Nice work joy presence voice. Did you know Yeats asked his poet friend AE (George Russell) what he thought about his (Yeat's) poems. AE told him all the poems were written from his head and not heart, and that he may want to rewrite them from the heart. So Yeats rewrote all his poems. AE has lots of poetry. He was an Irish Theosophist, mystic, lover of earth and land. -robert of mayflower, ps. heard my song Weave Your Wings, mayflower bookshop on utube?
I think it's beautiful. What will she use it for...is the hard part! She would be great at Voice-Overs for Disney movies! Maybe specialize in Voice-Overs for cartoons! I know of a guy who makes 15 million/year doing five voice-over characters per year...for cartoons! (Including The Simpsons) Think about that!
Elizabeth captures the essence of the poem "A Crazed Girl", by William Butler Yeats, in soprano, very well. The poem is about a mentally unstable 27 year old Margaret Ruddock which William Yeats met in Barcelona, in 1938. The poem does make me think about mental illness - why does such a thing exist? What makes people lose their sanity? Demons? Is it stress? A neurochemical imbalance? Something genetically inherited? Something in the air? I digress and really must say...very well done.
Elizabeths voice has an unearthly aura to it, which compliments this powerful and emotional poem. The rippling tide of the piano ebbs and flows as wave upon wave of emotions crash and flounder. A very powerful piece - a most inutitive interpretation by vocalist and composer. Well done!
the singer's voice was wisely chosen. i do like the unexpected "screeches" that try to capture the words, and how the music constantly changes to match the words. for example, it was all flowing when she sang, "a beautiful lofty thing." i really liked the song's beginning it encouraged me to keep listening. thank you for sharing.
I really enjoyed this composition and performance. I listened quite a few times in an attempt to capture it all. As a long time Yeats reader, I feel this does him justice. Elizabeth handles the complexity of the text in a beautiful way. I imagine a more dramatic voice for this piece, but I am biased. :)
Are we to comment on the material or the performer? This is a demanding piece of interesting composition, handled well by a promising singer. Personally, I prefer more traditional styles of music, but well done singer and composer!
Mr. Hovatter, Yes, I like it. The soprano did justice to the composition with great expression...kind of reminds me of Angela Gheorghiu in her younger years. God bless you.
Very interesting writing. You are clearly have 20th century harmonic sensibilities. I am absolutely in love with the melodic shape from about 2:00 on. However, because of the range it is composed in some of the words are very hard to understand.
A magical realization of the power of Yeats to express the abstract, offered in fundamentally resonant vocal art and visionary piano expressions. The writing is as fine as any of the art songs composed by Aaron Copland, Samuel Barber or Ned Rorem, with full emotional impact and fluid dialogues engaging from the spirit. Altogether quite remarkable, Kyle, and a classic piece of originality on the contemporary American scene. **********
The complex meaning of he poetry blends perfectly with your dynamic musical creation. Bravo! Elizabeth's voice is full of surprises, emotion, and is extremely well developed and beautiful. What a heavenly combination.
Absolutely beautiful. A new twist to beautiful poetry. Her singing is very powerful and she acted perfectly like a "crazed girl". The piano part was fascinating to listen to. Her voice was perfectly tuned and well produced. Magical and chilling piece!!!!
Amazing vocal display,i like how challenging this is to listen to,makes a change from all the fluffy stuff thats been going around forever.Nice work all.tc.
That was an incredibly moving setting of Yeats. Her insanity was definitely heard, yet I can tell that there was some genuine affection for her as well at 1:01. Didn't she attempt to commit suicide in the ocean? Write a full cycle my friend!
Impressive!

Done in the manner of the art songs from Yeats's era and yet, somehow, it has taken nearly a century for someone to take this approach.
