  • this shape is in G , is in the same shape for other keys ? so just starting on the different root? and why doesnt the scale go further up the neck ?

  • u look like pyro in fantastic four

  • music is so hard to understand....

  • Im intermediate but crap at keys and scales so these are really helpful :)

  • nice its very helpful :)

  • just sayin

  • @LeonPowolski

Last note of a scale is always the same note the scale starts from (though it's an octave high). Which is pretty obvious.

  • @codyahernek nice :) \m/

  • Lol I like ur accent ^^

  • woww

    it sound sweet!!

  • How do you download the backing track???

  • i'm kind of lost when you start talking about core tones, what do you mean by that term?

  • @thomasjeeh

    Chord tone, not core tone.

Notes of which a chord consists.

For example if u're playing the G major scale, chord tones would be every G, B, D (Root, 3rd, 5th.)

  • put on some shoes!!!

  • @jeremymalcolm73 If you or Justin had to DIAF I would choose you without hesitation, and I don't even know you! See, isn't the internet cool ;)

  • see what happened to the good old music like this with sweet sounds, now adays its like half the music that comes out is just guys trying to show off how fast they can play and its not really that moving

  • 2:12 facebook chat message haha

  • this is a DVD :0!

  • VERRRRYYY GOOOOOOD perfect teaching well done

  • this is awesome

  • Great videos. Along time ago, my uncle told me I can play any song if I learned the scales. I didn't believe him, but now I do lol!

  • wow.. nice track... where can i download your backing track

  • @anestis12345671 about as stupid as your spelling.

  • All of ur vids help me so much. Awesome. 'course I already knew this tho.

  • i dont get the chord turns.

  • the notes that make up the G major chord are G B and D.

    These are the chord TONES.

the will sound 'correct' over a G major chord

    :-)

  • awesome!

  • hey guys, can i combine the scale G and E?

  • G and Em, as long as Em is the relative minor of G major... this is the same scale but the important note in G are not the same than in Em

  • oh i see. thanks :]

  • thanks to you coz your teknic are very helpful.

    malaysian people...

  • @TheAlong79 teknic?

  • im close to purchasing this DVD...still saving up money.

  • lk ur accent. its adorable :)

  • Looks a lot like BRENDON SMALL!

  • What Mayor scale have to use if i want to improv in a backing track with 4 acords(C-D-G-Em)???

  • G major Scale and C major scale would work, but also be mindful of the chord tones

  • the c scale (starts @ the 8 fret (e string)

  • or at the third fret of the A string..

  • *major

  • it would have to be G major, unless your really good.

in the C major scale, D is a minor chord (it's the minor second)

so you could only play in the C major scale on C, G and Em.

it's not impossible, many people do it and can do it well (e.g SRV and Hendrix "Little wing") but for those chords it would probably sound weird switching for one chord so it would be best to stick to G major (or E minor)

  • In fact , that is G Major , coz C and D are the 4th and 5th grade of G Major scale , en Em and G Major 've got the same notes on the scale.

  • for example if you start with the Cmajor chord try the Cmajor scale.. if you start with the Fmajor chord try the Fmajor scale..

  • the last part was awsome it sounded great!

  • and why cant he have a boyfriend?

    just fyi m strait.

  • i bet he definitely has got a girlfriend

  • great stuff man! its lots of fun! :D

  • Are all major chords made up of notes from their respective major scale? For example, is Cmaj made up of the 1st, 3rd, and 5th notes of the major scale? And are minor chords made up of notes from the minor scale?

  • Yes, and all major scales are built around the tones thats in a chord. Like the Gmaj scale is playing the notes in a Gmaj chord. You also use the same scale-pattern in all major scales I think. And remember that the notes/tones can repeat in the scale, just in another frequency.

  • I just can't find this easy to follow. Maybe it's cause I have way to many things on my mind right now.

  • thanks.. great video.. great explaning.. i like how u just simply called them.. 1 2 3 4 fingers.. was easy to follow..

  • Great job Justin. It is so kind that you have recorded so many videos and patiently shown us novice how to play guitar.

  • what is a guitar scale? :-/

  • what is that a tattoo of on his left arm?

  • no really... who cares?

