As soon as my pilot became flight leader I would have him always equip the flight with some kind of air-to-ground ordnance. For long-range missions I would always equip with drop tanks and rockets.
Many times I fought through the whole war up to and including the 1946 expansion. I flew an Army pilot through from the Philippines in 1941 to Japan in 1946 - from P-40s to P-47s to P-80s. The Navy fighter pilot went from F4Fs to F6Fs and transitioned to the F8F in the 1946 expansion. The easiest was the F7F and F8F for air combat maneuvering - the absolute best for ground attack was the P-47, with the P-38J a close second for long-range attack with drop tanks and rockets.
You obviously did not know anything about the strong points and weak points of the various aircraft. You *don't* try to turn with a Zeke when flying a P-38!!! The P-38 excells in climb and speed.
Claire Chennault learned the same lessons over China in 1937 - 1941. The A6M2 was introduced over China in the summer of 1940. He made thorough reports back the the States. The reaction of the Army brass was incredulity...they did not believe that any fighter was capable of such things.
does someone know how to use torpedoes in this game i know the button and when it drops to water it looks like nothing happens like i failed and ships dont get damaged (sorry bad english)
I'd love to hear in what ways this game had more soul than IL-2 in your opinion, and why the campaign was better. Don't spare any details, I'd like to hear as much info as there is.
@brok2 This game contained the most universal campaign mode ever. You could start as far back as 1941 and you could fly for any branch in Japan or the US. Practically every major battle I can think of out of memory was used. Real locations, so many aircraft to choose from, all the ships, squadrons, ace pilots, real historical missions, and real payloads. Your bombs never spawned back so make em count! This game is what got me hooked on aircraft and history due to its immense detail!
@wuwindz I went through the game once in the Army Air Corp started out fly the P40E Warhawk, and then by 1943 shifted to the P-38J Lightning. I flew in the same squadron as McGuire and Bong and came out of the war with 126 kills. At least that's the one I remember the best....
@xxREDLEADER1xx Good stuff. Man I miss that game. They should remake it with a multiplayer aspect to it, and not mess with the graphics or sound fx too much.
I wish they would stop with all the 'arcade style' shoooter crap and make more authentic flight sims like this. They should rerelease Aces of the Pacific with modern graphics.
Man so many memories.. My Dad loved planes so he bought all the Dynamix flight sims. I remember they all had a really great campaign modes. They really don't make WWI and WWII flight sims like the Aces series
OMG, i spent hours on this game in my teens. Used to run it full graphics settings on my 386 DX66 (that didnt have the maths co-processor like the 486) with 8mb of ram and running @ 66mhz. I can say it ran amazing, i loved this game. I did find it for download for free a while back but it comes in a file that you need a floppy drive to copy it to. Its sort of a floppy version of an ISO...
@dan1986ist Dude is it free? I have the CD of the Aces Collectors Edition but I had to had it professionaly installed in 1995 and it has never worked again. I would LOVE to be able to play this game again.
graphics doesnt matter, i played this game as a kid and i have so many memories from this so almost get tears in my eyes when i see this and hear the lovely 16-bits music <3
Thanks for posting, i loved this game. I always would do the dive bombing missions, i would either pick an Dauntless or a Val: hitting the target and pulling up before crashing into the target was always a challenge!
Wow, this is a blast from the past! I poured a lot of time into this game. My favorites were the historical missions...especially the Torpedo 8 mission. Never could finish that one. :/
The Pearl Harbor attack is great mission too. Took my P40 north on a whim and found the Japanese "task force" (after 30 minutes of manual flying), which consisted of a single flattop. XD
This is my favorite combat flight sim of all time. I used to play this for hours when I was a kid on my parents 486. 25mhz cpu, 4mb of ram, and windows 3.1...Oh Yeah!!
I believe this was my first flight sim game I ever bought for the IBM and I agree with you in regards to the lack of soul by the newer games. I also love Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe. No game has yet to come close to their campaign. At least now gametap has this game.
Very professional vid. Wish more vid recorders of games remember to not flash thru screens and give time for viewers to read things - like this vid allows you to do! So well done Killerratte! Oh - and yea - a GREAT game that I still own (have the collector's edition with Red Baron, Aces Over Europe and A10- Killer!)
Oh yeah I forgot I had a CH Products Flight Stick Pro, and I had the hat switch set up for the left-right-up view, so in a turning dogfight I could look up and see the enemy where I couldn't see him with the normal nose view.
im sure that there is nothing that makes me feel more nostalgic that these musics.. this game was one of the first games i've ever played and gotta admit that i would still play it if i could get it work well enough on my comp :/
I was like 10-11 years old when my dad got me this game afer i nagged for weeks. I LOVED it! And i devoured the brilliant manual although i didnt speak english that well (im german), but i still got it today!
My primary motivation was the Babablack Sheep series on TV, and i almost always played the F4U-Career, while my dad started a jap Torpedo plane career. :)
AOE was great too, and today im in for IL2 till SOMETIME(when?!) BoB comes out.
Dude, I freakin LOVED this game back in the day! This brings back so many memories of me and my brothers taking turns playing this game. I'm tempted to try and fidn a version of this game that would work on my computer now.
i did know there were some many ppl who love this game as much as i do!!!..i am 30 now..by then this was my favourite always winning new medals and killing aces..lol..i used to like so much the 3d vehicle library (used to say OMG what a game)
Me too man, all through my early teens I played this damn game. Had to use a bootdisk to get it to work right haha Now I happily play IL2 1946, but it isnt the same as this old gem....
no shit, the stupid bootdisks! oh man, running games on dos way back when was always a fucking nightmare. but it was worth it! aces, wolf3d, 7th guest, oh my!
I loved this game on my 486 with 4mb ram. I liked flying the US F8f Bearcat and the Japanese Frank. They even had a Aces '46 scenario where the Abomb didn't work; the Japanese built a Kikka jet and the US had the P80 Shooting Star i recall
Love affair.
Thank you so much.
