  • If this is a wood stain how does it work with metal? Can other products work if Zar is not available? what is the base component of Zar so as to find a similar product if Zar is not available in my area. Thanks you for your kind reply.

  • @edsbz76 ZAR has a special formulation, it is a mix between a gel and liquid stain so it does not clog the graining tool like gel stain, but it does not run like a liquid stain. Visit the ZAR website for a dealer near you.

  • can you do this with plastic?btw not a plastic door

  • I really just watched that..

  • Hola, soy de argentina. Cual es el nombre de este producto? lo venden en la argentina? desde ya muchas gracias. ministerioduncan@yahoo.com

  • @gedeonduncan ZAR Wood Stain and ZAR Graining Tool are the names of the product. Yes, it is sold in Argentina.

  • exact name, a device that makes these patterns of wood?

  • @tomek198529 ZAR Graining Tool

  • where can i buy this tool in Europe, Romania ??? please mail me ardelean_gabi@yahoo.com

  • Yes, you can grain metal with ZAR Wood Stain. Follow the same directions, just make sure you wipe the piece first with mineral spirits.

  • @unitedgilsonitelabs Half of my kitchen cabinets are metal and the other half are faced with cheap plywood. Replacing the cabinets right now is not an option. If I use a woodgraining tool on my metal cabintes can I also use it on the plywood to get the same look throughout?

  • Can I do this to anything that's metal? I have these metal/steel table legs that I want to make it look wood. Can I use the method shown in the video?

  • Thanx I'm going to try it!

  • Neat!!

  • How about simply using a wooden door? Wouldn't that be easier?

  • @FesterBable Yes, but sometimes wooden doors are not in people's budgets or they have a wood door they would like to reuse, instead of buying new. Often times it is code that you have to use a steel door between the garage and living space.

  • I want to do my triming and baseboards with a wood look. They are covered with years on white paint. Can someone help me with ideas for doing this. or can I just follow the shown video and just do the same thing for my project???

  • @JeanieBristerDesign You don't need to strip the paint because you are starting with a light color. Follow the graining instructions on this video or on the tool package and you will get the same look as wood.

  • You can turn the tool around for a different effect, you just need to play around until you get the look you are looking for. The more stain you apply, the darker the panels will become.

  • Is there a brush that makes it look like Mahogany? And how do I darken inside edges of panel? Thanks.

  • The video is good although he forgot to mention that when ever you are doing faux or just painting over a door in this case, you should always lightly sand the surface, it helps the paint to stick or in this case the stain, just use fine sand paper or even better a sanding sponge, just make sure is fine grade, the other thing i always do is clear coat the first coat, than you don't have to worry about rubbing the stain off.

  • I actually have a small vanity that I believe is fiberglass, I want to try this on it.

  • Yes, please wait another 24 hours. When you applying the ZAR Wood Stain to metal, it is very sensitive to temperature and humidity because all fo the stain is staying on the surface and not soaking into the wood. So, although it is tempting, wait until the stain is no longer sticky before top coating.

  • It has been more than 24 hours. But the first coat on the metal is still sticky. If I touch with my finger, the wood stain sticks on it. Should I wait until completely dry before applying the polyurethane?

  • Dont you need to seal the first coat of stain be for applying a second coat!!!

  • @vancity01 No, once you grain the door, allow to dry 24hours - next apply the tone coat, let that dry for 24 hours, than you can apply the seal coat.

  • Recommendations on the exterior is 2 to 3 coats, more would give you added protection. After you have done all that work to make your door look great, follow the directions on the poly label so you can protect that finish as best as possible. More coats offer more protection.

  • Can I apply just one coat of polyurethane on the door (exterior and interior)?

  • Will do this work on plastic? I'm planing on redesign a nerf longshot shot to make it a Steampunk sniper rifle. If anyone read this comment, can you please tell me. Als if you're a steampunk fan, can you give me any tips on how to give the nerf longshot a steampunk feel. I want to make it look a WWII rifle

  • Prime it with a light color primer paint and grain over, once the paint is dry.

  • what to do if door is already painted dark brown color?

  • @psychobunny32 paint it a lighter brown first

  • Great video!!...Do I have to put a base coat of mustard color before applying the stain and creating the wood grains?

