holy shit, take 1 part outright goodtime/cuteness, add another 1 part old school johhny thunders/new york i am what i am coolness, then add another quart part busker, finally add great songwriting nous, shake, & hey presto, really good shit
This is classic Jonathan. The crowd's all quiet at first and they probably don't know who he is, but he wins them over immediately with his charm and great lyrics. Old school flat haired coco FTW!

@extremelybusy123 : yeah, that's it... he's like a punk/folk/poet songwriter with a sweet sense of humor. Just going from three songs I've seen so far... I see the Lou Reed delivery but I hadn't put my finger on it.
This guy is so origonal , no wonder he's not a big popular star ... I love him for not giving up on his full out personal delivery and non techno sell out sound .
@DJkevvykev I totally agree that this would have been perfect for Johnny Cash to sing. Among his many qualities, Cash had an offbeat sense of humor, and I think that he would have appreciated this song. It is certainly in his style. Remember, "A Boy Named Sue" was also not exactly a conventional country song. I can just imagine Johnny singing, "Salt Lake City, everybody off..."
can' t understand why he was never a lot more successful, seen him about 15 times in the uk (always in smal clubs) and never seen anyone hold an audience like him.
@felfelfelicus I assume your sentiment was in reference to my Daniel Johnston comment. Apologies for being flippant. Daniel's a great artist, too. My view is I didn't like the way he was (and probably still is) exploited by those who were more fascinated with his mental illness than his art. For too many a lot of his early hip appeal was for the wrong reasons.
JR is a true artist. Saw him in a tiny cafe in Eugene, OR. a few years ago. Electricity went out during the first song, everybody hushed up and he said "This is so great, cos this is the atmosphere we're always hoping to get wherever we play, and here it is without even trying." He had the whole audience of ~150 people eating out of his hand. It was so amazing. God bless him. Totally agree with Deweypug: Not only MY musical world would be drab, but so would music itself. There's nobody like him.
No one is better than "Jon-O"...except maybe "Smokey"....But Mr.Robinson isn't as sincere. Hearts on Sleeves Unite! Win over ALL "Audiences"...Alright!
Other people have pointed it out, but it's amazing to see him finally win over the crowd with that "minor chord" quip at 2:32, and see how when they finally get it, they GET IT and go crazy and he feeds right off the energy. I think he qualifies as a genius.
I am so thankful we have JR, my music world would have been so empty. I also sitting here watching this thinking, if the cheese didn't slide off the cracker for Daniel Johnston, would he be doing stuff like Jonathan?
he says "minor chord, that was a sad part". Minor chords are generally used in sad or dark songs. but the song he's playing doesn't have minor chords in it... so he played that one chord just to be cute. afterall, he's the king of being cute.
Greyhound costs as much, if not more for the same trip I choose to go on. Plus, it'll take days to get there. Sad. This generation will never know how awesome it is to just pay $60 and take a week off and go wherever.
I never knew about this guy, just watching him today, he seems great. Love the songs and the attitude he has seem really kind and sweet.
