Also Nancy, the nails we know and love today didn't come about until 1910, so either the place is older than that and like you said someone made repairs to it so they could continue to use it, or it was built after 1910. Either way that place is definitely old.
they probably had a portable stove for heat they then took with them when they moved on. I don't know. I'm stumped with how they had heat also. ????

I think back then it would have probably been filled with mud and dried grasses for chinking...long gone by now.