  • Yes, ZAR Wood Stain is perfect for hardwood floors.

  • can i use this to paint the floor?

  • Yes, you would need to start with a white or light color paint so you could see the graining.

  • Perhaps I could get this same effect on the stock of my Ar-15 and possibly on the barrel cover(Vietnam style rounded triangle) they're plastic composite but black. Should I have someone apply a lighter paint color before attempting this effect?

  • Yes, it would work on any metal.

  • Hello. Thanks for the great video! I was wondering would this work on metal that isn't flat, like a bicycle frame? Please let me know. Thanks for your time!

  • This guy's a little TOO trustworthy. I don't trust him. Jokes - thanks for the vid! :)

  • Yes, you have to wait for the stain to dry, if you do not you will be rewetting the grain pattern and it would not work.

  • after you put the thin coat of paint

do you have to wait until its dry before putting the heavier coat???

  • I want to do this on my steel door..only problem is...no way to lock up the house..while doing the project...any advice. :)

  • Will this work on aluminum? I want to try to make an aluminum baseball bat look as if it is wooden.

  • Yes, you can wood grain almost any surfaces if there is not some type of oil applied to the bat. If there is a protective oil applied to the bat, you would have to remove this first or the stain would have trouble staying on the surface.

  • why did you put water in the waste can?

  • Any oil base product has the potential of spontaneously combusting. You want to make sure to dispose of your rags in air tight containers or in water to prevent fires.

  • @unitedgilsonitelabs ahhhhh good idea, thanks for the reply

  • @attainableapex all that chemical on the rags and brushes can cause FIRE!!!. thats why he put it in water hope this answer your question. :)

  • Who is that guy he looks familiar lol

  • It is Pat Simpson he was a host on HGTV and many other home improvement shows.

  • I have a dark brown steel door. Do I need to paint it white before I add the Zar stain?

    Love the video !

  • Yes, if the door is dark you need paint with a lighter color so the grain will show.

  • wow its incredible how much it looks like wood

  • Question is ZAR Wood Stain actually a stain or a paint simulating stain for other surfaces like in this prodject ?

thx in advance 4 your time

  • @wackerthecracker ZAR is a penetrating wood stain. It's unique full bodied formula makes it versatile to use on other surfaces.

  • Great instructional video! I definitely want to try this on my garage doors. What are the stain colors of the (4th, 5th and 6th) doors starting at 29 seconds? Thank you

  • These are all Teak Natural, however depending on the substrate, they will take the color different. Metal will be darker because it goes on like paint. The stain on the fiberglass will soak right in, so you will need more stain for a deeper color.

  • Good God that's easy.

  • i dont know if u are with the company, but i have a link to your product on my website i do alot of faux wood finishing locally here in south florida, and i tell everyone they have to buy the zar and put it on once or 2x a yr, it really works, and its soooo easy to use, thanks for making such an awesome product!

  • Yes I am, I would love to see some photos. Thanks for the kind words,

  • ZAR CLEAR EXTERIOR WATER BASED IS THE BEST PRODUCT IVE EVER USED OR SEEN FOR METAL OR ANY EXTERIOR SURFACE FOR PROTECTION FROM THE SUN, IT IS FLEXIBLE MORE SO THAN OIL BASED SO IT HOLDS UP AND DOESNT CRACK OVER YEARS OF SUN EXPOSURE ON HOT SURFACES SUCH AS METAL, GREAT PRODUCT AND ITS THE ONLY ONE I RECCOMMEND TO ALL MY CLIENTS.

  • Thanks, it is the product that is the most recommended and included in door manufacturing finishing kits such as Masonite.

  • Thanks, it is the product that is the most recommended and included in door manufacturing finishing kits such as Masonite.

  • that's pretty cool. Is the finish durable?

  • The finish is as durable as the top coat you apply. The ZAR Polyurethane is the same polyuethane you would put on hardwood floors or a dining table. Therefore, it would hold up to most ware.

  • I have white cabinets in my kitchen that are made of fiberboard. Could I use this product on a material such as fiberboard? The cabinet company I purchased it from recommended that I do NOT sand the cabinets if I decide to paint it, as it will destroy the fiberboard.

  • I just bought a tudor style home and I think a dark wood grain would look nice on the white garage door and front door but I'm a little nervous to try this. Do you recommend practicing first on some scrap wood or metal?

