until you get a better understanding of a speaker's workings and some practice. Good if you know a pro who can help you.
Otherwise;
Recommendation: "Solutions" in Los Angeles is one of the best. (323)666-4161.
However, it definitely takes more to finding the center then just pushing down on the cone. Some woofers can still rub even when they feel like the coil is free. Also, pushing on the cone [even slightly carelessly] is good way of damaging your cone/spider/coil assembly.. Sloppy job on the gluing.
Master1212 is right. Shimming is the best way to assure alignment but I like to do that as a last resort. Its more time consuming that way and one has to make sure nothing gets into the open coil.
Remember you can take off the dust cap, slip some rivets or popsicle sticks in between the voice coil and magnet gap, put on the surround and everything, take the rivets/popsicle sticks out and glue on the dust cap and your done!
Most speaker surround replacement kits come with the glue. (at least they did with the one i used in this video). Just google for speaker surround replacement, there are several sources out there. Good luck. DoDoDodedeetily!
Depends if you have cheap speakers yes... but I have a pair of vintage realistic mach 2 speakers that I'm going to replace the foam in. Or if you have really expensive speakers...
This guy forgot to shim the voice coil (cardstock does the trick) if you don't shim then it WILL scrape regardless of what you feel. Why? Because the coil is now shifted so when the magnetic force causes it to move, it will shift to the side and scrape.
I had an idea for my refoaming project; to attach a AA battery to the speaker leads to make the speaker bottom out before I glue the cone to the foam to keep the voice-coil perfectly centered. Would that work or could I damage the speaker in some way by doing that?

Most annoying 'how to' I have ever seen on youtube.

You never apply glue to the CONE - you apply to the surround instead and center it carefully so you dont have the mess he has made.
There are several other missteps here as well.
