Heartfelt, heart pulling, heartbreaking. I was 18 and in love, not sure of where I was going and what I wanted to do or be with. Life is one big circle. Thanks for the memories Jim.
One of the most moving television experiences I have had to date was Wolfman Jack's tribute edition to Jim Croce on *The Midnight Special*. I would dearly love to have a copy of that.
I was in grade 11 when I first heard this tune and it completely summed up the relationship I was just leaving. It was incredible to hear someone so clearly delineate what I was struggling to come to terms with on my own.
This guy died way too young! I was only four years old when he died.
Great music he gave us in such a short time. Too bad I don't really hear him on the radio anymore. It's OK, I have him on my ipod and Pandora.com. I watched
Behind the Music on VH1 about him. It was sad, his wife looked like she was going to cry when reliving what happened. The way she explained it, she had a feeling about the phone call she got that night. Glad to see his son is carrying the torch.
I'm eighteen years old and have been listening to Jim since I was old enough to hear. Dad loves him and so do I. It's obvious that his brilliant music transcends generations. It doesn't matter what age you are, you can also appreciate beautiful music...that's what this is.
damn, have heard it a million times or did I? "..when the people and memories, join at the seams..." great, great line. Sang along a million times, and tonight, it stands out.
tears you apart ánd makes you love, lets you down ánd gives you hights, lets you cry ánd reaches your deepest feelings, is sad ánd it is happiness... it's simply wonderful!
I grew up with the music of Jim Croce, and in all those years I refound, and refound, and refound him! GREAT MUSIC!
Damn it , I should never listen to your music even though I like it, but it refects my life way way to much, I am sure there are lot other people out there that feels the same as I do.
One of the most beautiful songs EVER recorded! I may not be old enough to be from his era (32) But I will ALWAYS remember growing up turning the pages in my dad's Jim Croce music books, while he played the guitar and sang for me and our family. Memories I will always cherish. Thank You Pops for being the kind of father that knew how important it is to pass along the great artists for the following generations to enjoy! And Thank You so much Jim for the years of music! R.I.P. Jim..........
Growing up in PI, this man thought me how to appreciate music. One day i was walking in downtown San Diego with my wife and we went to a restaurant (croces) that didnt know it was own by his wife or family i was just so happy that they are playing his album and didnt realized until i was reading the menu and it was one the happiest day of my life.
Just something undefinable about him............He was the perfect singer. He could take a song and just make it absolutely perfect.
His music is as current and relevant as ever.......just simple songs about life, love and pain. I hope somewhere there is a special place souls like his go.
Jim was a master at the difficult art of writing memorable melody lines.. a distinctive voice and a knack for lyrics made him a triple threat and a shoo-in for fame.
His death was a big loss for lovers of the well written ballad.
Beauty. What a team.... Maurie's guitar work and Jim's QUICKLY advancing song-writing were unlimited. I think after Jim's work with Maurie the bar was raised for everyone... at least for a while.
@boopboy1 hey man I know what u mean... I was not born when he died but music is everything to me n this guy is one of my all time favs.... This world world b much better he were still here
When I look at Jim and Maurie playing this beautiful music, I get this empty feeling thinking about how they're not with us anymore..What would they have spoiled us with had they lived.
I was only 7 years old when they died, and I remember my 16 year old brother crying...I'll never forget that.
There is a warmth and directness with Jim Croce that literally transcends time and space. His phrasing and tone was one of a kind. It's hard to listen to he and Maury without wondering what if....
Who doesn't own a Jim Croce album, tape, or CD? His work is eternal; it will prove to be as timeless as works produced by Beethoven, Mozart, or Bach. An ordinary man singing to ordinary people about extraordinary circumstances. Striking a balance between the dreams in people's lives and the very backdrop of reality they must face in everyday situations.
FAVORITE ARTIST OF ALL TIME .. RIP JIM YOU LIVE IN OUR HEARTS FOREVER MORE. NO MATTER THE AGE YOU HAVE TAKEN MANY GENERATIONS AND TURNED THEM INTO LIFELONG FANS <3 WE LOVE YOU!
@julietpauletteh I agree. I was a Jim Croce fan when I was a teenager and still am to this day. His lyrics were powerful and everyone can relate in one way or another.
He died on my 14th birthday. He was my favorite then and still is now. I have his greatest hits CD and whenever things get bad I sit and listen to it over and over. My favorite musician ever!!!
i was raised on music like jim's. there has never been a more meaningful decade in music than the than the stuff generated between 1965 and 1975. from olivia and elton to croce and denver..... these are songs that resonate through the years like no others can. thanks for the memories jim, and all your contemporaries too.

