I tried it too and it worked! You just drill a hole through the plastic near the end of the pump of the same size as the hole in a real flute. The easiest way is to use a Dremel with a conic grinding head (wide end towards the pump) to form a certain edge. Then you should remove both springs to achieve a larger pitch range.

I saw this show at the flute convention a week and a half ago. If you had seen the whole show, you would also be laughing. It was supposed to be funny. He was also playing on a carrot, a human femur, all kinds of light-up flutes, ethnic flutes and various contraptions made of toy flutes. He's retired and having fun. Just because he wrote several books on flute technique doesn't mean all of his performances have to be serious.

I think the pianist made more mistakes than the bicycle pump! An A1 piece of music loaded with comic potential but this didn't hit the spot with me - too literal and very accurate, considering, and the crowd wanted something else.

I've never heard such an expressive bicycle pump! This is hilarious. It just goes to show you a good player can make any instrument sound good ( ha ha).
