  • the design is good though it would be great if you cover the metal parts and screws with foam and a good hard fabric so it would be round and soft to hit it hard and it will look better too, the edges from the metal parts look pretty dangerous if you hit them by mistake. Good job.

  • @DiegoINSOMNIA Thanks for the input. Believe me I haave put a lot of though into considerations such as you suggest. But I am doing this as a hobby. So I am on a budget both financially and with my time. Then we moved to the new house, and whatsnots. Never got around doing so. Today i wuld have a better solution then the metall parts alltogether. But that no longer matters. The timber for a nice round more classical dummy is drying in my garage right now. Will start in spring.

  • hey that was a nice vidio i'm making one out pvc but i want springs for pulling 360% pull a head with give and pre geting to the dummy for out side entering ..but nice idea ya had thumbs up thanks ricky 5 alwaasy

  • @1straycat99 That sounds like a pretty cool design.

Please make sure to upload a clip. I am always eager to learn about new ideas if it comes down to dummy design.

  • I noticed the shoulder arms on your design are parallel, but on the wooden dummies with the circular post, they branch off at quite an angle.

Does this make any difference to practice or is it just designed like that because the original design uses a circular post?

    Thanks.

  • @r3bol I am not quite sure I understande the question, but the angels are more or less a result of the construction. I would have liked them more like in a classical Muk Chong, but that just was not doable.

However the dummy still is very usefull. You got to know what you do and why, then you can adopt to the unfamiuliar angels.

Also the dummy is a prototype. Onde day I will build a MARK II version that is hopefully more like the original.

    thanks for your interes

  • my first dummy was a large sqaure wooden gate post from a deralict farm the arms were three wooden chair legs nailed in the middle arm was screwed in on a shelf L hing it wobbled the arms came loose when i blocked em and my cousin ended up having the square body post as a mantle piece set into the wall above her fireplace of the house they were doing up .its still there today i.i have a proper dummy now and im sure in time you will also thanks for posting keep on chunin

  • @alphaomega309 Thanks for the kind words. You are right, sooner or later I will have a "proper" dummy. Now that I have a house the place is available. Since I am an incurable tinkerer I will however try to make one myself. That way it`s more fun. You where lucky to get a good gate post. My garden post is of course way too thin.

  • Nice job. I like your design here. I am going to make one. Thank you for posting.

  • @blacksilkblacksilk dont worry about what Idiots say you did an amazing job. Thank you for posting this video on alternative way to making the " Muk Yan Jong, The poor mans way " lol. I study Both Korean and Japanese systems and alittle in chinese. I was searching the web on Martial arts stores I coould buy them from. Stores sell the for $700 U.S.A) starting price and up, depending on the quality. thnks again. No matter what keep encouraging ppl by being yourself :)

  • @edwintkdjiujitsu Thanks for the support bro. I noticed the same thing: dummies are absurdly expensive. That`s why I came up with the idea. I recently pimped this design to the next stage, but since the flu got me cold the video will have to wait until I get better. Then i will show the next "stage" in the development.

  • if it could fight back it would kick your ass!! i just dont see the point here? slap and smack some wood junk. i think a bar fight would be a little better but you kids like to play with a dummy. fight me ill lern you how to fight real quick

  • @58belvedere Lucky me the dummy does not fight back then. Just imagine wood and steel kicking my behind. How rude. So, noble commenter I would be honored if you uploaded some of your bar room experience to QUOTE "lern me how to fight real quick" .

Until such times take care and have a nice day

  • @58belvedere its for conditioning and practice you fool, any person who uses one of these dummies would smack you up b4 you got your first punch in. dont be decived by its looks

  • @58belvedere WoW! You have come off as the biggest most immature child on youtube. I believe you could take the cake as most ignorant youtube fool. Do you know that some of the greatest fighters to ever live have trained on wooden dummy's? Ip Man, Bruce Lee, Yip Man, and many other REAL Martial Artists. Please leave this stuff for the adults and go back to school. I'm a martial artist and a fighter who grew up on the streets and you have proven you know nothing about REAL fighting.

    GO GROW UP!!

  • @ProTuner06

For the record...Ip Man and Yip Man are the same person...LOL

  • @58belvedere the wooden dummy is used to perfect your form if you have no partener and fighting some drunk who cant even stand straight is pretty weak pick on some one who can fight and blacksilkblacksilk thank you for the video it was highly informational

  • This is so good i wll be makeing one soon.As ive just started J.K.D.

  • I had the idea to build one and after seeing your video I put it into action . Thanks for the video .

