Wait, he whispers "Rosebud" then drops the snow globe, breaking it, which alerts the nurse to come into the room and find him dead. So how the hell did anyone know he said Rosebud? No one was around. It's the old saying "If a tree falls in the forest, and no one is around to hear it, does it make a noise?" No one heard him say it. The opening scene contains a plot hole for the basis of the entire film.
@Berengier817 A servant heard it. He was standing somewhere at the side of the room watching. Also, when they say "He died alone" they mean he died with no loved ones at his side.
@AliaSparrow Alright, do me a favor...tell me where the servant is at in the scene? Where can I see him? What second marker is he clearly visible at? Why didn't he walk up to the body? Does the servant just stay in the room at night and watch him sleep?
Dimwitted WMG morons, grubbing for pennies. That they enforce this artistic blockade is tantamount to an admission that they have all the creative sensibility of a lousy shyster.
These clips are free advertising! How can WMG and all of the movie studios and record companies be so thick as to not understand? Millions of people see clips posted on YouTube. They see clips of movies and songs that they have never seen or heard before. This inspires them to go out and spend money to buy dvd's and cd's. Money that companies like WMG would never receive if not for these clips that they keep trying to destroy!!!
That comment about this film predicting Michael Jackson's life was an astute one. Jackson, like Kane, had his childhood innocence taken from him for the pursuit and exploitation of monetary gain. Jackson spent a great amount of resources in the pursuit of re-capturing that naivety and perceptive freedom of youth. No one word can describe a man's life, and perhaps we should try to reformulate our viewpoints of these men in recognition of their early developmental flaws and misdirects.
Warner Music Group is trying to make people hate them. Doing a pretty good job of it too. They are the IRS of media. If they had any brains they would realize that these clips are free advertising for their product.
You know, if WMG has a problem with people hearing the soundtrack, why don't they just round up and destroy every DVD of Citizen Kane? Keep it secret that way!

Look Oreson Wells is a great actor and all, but this movie had some scenes that would not change for 2 straight minutes, no soundtrack, and very silent mumbling between a doubtful lady and a very lost old man.
For 2 straight minutes? OOOOO. I know it's asking a viewer of today too much to sit still for 2 minutes, but still...
No soundtrack? What the hell do you mean? Bernard Herrmann's soundtrack is one of the greatest in movies!
"Very silent mumbling between a doubtful lady and a very lost old man..." A pretty description of the film if there ever was one! I wonder who the "doubtful lady" is? ;-)
actuly at the time of its release it was a commerical disasterpice,HEY THAT RHYMES! but it was still a good move. Truth be told im surpirsed the guy didnt kill over sooner, so incase u were wondering what it relly meant, it was the name of his slead when he was a kid and broke but was happy as opposed to rich and misserable
true, the film was thought to be too close a representation of William Randolf Hurst and was more or less pushed out of theaters. your a douche bag for giving away the ending though hahah
His butler states he was with Kane when he dies. Though you don't see anyone else in the room with him when he says his last word, there's no reason to believe he was alone at the moment since the room is never fully shown.
Exactly. I can't believe so much has been made of this "mistake" when it's explicitly stated in the film that the butler heard him say it. "Well, no-one else is shown in that room except for him!" Yeah, right. I wonder if it has ever occured to the critics that it also isn't show that there ISN'T anyone else in that room?
I think the reason Welles chose to accept this "mistake" as fact was that it was yet another chance for him to take a snipe at Mankiewicz (cf. "Rosebud").
orsen welles was asked this very question by a reporter and his reply was "Lets just never ask that question again." The same question obviously came up again and again though, so he he stuck with the version that hellpop said.
it was implied that someone else was in the room....the clue was when the lights were turned off, and we all know that kane was in his bed dying so it wasn't him that did, also...someone had to summon the nurse to come...so the butler had to be in the room, but had they shown him it would of ruin part of the mystery
I love how Welles frames his shots so that the light in the window always falls in the exact same spot as in the shot before it. Even reflected in the water! brilliant. way ahead of his time.
Yes!! And few people notice that the snow remains on the screen even after Kane loses the snowball. I've heard since I was a child about Kane's fame but the first time I rented this movie and I saw this opening I was shocked and I had to watch it entirely.
Naah... well, it's obvious that we like this kind of movies and we focus in this kind of details. But a lot of people, addicted to junk blockbuster- commercial movies and popcorn wont seem that kind of details if they get paid to do it. Most of people only want to see sex and explotions, and not a smart artistic film like this one.
This movie is GREAT. I love the opening scene. Did you know that Disney created this house (in the opening scene) and later used it for the Walt Disney castle? Of course they made it prettier for Disney World but it was inspired by this film.
What do you mean when you say that Disney created Xanadu? I know that they used a painting for this film, so are you saying that Disney is responsible for the painting?
My film history II professor told the class that the same person who designed the mansion for this film also designed the Disney castle and Disney's castle was made from the same structure and idea (of course with more color and beauty).
i love this movie. they used to have the whole thing up on youtube until very recently. Now its been deleted. Could u post the ending 2? (or better yet the whole movie)
Oh! No voice. silent movie? fuck you Warner Music Group .

PLEASE ANSWER MY QUESTION
Can someone please tell me what the window with the light mean?
notice the window with the light on is in the same place through the whole video
veginamonster 3 months ago
I don't know.. it is kind of cool to watch this scene without the music. The best movie's story can be told without sound.

JeezVegas 3 years ago
From a visual perspective, this is a perfect film.
It may not have the greatest story, you can argue over pacing, dull moments, etc. You have a right to say parts are just boring.
But visually this movie remains groundbreaking, a textbook, a bible, for Cinematographers and Production Designers
AFI might praise it a bit too much, but then, AFI focuses weighs imagery over narrative...so it makes sense.

So beautiful, so brilliant. And Herrmann's score...with the light and image. A great human achievement = like Chartres or the Pyramids.

2 straight minutes of mumbling is what I meant. And the doubtful lady, towards the end was Kane's wife. She had not seen anything in him anymore...
That's okay, I understand some people enjoy this film. I'd rather see On the Waterfront over this, though. Now that was a good movie.