i was not even born when he died its sad to think of all the songs we all wont get to hear why is it all ways the ones that touch your soul that die young
Jim was not about to quit music after the fall of 1973...he was going to take a break after 3 straight years of making albums and touring. His final concert in Natchitoches, LA was a make up concert because he was ill the year before. Even though he was a big star by this time he kept his commitment and performed for $750.00. Right after that show, sadly he was killed in the plane crash. Jim was one of the most talented singer/songwriters that ever lived, I believe.
@MrBeatlefan57 also a side note about the night he died : he had originally planned to leave the following day but at the last minute decided to fly out that night in time to catch a late set by his friend the late steve goodman in austin texas ...true story.
@MrBeatlefan57 I must agree. His music had a profound impact on my playing. I've tried to do him justice with my covers on here, but it's a high bar to reach for.
Truly one of a kind. He was an inspiration to many, myself included. His music was the reason was I endeavored to learn to play the guitar. I still do until now and i owe it to this great musician. Rest in peace Jim!
I miss this guys talent, need more musicians like him. Too bad he was quitting music the day he died. Not many people know that but it was his last concert and he was going back home to be a dad.
@mcsnaperville '...no, no, no, no. That's not the way it was'. Sherman TX was to be the last stop. This stop was a make-up engagement from over a year & a half before when no one knew them. Yes he was taking probably a rest but make no mistake, Jim and Maury were going places not even they could imagine. We were so cheated & robbed of their blazing talent and was to come.
With all respect to the master Jim Croce, my girlfriend just said that he looks like Mr Potato head from toy story and I can't get that image out of my mind.
iw32, you should not put yourself down. You’re alive & can still make your mark if you want. You wouldn’t want to exit the way they did—so violently, & much too young. They practised like mad to develop their talents & paid big-time dues. When Jim & Maury started performing together, they had to do gigs in dives for small $. They were broke. Once they stayed at a cheap hotel & got poisoned by the lousy food there. They probably had to cancel their show & lose what little money they were getting.
Jim Croce, Harry Chapin, & Paul Williams = The 3 best singer/songwriters in America. (I'd say the planet, but then I'd just sound like another ego-centric American)
My father introduced me to Mr. Croce. it's 2011 and i'm 30 and this is still better than anthing written in the last 40 years. (and i used to consider myself a metalhead and still do a bit).
@NowellRox I been an Iron Maiden fan for over 30 years man. You dont have to listen to just one type of music. I listen to everything except hard rap. Keep rocking man, but keep the lighter side there.
Jim also never really reaped the reward for his music, he only really got airtime and more famous after his untimely passing, and why are there 16 dislikes!!! WTF!!
@ferminreyesjr Always thought the same jim especially.. he was the first great cross over artist... he saved my life as a youngster... If he was alive music would have been different...
Oh my God! Jime Croce was so very talented. Imagine if he was still with us today? Imagine the beautiful music he would sing? We can only dream. :-( Thanks for such a beautiful post.
How long has it been--and I still miss Jim and Maurie. Jim had the voice and writing talent, but it wouldn't have been the same without Maurie's guitar style. At least we have his music--and Ingrid and A.J. to keep him on our minds and in our hearts.
I've always loved this song and all his others. What a shame he died so young, he had such a wonderful voice and style, He still lives on in our memories and in the soundtrack of our lives and those early fun '70's! Thanks, Jim for leaving a legacy of such good music for us!
This song is one of Jim's best melodically, poetically, and all around musically. Somehow he's able to repeat his majestic talents in every song he creates. Truly one of the finest.
I remember Jim's passing that first week of High School back in '73. I learned of his death at the bus stop on B'way and 225th in the Bronx. It is one of those moments that has been etched into my memory. I was stunned that day. His music was so poignant. Two of the best balladeers of our generation passed away too young......Harry Chapin and Jim Croce. As one poster on this page said, Jim was real talent. His music moves us in ways not too many can.
I really love his voice. No one else has ever sounded like that. I still miss him to this day, but as someone else said, his music will be in my heart forever.
You`re all so right. I can only wonder what gems he would`ve continued to come up with if only he`d lived longer. A tragic loss, and one of the all time greats. We cant afford to lose talent like that in an X Factor/Pop Idol age. One of my biggest influences. Bri
I like how you left that little bit of him talking at the end.

'Cause tables are meant for turning
And people are meant for change
And bridges are meant for burning
When the people and memories they join aren't the same.
How insightful is that?

Jim Croce, Harry Chapin, & Paul Williams = The 3 best singer/songwriters in America. (I'd say the planet, but then I'd just sound like another ego-centric American)

Another lovely ballad by the brilliant Jim Croce.Gone too soon!

Velvet voice, magic fingers and a really, truly sweet guy! Thirty five years later and I still miss him.

Jim also never really reaped the reward for his music, he only really got airtime and more famous after his untimely passing, and why are there 16 dislikes!!! WTF!!

You`re all so right. I can only wonder what gems he would`ve continued to come up with if only he`d lived longer. A tragic loss, and one of the all time greats. We cant afford to lose talent like that in an X Factor/Pop Idol age. One of my biggest influences. Bri