  • make it more round

  • @bowerybaker

Sooner or later I will. This is a prototype. The main goal was to combine the properties of dirtcheap and sturdy. I will abuse this none to test and check the pros and cons, and I will take the nexct design from there. Round main body is definitely high on my list.

    Thanks for dropping by.

Take care and have a nice day

  • @bowerybaker little boy you just play with your wood and you will stay safe. dont go talking your bs with me. I didnt need a dummy for training try real life. what a hard ass beat up on some wood lol oh and you better get a better foot stance you look like a drunk duck. your going to wake up in the real world and get your ass beat lol

  • @58belvedere Everyone point at the internet tough guy and laugh.

Your nothing more than an e-thug. Anyone can ACT and SOUND tough on the internet. Oh, I mean, It's real tough of you to threaten people over the internet knowing you'll never meet them in real life. Once again. Go back to school and maybe mature a little this time you ignorant fool!

  • That is so awesome! I will be making one soon

  • wat are those black stuff?

  • @walking1way

That is material from a heavy duty rubber mat. Those mats can be purchased in hardwarestroes and they are put under laundry machines and such to dampen the vibration. So this is very sturdy and tough rubber material. This way I get the necessary elasticity in the joints.

    Hope that helps.

  • awesome!

  • @chinaboxer

    THX a lot

  • Great Construction!

  • Wooden dummies are martial artist's favorite toys. As a martial artist, who doesn't love this XD?

  • Great job !! Need to make one myself so I don't forget the Bagua wooden dummy routine I do know. Love the conditioning a wooden dummy imparts to the hands and arms. Thanks for the inspiring vid!! Woohoo. :)

  • @ksipa Had this on my mind for quite some time. When my friend and me saw the steel stand we both had the same thought. Any chance of seing the wooden man routine from your bagua branch bro ?

  • nice work on building the wooden dummy Silk . Also thanks for demonstrating at the end of the video 5 stars.

  • @DTGtaihojutsu THX for the kind words. We had a lot of fun, building the dummy. My bosses - also known as wife and daughter - have named the dummy OLGA. Why I have no idea, but the powers that be have so decided in theri infinite wisdom. So OLAG it is. I will let everyone know how well OLGA actually performs.

take care and have a nice weekend

  • @blacksilkblacksilk Olga great name LOL !!!!

  • Excellent video article! Although I do not practice yong chun, I do enjoy having something solid against which to practice. This is a very useful instructional; One doesn't have to spend hundreds of dollars on equipment. I do want to ask though, based upon the construction of this dummy: How hard can you safely strike without breaking or damaging the joins?

  • @mbutchin

That is a question I am curious about myslef. The dummy in this form is a prototype. So I am not sure myself how much punishment it will be able to take. Basically we had spare time at our hands and discovered the steel stand. Upon seeing the stadn i immideatly thought "dummy" and the rest was engineering on the fly. So I will put this dummy through the grinder to check out what it can do and what it cannot do, and where the structiral pros and cons lie.

  • @uberbigbread Actually it was fun. My wife banished me and my friend from the house for some hours, so we decided to have fun.

  • 5/5

Bravo Silk! Looks like you just made yourself a solid training device that normally costs an incredible amount of money!

  • pretty impressive. interesting, you and I are on the same wavelenght. I decided today to explain how to build a wooden dummy. This one is good for some things. The movement of the arms is extremely important as they train turning on and off of subtle but important exhibitions of energy. One example is the bong "dropping" to the tan.

  • You can actually tell how well a person plays the dummy just by listening to the sound of the of it being played. Timing, strength and expression of power, control, transitions, etc., just by listening.

Your enthusiasm never stops and you are a great kung fu devotee! Keep up the good work and thanks for the vid!

  • @heartslord Thank you.

I am very curious about your clip on how to make a dummy. Like you say the devil - but of course also the rewards - normaly have a tendency to lurk in the details.

Being a martial artist with a physics & engineering background I like to reverse engineer what I see in the many vids in utube land. So for many reasons I am looking forward to your "how to" vid on the dummy.

Thanks for the support. have joy and take care.

  • Nice work here. I made something similar but far less sturdy. It quickly fell apart after a few weeks of usage (Plastic tubing, metal pole, etc).

  • @thepathlesspath Thanks!

I have heard from several sides that plastic tubing was no good, so I decided to go for wood and metal only. I hope you will have better luck with your next dummy.

  • Cool, but why not the crossed arms?

  • @ObaNarayanShivaji999 The idea was to get the sturdiest possible dummy for the lowest price using only standard pieces from a hardware store that are easy to come by. This is what my friend and I could conjure up in an afternoon. We could not figure out how to do the crossed arms with tha parts we had so that it wold still be sturdy enough. But hey it is a prototype.

take care my friend and have a nice weekend
