thwe film is crap beacuse there no such person as jimmy malone the closest person in real life a italian cop called sal montella so its a swine film swin flu contains in this film.
I like this movie so much more than his rendition of Scarface for instance. Even not taking the music into account, it's a masterpiece. The "Battleship Potemkine" scene is one famous example of how good DePalma can be. I've seen this movie when it was released in theatre in France - that would be 1987 - and I was trapped in the thirties from the first sequence on. I felt so bad when Wallace and Malone got shot. I was scared shitless by DeNiro. I was a little guy in Chicago! Very good memories.
I love gangster´s movies. When I saw it first time, I couldn´t believe someone is able to film such great movie. This Brian De Palma is real genius. It corresponds to my image about high-quality movie.
@ukhistorian agreed :) he did amazing. Loved his character and his acting.. especially Richard bradford who played the cop who was rivals with Jimmy malone XD haha i loved that guy in this movie he also play captain foley a similar role in the movie Hoodlum..
The opening to 'Signs' also reminds me of this in the way the presentation of the credits and the suspenseful music are used to foreshadow the movie itself
1930. Prohibition has transformed Chicago into a City at War. Rival gangs compete for control of the city's billion dollar empire of illegal alcohol, enforcing their will with the hand grenade and tommy gun. It is the time of the Gang-lords. It is the time of Al Capone.

Saw the film a week ago, and the moment this music appeared I was instantly hooked. While watching through the titles: Music by Ennio Morricone. Explains a lot, he truly is a genius!
This movie was FAR from historically acurate but the script was as strong as the entire cast which is why I can simply still suspend my disbelief 23-years later.
I just watched this movie yesterday, and it became one of my favourite gangster movies. Brian De Palma is a genius, the cast is perfect and the setting was more than beautiful. It captures the 30's so good, it is almost unmatched. I really loved it, it had a style of it's own, not imitating any other film I've seen. It's really a masterpiece.
You are right this a masterpiece. the movie and the song. this si the most thrilling theme i've ever heard- used to perfection in Ness and Nitti's shootout. huge of fan of the untouchables!!
@DanteLiquidus ...except that the ending was completely inaccurate. Look up Capone along with the name Frank J. Wilson. If you've never heard of him, it's because his story is not as action film worthy, but he's the guy who's investigation actually got Capone sent to prison.
Just to clarify Eliot Ness was awesome in real life, but he ended up contributing nothing to the actual CONVICTION of Al Capone.
You had to be there in a darkened theatre on opening weekend for this film, watching the simple black and white titles of the credits- and to have this theme just jump out and grab you. I know, I was there.
@doctorelefun Agreed. I, too, saw this in the theater when it first came out. The title credits were themselves considered groundbreaking at the time, even mentioned a lot in the reviews. The music helped to make it, though. This is a classic movie theme. What won the Oscar the year it came out?
@RollOnToVictory i'd be go visiting eliot ness :D and showing him everything from today i brought back then taking pictures with him in color then i use the time machine to come back here! XD hahahaah the perfect plan.
@RollOnToVictory yes!! but using the time machine haha!! :D i come back to 2011 with pictures and videos of me with him in color or me elliot ness and al capone all come back to the future! haha.
this reminds of the death rattle music from once upon a time in the west

The chase between Ness and Nitti is definitely the best scene in the film, made all the better with this awesome composition!

This composer is incredible, as is this soundtrack. Great opening music,
fabulous finale music. His music on American subjects and the old West are best.
I don't care for his scores for some foreign films.

Remember watching this in ABC 1 in Lothian Road here in Edinburgh and as soon as the music started I thought WOW!
Another amazing piece which I have had the honour of hearing "live" when I went to see him in London.
Worth EVERY penny.