  • see the q&a vids see talks about that

  • can someone help me? in that video was he just using the first two positions of the major scale to solo?

  • yes

  • 3:48 is the chord shape i was looking for a long time

  • after you get to the 2nd position whats the 3rd position in g major scale?

  • man, I'm eager for the day that I'm able to play like you.

  • Ahha at 0:58 there is a fly in the air

  • Its a mosquito! lol

  • Its a flyquito :P

  • Oh!Difficult,but interesting,

  • Ehh, does anyone know a site or advice on playing the major scale on different scales, eg: Major scale rooted on the g string etc, without the pitch changing, I had it for one of my guitar tests & it's bugging me.

I understand intervals etc, but it's just that really, I want to expand my theory then I can concentrate on my playing side more & be a better musician, so if anyone can help?

    Thanks.

  • Hang on here, he calls the upper string "sixth string" is that correct? I thought the most bottom one was the sixth.

  • nope, the thickest string, the one closest to your face when you play, is the sixth string. don't ask why these rules were made up this way, because i don't have a clue, and the guy who came up with it is probably long dead.

  • w00t comment 101

    i wana buy this

    looks good

    rock on/acoustic on justin

  • Can you tell us which fret to hit first, and then play it, instead of playing it first. because then i get lost

  • loved the bit you played at the end!

  • Considering the DVD is called 'Master The Major Scale', I'm pretty sure he's only going to be covering the major scale.

  • This is the Major scale. Is there a Minor scale? How many scales are there?

  • thers a hell of alot and i suck at all of em

  • lmao! Me too!

  • yep , i third that !

  • the guitar is an amazing object ..although difficult to master and you might just pull out your head and kill yourself..you still make music once you doit!

  • is that a shovel on ur left arm justin?

  • broken arrow

  • eh justin loko kba?

  • great!

  • man tanks for all those lessons :D would be great if u could do one for stairway to heaven from led zep :)

  • very good lesson Justin

  • this was the first thing my guitar teacher teached me.

    ^^

  • Your videos on here helped me a tone for sure, so I'm not judging your style of teaching. (because it helped me) But friend of mine who's a guitar/music theory teacher showed me little things like the actual pattern the major scale is in, and the octaves and how on every octave, you can repeat the last G scale progression for the exception of the G to B string transition. That alone has done a TON to help my improv, and helped me understand scaling and guitar as a whole.

  • don't worry about being a smart ass...

first of all: natural notes is actually quite complicated. Check out the tempered system on wiki, for further info. Natural tones are common in folk music but not on instruments that are fretted or has keys.

Secondly: The F# is the 7th step which would be a B in a C major scale. The C major sc ale has no sharps or flattened tones.

  • The pattern goes tone tone semitone tone tone tone semitone, so therefore goes g a b c d and since e and f are a semitone apart goes to f#

  • Because the G major scale has an F# in it. if the F was natural it would be a different scale and would be G mixolydian

  • nice house dude. lol

  • AND he's a Mac user. I'm in love.

  • hes great..but im not in love

  • huuueellooww its justin here :P

  • I love you sooo much, thank youu, thank you, thank youuuu...

  • Ok just wondering if someone could help me out. So is that scale pattern the same for every key? like say for example if i wanted to play it in the key of A, I would start on the 6th string of the 5th fret with that same pattern? Am i right?

  • That's Right!

  • justin is the man

  • Justin.. that demo is so incredibly motivational.... very nice man... very nice.

  • please justin add me as ur frend i need help on a song and i cant send u a message

  • your the best teacher

  • thank you

    you are free teacher

  • It would be better if people like you didnt use Youtube. That wasnt meant as an insult and obviously you are a little insecure about your guitar playing... he is phenomenal. And a hell of a teacher, it just stuns me how ignorant you are. Why dont you go ahead and respond by calling me a fucking queer or faggot again. Seems like it must have made you feel better about yourself. I'm going to go back to watching his vids and enjoying some real talent. Peace

  • yeah im right there with you. A lot of people just like to sit back and criticize because of jealousy, I on the other hand am a pretty decent guitar player but a much better pianist, so I just really enjoy watching someone of this calibur. Thanks for the coment back
