the amazing race made me want to learn about other cultures, travel and venture around the world and showed me how amazing and interesting the world is
The only thing I watch on my TV is the "mindless" NFL games and other sports leagues (MLB, NHL, NBA, etc.) ESPN is on my TV right now as I type this. I don't know anybody in my life who doesn't watch TV. It's a difficult thing to stop once you have the routine down.
u dont learn anything??? come on guys obviously not true..even the lowliest reality show has some value in that they give you a sense of other peoples lives & can help to foster empathy, increase tolerance for differences, etc....& the history channel, discovery, animal planet, nat geo, & even bbc are great....there's even this show called TYT on Current TV.........

Reading stuff is just sitting there wasting time too. So is going to a museum. It's called art. Not all of it is good art, but not all paintings in the museum are good art. I wish people would stop treating the medium of television like it's just some idiot box.
wow. I need to take Ana's job because I spend 15 hours out of my day reading about politics, and current events. Using all media sources. My break from it is watching informative shows like TYT XD
I hate flipping through channels. I can't tell it what to do, or what to see. I prefer my shit online. so if it is a new episode and my friends want me to hang out with them. I can hang out with my friends and watch it later. I had a friend who was the opposite who would say "my show is on so I can't hang out" and we are like "WTF, its 2012 bitch get with it."
Guess I'm probably the only one who does watch TV. I still browse online, but just watch TV when I have nothing to do after homework and exams. (So many shows I still watch) Does it interfere with my studying? Nope. I'm comfortable studying, whether TV is on/off or people talk at the library.
I'm a senior in high school. I have not had TV for several years. I haven't missed it one bit. There's nothing but a bunch of bullshit on TV today anyway.
I don't watch TV. Not because I made a decision I just don't. I don't have cable. And I didn't want to pay 50 bucks for that dumb box so I could watch TV for an hour(maybe) a week. I do own a TV and play video games, If there are any TV shows I do like I buy just the seasons. That way I can watch them on my time without commercials.
The problem is is that TV can often become a routine (ie at 6pm, you must was X), and quickly you have 10-12 hours of TV you have to watch to keep up with the series. That is a major problem.
If you watch them online or using something like TiVo you can watch them whenever you have free time or want to take a break from study.
Sorry, but completely disagree with TYT here. TV is nothing but mindless shit nowadays, and I don't need it to keep my sanity. In fact, I start to lose my sanity if I try to watch an insipid reality show for more than 2 minutes. Most of the shows I watch online can't even be found on television, so sorry Jayar, but it aint the same thing. In general, TV is just obsolete. Video games, YouTube, Netflix--all of it is far more worth your time.
Who watches TV anymore... video games, youtube videos, books, music... TV is obsolete unless you're watching sports, you can just torrent your favorite series.
Ana it doesnt keep you sane, it keeps you empty. Do something, be with a loved one.. do ..freakin something, mindless garbage is not happyness.... huh.. americans
It all goes back to self control. I don't really watch TV as much as I used to when I was younger but I watch it here and there (i.e. VH1, MTV, WWE RAW on occasions). But the internet is no different. You have FB, twitter, "mindless articles", forums, YouTube, HULU, Dailymotion, etc. So let's not sit here and act like you're being that much more productive by not watching TV.
Honestly I like TV better than my computer. I would go back to renting movies at the video store every Friday night, and watching TV and checking the TV guide channel in a heartbeat. People get way into their own worlds with computers, there's so much weird shit out there. I think it's better when we all connect through one thing like the TV and don't have like 8 billion weird ass things to watch on the internet.
TV is great. I love TV shows, there's a lot of quality stuff out there. I would be pretty sad if TV went away. I was watching PBS the other day and randomly saw this awesome thing about Billy "The Kid." I mean I never would've stumbled upon that otherwise.
Wow, people are really not into watching tv or watch so little of it. Perhaps because i'm a bit a recluse, i'm a tv connoisseur, not trying to sound poncy but i love tv, so many great memories of sitting watching my favourite shows from primary and high school, and into my uni years. Unlike the average coach potato, i'm a active engaged viewer, i always come away with something i watch, or just chilling out. Don't just sit being a passive viewer, enrich your tv viewing.
That happened to me. I did not need if after that year. I from now do not. I just watch youtube. I mostly watch it for the news. I just go online and read articles.
People who still have televisions and cable/satellite are like people who still have land line phones. Invest in a nice monitor instead.
No matter how many channels you can get via television, the internet just destroys them in terms of unpirated, quality content on demand at a more reasonable price.
I haven't watched _TV_ for 6 or 7 years now i think (other than when visiting people who do).
I consume all content on my computer, which frankly has a better screen that almost all televisions (27", 2560x1440, H-IPS (UltraSharp )). I do watch series and films, but i do so on my schedule, and often multi-task it with eating, or while some rendering or compiling is going on ine the background.
