Actually, in wolves, both terms are appropriate depending on the local preference (different parts of the world use the terms differently). It is the same with lions. You may hear lion kit or lion cub. Many animals have multiple terms for their offspring depending on local dialect. So, he's not an idiot, just from a different locale than you :)
