back in 1984 we regularly flew in an Aero Commander(Twin Commander) but also on pipers and cessnas and beechcrafts. this is the best propeller driven plane i've ever been on. better than a bonanza.
The undercarraige is held in the up position by sheer hydraulic pressure and the G's I pulled caused that wheel to "push back" sufficiently to protrude from the wheel well. If hydraulic pressure is lost, the wheels fall into the down and locked position automatically once the speed gets below about 100 knots.
I needed that once when I lost hydraulics in flight and made a safe landing at our home port.
I well remember my fist flight in a 500B from Virginia Airport in Duran in 1969. A mate of mines Father ( now deceased - I think owned ZS-CBC and we had to fly down to Queenstown for a presentation award dinnner. My mate Garth and I wandered around town that night staying at the Hexagon Hotel. nect morning the plane was refueled and we headed up to Drakensber Gardens hotel to where they had a holiday home for lunch. Have lots of fantastic photos of that fantastic day. Went on to fly them later .
There is a 680 based in Southern Australia that sounds much like this - very loud definitely also has the Augmentor tricks...but runs 3-bladed props. Pretty sure the engines are IGSO-480-A1B6 or even 540's similar to the Queenair.
Interesting...is that an early 500? Two blade props say it isn't a 560 or 680, however it has individual exhaust stacks into those augmenter tubes by sound I believe. Great sound!

Not many folks notice that.

@nicoacuorg
interesting - i caught a glimpse of it and wondered why. Is the plane still flying?
juzzi07 1 year ago
@juzzi07 I haven't seen it since 1993, but it still shows up on the registry as active, so I assume it's still going strong.