  • Yes trying this on a small scrap first would work. Although you can see from the video that you can remove the grain if you are not happy if you do so before it dries. On a large door like a garage, you want to work in sections like they are individual boards.

  • Can use this same technique on white painted cabinets if I paint them an appropriate base color first?

  • Yes, this would work on cabinets. White can be used as the base coat also. You just need to dull the finish and go to work.

  • wood this technique work on a car as well i have a 84 grand wagoneer

  • Yes, we have customers use this technique on the inside and outside of cars. One customer actually made a stationwagon look like a Woodie.

  • is there different patterns im looking for like that tiger striped look for a guitar im making.

  • You can get very creative with rags, brushes, sponges and the graining tool, making all kinds of patterns.

  • is that possible to paint a black metal with this way or should i paint it white first than do the paint to wood color?

  • No, you really would not see the wood grain on a black door. It would be best to paint the door a tan or cream or even white color prior to graining.

  • Where can I purchase the wood grain tool and ZAR products in NC? Can I get them online from your website?

  • if you go to our web site at ugl.com, you can go to the product you are looking for and enter you zip code and list of dealers in your area will appear.

  • We want to grain the basement steps to match the blond or natural oak floors in the rest of the house.

These steps now have a grey deck paint on them.

Aside from cleaning with mineral spirits, what other pprep would you suggest??

  • Since you are looking to achieve a light natural oak color, you want to paint the steps light tan (egg shell or semigloss) to start off with a neutral palette prior to wood graining. Remember, don't forget to coat with a polyurethane to protect the finish when you are done.

  • why not work for another day and buy a wooden door? ... instead of waisting a day painting

  • Wood doors are wonderful and yes, ZAR can be used on Wood Doors as well. However, some states require metal doors between the garage and the house for fire reasons. Metal is not always very attractive therefore wood graining really comes in handy.

  • hi my door is already painted black, would i be able to use it over that or will i have to take the color off first? Thanks

  • It is advised that you paint the door with a light primer paint. The black paint would not show the grain because the stain is transparent. A buff or tan primer would be preferred.

  • @unitedgilsonitelabs...Can you do this over existing wood? My wife and I wanted to give our bathrooms a newer look, but I wanted to do something different besides replacing them. Can you do this over wood that looks dull?

  • Yes, you can grain over existing wood. You can either paint the wood a light color first, or you can grain over with a darker color, either method would work.

  • The only problem with this is that you are pretty much limited to an Oak type grain.

  • Actually, the head of teh graining tool is detachable. There is a combed edge which simulates the vein grain common with pine and heart pine. In addition the knoched edge simulates quarter sawn wood. You can simple play around until you get the look you are looking for.

  • Help please? Painted our new steel door using this video & products. Love the wood grain look but once the door was hung, the inside stain color is too dark. What can we do now to lighten the door?

  • You can paint over with a base coat of light base and grain again or strip the door and start over.

  • You can paint the door with a light base coat and grain again, or you can strip the door and start again.

  • Our indoor porch had been painted grey and we were going to repaint it white so we primed it with paint primer. But after watching this video we kinda wanna try this. Would it work on our floor? We wanna keep it white but with the wood grain look. Would we just use the Zar graining tool and white paint then let it dry or do we need to add the wood stain? Sorry so many questions, we've never done anything like this before.

  • Yes, this would work with white paint. Just be sure to work in small sections, before the paint dries. When the floor is completely dry, add a protective coat of a waterbased Polyurethane. Waterbased because oil-based has a tendency to amber; a waterbased polyurethane usually stays clear for light color stains or paints. There are country white wood stains also, you can also try that instead of paint on your floor and it is thinner and would show the natural grain through the stain.

  • Thanks!

  • Is that OIL base wood stain?

  • Yes, in this video it is oil based stain, but our ZAR Ultra Max waterborne oil modified stain can also be used.

  • would this work on concrete also?

  • Yes, this will work on metal, concrete, plastic, wood, etc. Just remember, you would want to put some type of protective coating over the stain. This is especially important when you put on a dense surface and the stain is not allowed to penetrate.

  • I'm going to do this, thanks!

  • Yes, just remember to clean the surface to get all the grease and dirt from the surface.
