I live about a mile from this place, and as of 2011, the middle portion ( the old assembly line) is gone. They left one wall from the old assembly line intact and they now use the empty lot to park John Deere Seeding Cylinders (irony). The western half of the plant is still used for cab production in Navistar Trucks.
i like the part at 4:00, it show a classic Farmall Super M, as soon as i get some money, i am going on a hunt to find one because our farm had one, but my granpa got rid of it because it had no live power and that was the only problem with them
God I hated to see that happen, I worked on these fine tractors. Also a John Deere dealer service manger in 1984 tell me the same thing, He also did not want that to happen. God bless IH.
I lived a few years in Moline, and saw the Farmall works in Rock Island many times and met a lot of the men who worked there. When the plant closed in 1985, it devastated the community. An area that had seen the Rock Island Railroad shut down and close it's Silvis shops in 1980, now faced another difficulty. And kudo's to Max, for bringing this to us.
My maternal grampa was the Traffic Manager for Farmall back in the 30s until his untimely passing.
My late father owned an IH shop in northern Iowa and I grew up around Farmall equipment. He refused to deal with John Deer ( lol ) and was stubbornly loyal to Farmall-IH.
Those memories are pricesless, as was the quality and beauty of International! It was a sad sad day when they closed the doors at Farmall. I'm glad my daddy didn't live to see that day. It would have broken his heart!
They should make a show about Allis-Chalmers! Allis made some good tractors. they made a lot of stuff! anything and everything at the West Allis plant. IH is good to. Sad that IH and AC came to an end.
what the hells wrong with us, how can we let this happen.i understand that was a while ago but we need to stop importing crap and get back to building american quality like the IH
That was a great video and a damn shame that the compnay and factory are gone. CNH builds blue and red tractors on the same line here in Racine. Oh the blasphemy.
My dad worked at I.H. during the 70's. He then retired, and to this day, he still receives his pension money. To him, it was a great place to work, and be a team. I, too, agree with dad.
In those times, it was IH, and then John Deere. John Deere is still alive & kicking in Moline, IL.
Mike, I worked at Farmall Works from 1974-1984. Could you ask your father to let me know how I can apply for my pension? I had worked just over the ten years required to lock in my pension.
Definitely a sad day in history when that place closed. I grew up on my grandfathers farm in Lexington, Illinois and we had all IH equipment. My grandfather took me to that plant in 70 or 71 for a tour. I about cried when i saw this aired on RFDTV. I literally grew up in the seat of a Farmall tractor from the time i was an infant riding on my grandfathers lap all day long in the fields. I own a 1957 Farmall 350 now, and hopefully in the future a few more like we had back on the farm. IH always.
Testing those new tractors would have been a great job. Hard to believe how many they built in a months time.

IH and Allis Chalmers Fell in the early 80's, yet when Chrysler and GM where in trouble Obamma stepped right in, kind of ticks me off in a way......
snowman9980 1 year ago
@snowman9980 Don't forget that the federal government bailed out Chrysler the first time at the same time IH and Allis were in big trouble.

When IH fell, they had created the combine of the future, as well as great farm and garden equipment. Just imagine where they would've been today.

Would have liked to have seen em save some of it for a museum.

You just need to add a 560 diesel to complete your collection. A powerhouse, as all FArmalls are.

Thanks for the memories. I remember how concerned the community was when Farmall would strike of have layoffs.
