@emhuang321 rubato is where you sorta "fix up" the rhythm of the piece to incorporate your own style. For example, songs like Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 or Bach's Prelude to his first cello suite would sound so bland if we played it as written. Rubato is a term that allows us to play it with style, simply through changing tempo here and there :)
@snowking: At the time of this recording I was playing on an Alessandro Mantovani 1857, but not proven as authentic. It is being repaired now, and will hopefully get certified.
la pianista suona bene: lascia stare. Questa sonata è difficilissima per il pianista soprattutto per le sonorità. E poi si sente che la sala dove i due hanno eseguito è una sala piena di eco.. Il violoncellista è splendido!!! In tutto!!!
wow i love the rich deep sound you can get on the cello!!! although i think the cello sounds a bit to overpowering to the cello, but still amazing!!!!!! ^^

It's good for being 14. I don't mean that to sound 'jerky' since most 14 years olds are more accomplished at masturbating to Britney Spears videos than trying to master compositions by Brahms.
The performance certainly isn't without it's faults (rhythm & pacing mostly, tone is nice) I mean I'm not forgetting Rostopovich any time soon.
However, they are off to a great start and I'm sure as they age it will be truly a signature piece for them.
the piano was far too loud, and sometimes completely drowned out the cello melody. Understandably this is a sonata for "Piano and Cello", but there are moments when the cello has the melody, and you can't hear it because the piano is far too loud! in my eyes this spoils an awesome performance on the cellist's part =(
It's funny, you will see the exact contrary opinion among the comments on the 3rd movement.....so I guess, it is, after all, a matter of personal likes and dislikes.:)
First of al i must compliment on excellent play but i do think you rushed the piece quite a bit to much to the point that it disturbes listening quite mutch.
May i ask how long you have/had played when you performed this video.
Great form and tempo to start! I'm teaching this now, and have performed it several times. My only suggestion for you: On the parts early on in the movement when both you and the piano have "moving" notes, make sure you keep the tempo steady and make sure not to rush through those parts. Otherwise, great job, and keep it up!
Bravo! You are an exceptionally talented cellist and musician, and Beatrice also. May I ask where you are studying? Take people's comments on board but at the same time don't take them too seriously and above all don't let anyone supress your freedom and spontaneity. Good luck for the future!
The first thing you need to learn is that your on-stage performance must not vary from what you do in practice. Don't panic and hurry along, especially if you make a mistake. The substance (feeling, interpretation) is what's important: even Gregor Piatigorsky, Jascha Heifetz, and Vladimir Horowitz made mistakes.
I think every performance of one and the same piece is unique. It's the varying emotion that makes it such. Of course, one should have a general idea how to perform the work and practice it accordingly, but trying to distance onself from the stage emotion is like cutting one's own wings. Some musicians lose their passion as they grow and let routine take over. I am not one of them, and hope I will never be. It's true I have a lot to learn, so thank you for the advice!
I personally think that the piece sounds better slower. But then again, i too am 15 and playing this, and my tone is nowhere as good as that, so i should'nt really be talking.
you have an amazingly dark and rich tone, but your only problem is tempo. You speed up too much in certain places and your coordination with the piano gets all messy. but still very good, this is my favorite cello sonata, thank you for sharing this video.
Rushing has always been a problem for me, and on stage it tends to worsen. But here we had very limited time to pracyice with the pianist, who was also 14 y.o. Teaming up takes a bit more time. Thanks for commenting!
wow, i have been playing the cello for 10 years and i could never play this well. This is amazing, his intonation and tone are amazing. Keep playing stuff man!!! You're amazing!!!
very good. one suggestion though. it doesnt have to be legato the whole time. let it breathe a little. as if you were singing. a singer would not sing this all in one breath. otherwise, keep up the good work! :)
i like it but too "wavy" u know. u play some notes without vibrato and then slowly vibrate. I think you should sustain the sound fully.Good job btw. : ]
I love how the kids in the background don't even seem to appreciate it. I'm 16 and a cello player. Wow!!!! I must say that you are amazing. Keep up the amazing work!!
I daresay you have a brilliant future to look forward to! The pianist was also superb but, as someone stated previously, the lid should have been closed. Either way, my congratulations to the both of you!
Well, thanks for that comment! I hope the right people see it :). There is more to it - we played in a chirch, where the acoustic is not suitable for this sonata. The pianist is great for our age, but we only met a week before this concert. We simply were short of time to team up!
I dont think it drowns him out. I think the sound balance is actually pretty good. What alot of cellists don't realize about this piece is that the piano is showcased moreso than the cello. There are many times that the cello is playing counter melodies, and is really just background. Very well played on both parts, bravo!
Some places you played a bit weirdly, rhythmically speaking.

Ohwow. This sounds like the recording I have of this peice. o.o I've been trying to decide what to learn next, and I think this has swayed me.
Very impressive, well played. A very nice sounding cello, too. I bet it'll be certified authentic. xD
I see the makings of a great cellist, tho you're basically already there.

You're going to be an incredible cellist!
One advice to the pianist: GET YOUR FOOT OFF THE PEDALE!
Maybe it's just a bad recording, but it sounds MUDDY.
By the way, whose recordings do you listen to?
My favs are Rostropovich and du Pre. I don't know a lot of cellists because I'm a pianist.
Can't wait to hear you perform Delius's Cello Concerto!

i would say the passage of quarter notes backed by piano triplets that starts around 1:40 is rushed kind of out of the style of the piece.
at the same time, your tone pretty much makes up for that. im 15 and playing the same piece, and you definitely sound more mature than me.
also, wheres the rest of it? the f-grace notes-f passage and then the ending really make the whole thing.