I've also become almost intolerant of ads and commercials since i use ad-block, flash-block, no-script.
listen up. i was home-schooled until 7th grade and i had some of the best grade's in school AND i never sat down and learned or did anything like that for those home-schooled year's and i watched T.V. for all that learning. so the point is that is matter's what you watch like discovery, history, military, and channel's like that. so do not hate on television so much
The only channels I watch on TV are The Food Network, ABC (mainly I watch Shark Tank and Modern Family), and Nicktoons. However these are all on rare occasions.
As a college student, I only watch 2 TV series (online) & the rest of the stuff I watch is TYT/YouTube related...which is also online. I can definitely live without a physical television.
TV isn't relevant to me anymore I just spent 2 hours watching YouTube and listening to podcasts, granted they were educational things (NASA, Science Journals...ect) but I really should have just studied. I did get rid of my TV like 6 months ago too but really I found I just adopted new forms of media, but at least it isn't garbage trash (Jersey Shore or whatever is popular in main stream now) Its now mostly YouTube shows, Netflix Documentaries, and iTunes U content...guess I'm boring?
I use TV as background noise when I'm working in the other room. I simply cannot stand pure silence when I studying. Putting on the news at low volume is enough :P
@Rametesaima For the sake of saving energy and likely increasing the quality of the data that's reaching your ears, perhaps you should invest in internet radio/music/radio whatever.
Still have mine for school but I mostly use it for videogames & netflix. Most of the shows I watch are on when I have class so I end up watching them on hulu later.
I watch TV maybe an hour or two per day now, just to catch the news. I mean, the only show that I watch aside from the news is House and I come online to watch TYT everyday, but I definitely don't watch as much as I used to. And that'll probably be cut down in the Fall, when I write my senior thesis. I agree with Ana on this. You should try to balance it. But if you have a lot of work (for classes or otherwise), I think watching an hour of mindless TV makes sense. You'd go a bit crazy otherwise.
LOL who the fuck actually watches TV anymore... so many garbage programs on now. Plus, what's the point when you can just filter through the garbage time filler programs by watching online?
@69NAWAR69 Clearly, you didn't even watch the clip - Jayar's point was that watching shows online is the same.. it's a senseless distinction to say you're not watching TV when you are watching the same programming on the internet.
@aamesxdavid When I watch online, I'm watching my favorite series. When I watch TV, I'm watching some time filler bullshit while waiting for my favorite series... No point in buying a TV anymore unless you wanna play 360 or PS3.
@69NAWAR69 I do cause its a pain to watch tv on a 24 in monitor and even worse tryign to get your huge heavy gaming rig moved close enough to the 50 inch tv to get the hdmi cable to reach. Then there is the constant threat of going over your bandwidth by wtchin all your shows on line. So I still watch tv and most people with a shred of common sense still do.
Also I watch TV 24/7 I currently have the TV on with Dog the Bounty Hunter while on the Internet, but it is on ESPN most of the time. TV is everywhere including school, work, anywhere besides the kitchen where you eat, clubs that play music videos, my car, and gym. The only places I go that do not have TVs on is my kitchen, parties, classes, library (where I rarely go), some gas stations, and when I run outside.
I spent years watching TV shows like NOVA on PBS for self enlightenment... I also spend years taking classes at community colleges for self enlightenment... neither of these activities was a waste of my time... and I did a heck of a lot more than "take away a couple of throw-away facts." As a whole, it enriched me greatly as a person and I feel I learned a lot more than most other activities.
I am sure if some or most girls got rid of Facebook, Twitter, and TV that would account for more time than all school work put together.
PS By the way some girls update you can tell they are on Facebook 24/7 with their IPhones or smartphones. I would say this is at least 20% of girls in college (1 in 5). Then you have college girls who use it for more than two hours a day I would put it at least at 50%.
BUT IS THIS REALLY REALISTIC TO GET RID OF FACEBOOK OR TV.
I tried watching TV while stoned with a friend for the first time in a LONG while a few weeks ago...I swear it was almost ALL advertisements...It was fucking bull shit. Now that the internet is widely accessible, TV is for country bumpkins and lazy fucks
@tarnishedmercury Who actually sits down and watches TV without a TIVO/Recorder besides sports? If I need to watch a show that goes on that day I can sit down anytime after 8 PM if on cable because HD stations work runs on Eastern Time Zone while I am in a Pacific Time Zone so I "get the show" 3 hours early. If on network I will wait till 11 PM to watch it back.
@tarnishedmercury Holy shit! That's ridiculous. No need for that shit at all. Especially when it's the same damn commercials over and over again. No thanks, I'm adept enough to use a computer.
No real point in watching TV since i can get all the stuff that i want from TV like news and shows online or on bluray without watching hours of fucking commercials.
