At times, Mike Palmeteer could play goal like with the best of them but at other times just seemed to look disinterested. I'm sure playing for a so-so Leafs team didn't help eventhough he had a good defenseman in front of him in Salming. Still, he played his heart out for The Maple Leafs and was exciting to watch.
@5inthehole Yeah, but the most beautiful thing is Calgary is the only visiting team to ever win and parade the cup around in the Montreal Forum. My friend described it like "a temple that was being desecrated." Lol.
Love the Leafs jerseys from this era! Mike Palmateer owned a restaurant for years in my hometown. Think he eventually got into real estate. He was great in net for the Buds.
Bit of trivia: The Atlanta Flames' move to Calgary was the only instance in the history of the four major sports when an American-based team relocated to Canada.
@simpsonsfan2007 That's a nice sentiment, but with Bettman running the show, I doubt it. Having teams in cities that actually care about hockey (i.e. Canadian cities) is not in Bettman's grand scheme of things.
this was the best time in hockey.every team had a great goalie, buffalo had don edwards. boston ,cheevers.canadians, dryden. rangers,davidson.kings,vachon.northstars gilles meloches.islanders, resch and billy smith.flyers bernie parent.and on and on. but the greatest of all ,chicago blackhawks TONY ESPOSITO!!
Their original owner, Tom Cousins went nearly bankrupt in the real estate collapse of the '70s and sold out to Scalbania in Calgary before the likes of Ted Turner et al found out.
The defender who makes the save at 1:05 when Palmateer was out at the blueline is actually current Leaf Head Coach Ron Wilson (#14), although he is mistakenly identified by Bill Hewitt as Paul Gardner (who wore #18 at this time)
Yup...Ron Wilson...who spent as much of his career in the minors as he did in the NHL...I seem to remember he could hardly skate backwards, and that he spent a summer training with Borje Salming learning how to skate properly.
Love the Guy dressed up in a Confederate Uniform waving the rebel flag! cool touch! it would be nice if they played dixie after a thrashers goal now but with all the PC idiots now that might not happen. I was born after the flames left town so i grew up with the thrashers and knights but as a history buff it is always good to remember your past, one good thing is it seems like flames games didn't have as many opposing teams fans as thrashers games do now. Go Thrashers!
hockey the way it used to be before bettman..... love how the leafs came off the bench when they scored the 2 goals. Nowadays, Bettman would fine the team about $50k for that! What a joke the NHL has become.
Someone holding the Canadian flag upside down in Atlanta during a Leafs playoff game in '79 Very ironic considering that the National Guard accidentally carried the Canadian flag upside during the National Anthems before game 1 of the '92 World Series. The way some Canadians reacted was embarassing, they insisted it was done on purpose and wanted to create an international incident. The PA announcer apologized before the anthems on game 2. Here we have someone who was probably Canadian do that.
Wow, what a game hockey used to be.. Very flashy goaltending by Palmateer, a really good showman and goalie as well it seems. But judging by old games like these, it was no wonder they scored so many goals back, defense was plain terrible. Still, that was way better than the New Jersey -rat trap style of play. Thanks for the great video!

Thank you Atlanta for giving us two hockey teams and proving Bettman's theory of NHL marketability in southern states is baseless folly.

@KosaiAvonej Just think of it this way; 9 years after they left, the Flames won a Stanley Cup. It's just sad it didn't happen in Atlanta.

Those flames jerseys are nice. How come jerseys are so plain now?
beaverdammer 5 months ago
Anyone kniow; has Calgary ever wore the old Atlanta Flames jersey as a special jersey? The do have the little "A" for the assistant captains.
5inthehole 7 months ago
The Leafs always used to win those first round best of 3 series.

Wild game. Leafs barely hung on.

Joel quenneville was in this at 3:43. He coached Chicago to the Cup last year and St Louis to the 2000 Presidents Trophy.

@Lava1964 Could happen again after this season, with the Coyotes and/or Thrashers (ironically).

I think they moved after the next season.

Nope, they moved after the 1980 season.
Their original owner, Tom Cousins went nearly bankrupt in the real estate collapse of the '70s and sold out to Scalbania in Calgary before the likes of Ted Turner et al found out.

No, the Flames stayed in Atlanta through the 79-80 season, then moved to Calgary.

Excellent video of this memorable game. I remember it for the brawl (of course) and the clutch performances by Salming and Palmateer.
Get a load of the two fans waving flags. First, the Georgian hillbilly waving the Confederate flag. Does he even look like a hockey fan?
And what's with the dumb blonde holding the Canadian flag upside down?

I say the same, awesome 1970:s NHL hockey. Players still playing without helmets. This is real mid, late 1970:s style of hockey.
