I grew up in South Central Los Angeles in a foster home with abusive foster parents. My foster mother would stand over the stove cooking gumbo with a lit cigarette hanging out of her mouth. She wore sloppy old dresses with thick torn stockings. When I first heard this song the story I thought it was a perfect description of my foster mother; so one day when she was cooking I told her I wanted to sing a song for her and I sang this one.
