@g2020, I was making a comment on the artist as a whole not just this one song, the fact it's a Daniel Johnston cover is irrelevant, this just happened to be the video I was watching when I heard of Mark's passing. I'm sorry if you weren't able to understand that.
Sparklehorse /Flaming Lips, & Daniel Johnston... (it really doesn't get much better). RIP Sparklehorse leader Mark Linkous, (& ty MLL). "Here we are on this planet, taking everything for granted..."
mark was the first artist i've ever felt true sorrow and emotion for after a death. he definately changed my life. in fact i felt so home with the lyrics that i felt we are connected.. i love you mark
for the past few days, my complete outlook on life has change and the awful reminder that things happen unexpectedly, mark in my opinion in a music scene filled with consumerism and greed , was one of the few musical artists of the past 15 or so years who actually mattered and could actually change people with his surreal lyrics and melancholy tones, music with such beauty and intimacy and passion that should be taught in schools, although we've never met i feel I've lot a great friend r.i.p
how much more gorgeousness am i going to uncover about Mark??? how many more tears can i shed? the more i follow Mark's inspirations, the richer my life is...and yet, how twisted my heart still feels 4 days later...and of course, wayne can totally tap into a song like this-consider 'waiting for a superman'-such beings have truly been 'touched'!
Sparklehorse is totally influenced by daniel johnston. They have a song called cow. They are both known for high pitched/thin singing voices and minimalist, simplistic organ based songs.
In this version, and despite the naive as usual (which is part of his charm of course) Daniel Johnston lyrics, simply the most beautiful love song I know.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I think the only charm that Daniel Johnston has is that some dude told the other dude that he's an indie legend so everyone keeps jumping on that bandwagon. The original version is painful to listen to, his voice, musicianship, and lyrics are hard for even the staunchest indie nerd to abide with a straight face. To all those that think DJ is a god, I have a cd of a 3year old banging on a piano and singing twinkle twinkle little star off key...it's pure indie gold!! You'll love it.
And what does that have to do with the sparklehorse version? Some of dj lyrics for go actually annoy me, like the get married part. there is a naivite to his words that I am not sure if it's immature because of his issues, or a conscious fake naivite that sells. There are still half a dozen of his songs that are rather amazing; people with mental issues (==me for instance) also take to him as his mind is warped. If your admirers include Kurt cobain and sonic youth, you're probably not just a
Also, this is the sparklehorse version of the song, and so an entirely different animal. Linkous' vulnerabilty is rather unique, and he got amazing sense of beauty. Now of course a super duper cool Nyer with no access to his emotions as that wouldn't be cool will disagree and probably go with bright eyes or some shit like that instead. And that's just sad as he does some of the most unique music around currently.
Aesthetics is such a lame thing to bitch about. Personally I love DJ's voice and writing. A lot of people like Kelly Clarkson. I don't, but who the fuck cares. Its like yelling at people that blue is better than red or some other such nonsense. Music prudes are the worst.
that's really not true. Maybe this version is more 'listenable' because of higher production values, etc. But that shows the substance of the original song.
Those who are able to overlook the polish - or lack of - will find Daniel Johnston's music quite compelling.
I don't fully agree with you, but this is the first time I've heard this song or seen this video. (sshhhh.)
I think you're really freakin funny though and it seems you've really hit the nail on the head. Really, I'm trying to be candid, not a smart ass, if it comes off that way.
you can get the album "The late great Daniel Johnston - Discovered Covered" on Amazon...I also fell head over feet for the song after THAT episode of ER!!!

This song is awesome, so moving I agree. If you are looking to download it, try Frostwire and typing in Discovered Covered into the album name. Thats how I found it.

It's the raw musical moments that make DJ what he was. production was secondary. It was about the art, the moment, the emotion, and the music.
Far too often....the TRUE musical talents and geniuses are overlooked and too often gone unnoticed but by a few.
