I'm still a DIY freak, even if it's considered fashion. I like altering my clothes and wearing my hair in a mohawk, it has nothing to do with being more or less punk rock, or looking a certain "uniform" way, it has to do with personal taste. I think what you believe in is what makes you punk rock. It could be anything from veganism to anarchism to nihilism to communism, it doesn't really matter, the music and the mindset are what connects a punk to another punk, not what they're wearing.

Punk is a state of mind...unfortunately in order to be responsible or earn some type of living we have to subjugate ourselves to a point because the cold, slimy clasp of the system has too strong a hold on us...however some do hold on to the dream of one day working themselves back out of the systems grasp to reclaim an identity that they ever so reluctantly forced under ground...at least that's what I do so I guess that makes me a quasi-poser...fuck conformity!

I sort of agree with this. Image is a very integral part of who we are but not on the grand scheme of things. DIY is a punk ethic meaning create your own fashion... the reason "punk" looks like a uniform now is that punk music went into the mainstream. This wasn't so in the 80's, and her dialogue and understanding is years ahead of what people understood as "punks." All fashion niches could be seen as uniforms... its more about being part of AND BEYOND your image, thats rebellion.

@Vertigopills DIY isnt creating your own fashion it's a fashion in and of itself, a form of conformity not for rejecting main stream fashion trends but for creating a sort of hegemonic "uniform of rebellion" (spikes/patches). "Punk" culture is largely the same from America to New Zealand. Actual individualism and freedom from capitalism isnt going to be found in the punk scene as well meaning as it is. It's a good spring board for more concrete/world altering positions though.

You can buy "punk" "goth" and "emo" clothes at any mall, right next to A&F and Old Navy, and they cost just as much, if not more than "preppy" clothes, unlike the rags old skool punks wore. So it is in fact "fashion" now. The point of this movie (or one of them) is that they were all really just posers, to some degree, as most people are. If you care more about how the world sees you than how you see the world and what you believe, then you're a poser, no matter what trend you're following.
