I have found your hints very helpful. Instead of underpainting only in black/white I now add in some burnt sienna (since I already have it on my palette) to neutralise the temperature of the grisaille. I have also realised that I need to keep all the tones a mite higher in value, since glazing will naturally darken the underlayers to some extent. Thanks for posting the cool videos :-) (ps. I was soufflekingsize (new channel)).
thanks for the comments. i will shortly be publishing the new site dealing with painting and drawing methods . There will be a forum for perfecting methods,Videos Etc. i will be in touch as soon as we launch
I've been working obsessively for many long years to peel away the mysteries of past painting disciplines. I am at the moment trying to develop the idea of a closed grisaille in ivory-black/white, but I can't work out whether to use black at full strength, or to keep all the tones slightly higher in value before glazing and scumbling? Love to see you work, sir.
thanks for the coments .i am just in the process of setting up a new site ,it will have a forum for all questions about classical painting and other methods.
With the griaille i work with burnt umbar, ivory black and flake white.the initial underdrawing is painted first in white then the other tones are added . the scumbles and glazes become more transparent in the later layers of the grizzae.
keep in touch . i will let you know when the new site is launched
the painting in the film is at the underpainting stage. the other videos on ronnieryan1 show more of the process. i teach old master classes at my studio and this september i will be launching new online courses.
