CLOSED RIDES: Space Invader 2, at Blackpool Pleasure Beach

I worked on this ride for three years, as the car was climbing the conveyor at the begining he managed to climb out of his harness and clambered onto the back of the car, at the top of the conveyor, at the first drop, was an overhanging piece of scenery and it was a high drop onto concrete with various metal bars in between. They changed the harnesses after that, the things used to bash the holy shit out of your ears.

Some poor kid did die on this ride due to track surfing, I worked there at the time, the kid was stupid but he did not deserve what happened to him. everybody was shocked especially the father of three who found him.

We had a couple of these type rides in the 80's. The Flight to mars and the Flight to venus The Flight to Venus was mostly a glorified 3 level ghost train with bad Giger Alien knock offs but Flight to mars was a more elaborate in close mini version of Space Mountain. Not as good as Dinsy of course but pretty good for a smaller amusement area. All gone now. A few in storage.

It was closed in 2008 after a failed Evacuation During Opening Hours and that the track needed a lot of Re-Welding and Replacing and it would cost Too Much.

Shame it has closed down, but it was a crap ride really (good when it first came out), only felt good cos it was in the dark. Saying that i first rode it 23 years ago, was good, then but i was only 11.

@EzziBabexx Christopher was in my daughters class at school. It was the last day of school in year 6 before the summer holidays when the tragedy happened. No-one knows for sure but it's thought he was just messing about and decided to undo his belt and stand up.. He was just a little boy having fun and it was a terrible thing to happen. I'm not sure but I think the ride was reopened some time afterwards.

@iPodzMedia Did you even read what I wrote? I said no-one knows for sure. You were in the line at the time? so you would have been five years old.... Evidence points to him messing about. He was truanting from school.. (that I do know because it was a school day and he wasn't there) some people who worked on the rides said he and his friends were well known to rides staff for messing around and all apparently had stolen wristbands on at the time. It was a horrible thing to happen.

The reason they're moving Space Invaders 2 is because they're changing Beaver Creek- it is to be called "nickolodean land" and is to be opened in April 2011. The Rollercoaster has also been closed, because they are fully extending what was, beaver creek...

Went on it only once 3 years ago.

It was nothing special but it was as smooth as glass and there is nothing quite like a coaster in the dark.

@sami157 It closed becuase, as it was an enclosed ride, it had too be evacuated quickly. A drill during operation failed, and so it was deemed unsafe. I completely agree with that he was mucking about.

Before the boy dies it had no bars and after he did they refurbed it renamed it space invador 2 and put bars on the cars so no one could fall out.

Why this closed is because a young boy, Christopher Sheratt , he panicked on the dark ride and unfastened his seatbelt. Then he fell out and apparantly got hit by another cart. It was announced in July 2010 that Blackpool Pleasure Beach had sold Space Invader to Brean Leisure Park. After the ride had been sitting standing but not operating (SBNO) for over 18 months, but now the ride’s life is about to be restored and open at the Somerset park next year (2011).

@JakeAlexanderStuidos they are misinformed...the kids in question were well known for messing about on the rides after aquiring used wrist bands i was working that day and he had been on the ride a few times before he fell. His mate he was riding with admitted they were standing on the back...his footprints were on the back of the carrage. it's very sad.

i wasn't meaning to start an argument but people make it sound like ops were not doing their job that day but we were.

i have been to blackpool pleasure beach for ages and it was a man not a child and he stood up because this ride is in almost darkness he couldnt see and died but that was when it was space invaders then they remodled the inside and called it space invaders 2 so thats the actual truth
