They used things called "sprites". 2d characters models that swap like pictures of a cartoon to mimic movement.

All these hacks are is when people edit the game dater with a different set of image names, and place there own images in the folders.

Utilities that do it for you only change file names. If it can be called hacking its more amateur then using utilities like cheat engine.

Model replacement refereed to swapping sprites.

Somewhere i saw a sonic 2 video with amy using the mallet from adventure, like she did in adventure. Thats more like hacking to me, actually adding a character and its own controls and values into the game.

using model replacement is simple stuff even without utilities. in Simple terms theres a line like "sprite [File name] action b = change sprite [file name]. people just change the [ ] things.

Yeah I have Eggman/Robot nik in Sonic 1. It's Awesome and you can literally not drown, get hurt by robots, or get affected by slides (Labrynith Zone) The only way to get killed is fall into a hole, get squashed or hit spikes. then you have to restart but it's a funny as hell game anyway. They should have mad the banner at the end be sonic, then it turns back to eggman/robotniks' face. Other than that it's great!
