@bogoas81 That is not true. Throughout our history we have had an influx of immigrants who have settled here, and we have benefitted massively from it. Be it the Huguenots and Palatines in the late 17thC or Romanies and Flemish Weavers throughout the Middle Ages. Before Medieval England the country was divided between Saxons, Angles and Norse Vikings. Africans have been here since the mid-16thC, Indians and Chinese since 1700s. Dunno where your "figures" come from

@secretspurs Being pro-immigration is fine. I myself believe immigration is on the whole beneficial to Britain. But it's disingenuous to pretend that the multi-ethnic multi-faith multi-lingual society we are building is not a deviation from our past. There was not a substantial African population in Britain in the 1600s and a few individuals do not impact on demographics. It's the like saying there's no such thing as the Chinese race because the Italian Marco Polo visited in the 14th century!

So what constitutes this English ethnicity? That you eat Fish and Chips? The 1st Fish and Chip shop was only opened in the 1860, by a Jew. Half of what we consider English actually has its roots in other cultures. You could turn to religion, and the Church of England, introduced by our greatest king, King Henry VIII. He was Welsh. Just like India, Jamaica was considered part of the UK for some 200 odd years and was only given independence in 1962. Many Jamaicans who came to England did so in the 1950's, meaning that they have never actually lived outside the UK. Beyond that, they can trace their Jamaican heritage back many, many generations. There are plenty White "English" who can only follow their family line back a couple generations before it starts to wander abroad, actually outside of the UK.

Multi-culturalism is nothing new. People of African heritage have been discovered living in York in the Roman era. India WAS part of Britain for some 200 years, curries are still considered 1 of our national dishes. It is what makes England great. Be proud of our ability to integrate, it is what makes us all English

@secretspurs Actually multiculturalism is relatively new to Britain. As recently as 1950 about 98% of British people were Caucasian, and not just Caucasian but Northern European Caucasian. And about 98% of British people were Christian or nominally Christian. And almost all English spoke English as their first language. Britain was not then a country with millions of Asians and Africans and there were not millions of Muslims or a million Hindus etc. This is a recent change to Britain.

English is NOT an ethnicity. What constitutes being English? We are a patchwork nation whose very culture is woven from the traditions of many others. To be English literally means that you are able to integrate, adapt and absorb. This country has historically been constructed of many cultures . . .
