Actually most of you are wrong. Halloween is not Irish, because not all the Celts were Irish. A lot of them were Scottish, Welsh and English. Second, Halloween is a combination of both Celtic and Pagan traditions (neither of which even believed in the Devil). Thirdly, the whole reason for dressing up as something scary, was to ward off evil spirits by pretending to 'blend in' as one of them. What you're missing is the almost complete secularization of Halloween in 19th century America. It became a party night & lost whatever Catholic traits it had in a mainly Protestant or mixed Protestant/Catholic setting. Halloween as it came to be in the U.S. was mainly imported by Irish immigrants in the 1800s and seized on as a night for revelry by others. It's basically Mardi Gras with monsters and spooks.
If you mentioned "satan" to one of the Trinovantes or Belgae or to a Roman follower of Pomona or Ceres, they'd just stare at you blankly. Their religions lacked the simpleminded dualism of the Abrahamic faiths. It's not all good versus evil all the time with their world views. You just missed the point of everything I posted, but, since you see the world through a rather narrow lens, that doesn't surprise me. In Romania there are two Halloweens: One 1st November (The Day of the Dead), and the other one later in November somewhere around 20th and 30th which Saint Andrew is celebrated and people dress in animals, monsters, etc.

Don't forget the fact that Christmas apparently conveniently falls on what once was the "Birthday of the Unconquered Sun," the main festival of a major rival to Christianity in the late Roman Empire, the worship of the god Sol Invictus (favored by the Emperor Aurelian, among others). There may be a connection to Mithraism, also, another major rival faith.

Well, it's not as if the kingdoms and republics that were Pagan or Buddhist or Hindu were all peaceful with their neighbors by any means, but I do think that crusades and jihad were unknown to them, unless they were reacting to the Abrahamic monotheists' aggression. For example, the ancient Romans were no strangers to warfare, but, provided you paid homage to the cult of the Emperor, they tended to let you follow your religion in peace. Oh, yes, I have most of the stand-alone internet radios in my house programmed with Radio Dismuke as one of the selections. There once was another, similar station, that featured recordings from the 1890s through the early 1920s and fit nicely with Dismuke, but, unfortunately, it went off the air a year or two back.

It spread around the academic world that scholars were now pronouncing “Celt” like “kelt.” How this trend really got started is unknown.

Perhaps that also played a part in the change. Whatever the reasons, scholarly circles now consider “kelt” to be the correct pronunciation among the educated.

If the British dialect says we should pronounce the word letter as "leh-uh/let-uh" that does not mean that I cannot pronounce the word letter as "ledder" as the Americans pronounce.
American English is the most spoken dialect of English you like it or not, so get over it.

Actually most of you are wrong. Halloween is not Irish, because not all the Celts were Irish. A lot of them were Scottish, Welsh and English. Second, Halloween is a combination of both Celtic and Pagan traditions (neither of which even believed in the Devil). Thirdly, the whole reason for dressing up as something scary, was to ward off evil spirits by pretending to 'blend in' as one of them. P.S I'm an atheist who happens to base my opinions on that little thing called evidence.

What you're missing is the almost complete secularization of Halloween in 19th century America. It became a party night & lost whatever Catholic traits it had in a mainly Protestant or mixed Protestant/Catholic setting. The Pagan customs are there, but they also lost any religious significance a very long time ago. Except for neopagans, Halloween's about the most secular holiday imaginable.
However, if you see "satan" everywhere, then you'll see him here too, I guess.

The holiday celebrated by the Celts was the end of the harvests and beginning of the new year for them where spirits could enter our world. The church changed to day of All Saints Day Halloween comes from Hallowmas which means "Mass of saints", the day before is "All hallows eve" or Halloween. It came to America through the Irish. Originally for fun, "Trick or treat" was more of extortion, give us treats or we'll vandalize your property. The concept of Satan came in through OTHER religions.

Technically, Halloween's a pre-Christian festival--an amalgamation of pagan Celtic and Celtic Roman practices, with an overlay of Roman Catholicism and British folk customs. So, as the idea of "Satan" is alien to paganism, it was not a "satanic" holiday in origin or practice. Halloween as it came to be in the U.S. was mainly imported by Irish immigrants in the 1800s and seized on as a night for revelry by others. It's basically Mardi Gras with monsters and spooks.

Their religions lacked the simpleminded dualism of the Abrahamic faiths. It's not all good versus evil all the time with their world views. Well I have studied religion and all religions can be traced back to shamanistic practices, polytheism and ancestor worship. We see such beliefs in all continents, predating all monotheistic belief systems. Also get you facts about Samhain right, it was originally a harvest festival, a final gathering before winter. but there was also the believe that the Celtic Otherworld(which was not seen as evil) could have an influence on this world around that time.