Seriously, having to sit through like a 10 minute commercial break which they always put in at vital plot points ruins the show for me.
I think the current model of TV will die out within a few decades.
I stopped watching TV in the middle of high school when I started to have a lot of homework. It isn't the best thing that's ever happened to me, but I'm glad I don't watch so much TV. But I do spend a shitload of time on the internet.
Then you have girls who use it for more than two hours I would put it at least at 50%.
BUT IS THIS REALLY REALISTIC TO GET RID OF FACEBOOK OR TV.
I don't watch tv. But that's mostly because I was bored of the content. Some television shows are good but I prefer to watch it online since I have the ability to watch whenever it is convenient.
I stopped watching TV years ago. Its great. I can download a show and watch it whenever I want. Theres only three showsinthepast 5 years that I've actually followed. Its awesome :)
Everyone procrastinates to a certain extend whether it's through television or computer related activities. It doesn't matter about the medium, it's whether you can restrain yourself from over indulging mindless entertainment. If you can balance your schedule with your favorite show then go again.
However, I am personally against video games as they are far worst than shows. Videos games are designed to be a 2nd girlfriend as they are so time consuming in comparison to shows.
I don't think its as much the programs on the tv (although i'm sure we could argue against that too) but i think the worst part is all the commercials/propaganda!
Jayar is a dumbass, as usual. You forget the elements that make a computer much better than Television..hmmm perhaps Interactivity? The fact that you can produce things? The lack of advertisements ? TV is a disaster for most viewers. I never meet any TV watchers who can watch one or two programs then turn it off. It's always channel surfing and gawking for HOURS. ALWAYS.
@SeriouslyPissedOff as opposed to those who site on facebook or youtube for hours... I mean come on its facebook, your friends aren't that interesting.
I get what your saying but its all about self control and most people don't have it.
@JamesAColemanFan You're right, most don't. Hardly any have any self-control worth mentioning. Me included. But I'd say Facebook is a hell of a lot more productive to someone's well being than television in almost every case. Your TV can't build relationships and get you sexed. Facebook at the very least has the possibility of doing that. And I'd argue that any situation where you're using an interface for extremely long amounts of time owns the experience of watching a TV lazily.
@SeriouslyPissedOff I'm not all the really into social networking, seems so much effort to just see what people in all different places are doing and talking about what they're doing and posting up pictures of what they're doing. I have a facebook page, but hardly anyone comments on it or checks up on me, not much incentive to build relationships and get sexed. Maybe because i'm kind of a recluse but i enjoy watching quality tv online rather than posting updates on my day.
ana u do learn something watching tv and yes it is barely anything depending on what ur watching and i havent just sat down to watch tv in a long long time i have always been on the internet its the new tv
The difference between TV and hulu/streaming is that on hulu, you go watch what you really want to watch. When you sit down in front of the TV, you're very likely to end up watching something you don't even find interesting.
I barely even watched TV. I was usually online, esp. on YT and Facebook. Still don't watch much TV now, esp. with the bullshit digital transition that requires you to get a stupid-ass converter box.
i think people should be banned to watch tv... and i think people should get the death penalti if they dont think the way i think... and i would abolish freedom of speech and expresion... and i would have a dictator fascist who would control everyone... oh wait most of the things i said exists at this moment in america.. my bad!!
TV has a flicker rate that puts you into a hypnotic state so the ads will have more effect. Your brain will operate better without. That's why you can't concentrate when watching TV.
TV dies when Youtube entered my life. TV is only good for sports and pro wrestling, because it's a bigger screen. And of course Adult Swim at night, besides that I haven't watched TV in years.
It should be obvious that the problem is not the TV, nor the Internet, but what you do with that time, and how much time you spend. People waste time watching all sorts of garbage, for hours. Sure, it's nice to have a little lightweight entertainment from time to time, but for millions of people, that's ALL they watch. Just look how dumb they come off in their online posts. They couldn't think deeply or rationalize their thoughts to save their lives. There's more to TV than "reality TV."
for me its the internet not the tv. ever since the internet i don't watch tv anymore. i get shows and movies from torrent. watch youtube, play games, play ipod, use facebook.
I haven't watched TV in years! I watch TYT instead! If only Cablevision got Current...I'd watch TV again... :(

@69NAWAR69 Clearly, you didn't even watch the clip - Jayar's point was that watching shows online is the same.. it's a senseless distinction to say you're not watching TV when you are watching the same programming on the internet.
aamesxdavid 1 month ago 3
@aamesxdavid When I watch online, I'm watching my favorite series. When I watch TV, I'm watching some time filler bullshit while waiting for my favorite series... No point in buying a TV anymore unless you wanna play 360 or PS3.
69NAWAR69 1 month ago

4 minutes of commercials for every 8 minutes of TV shows.
I timed it over the winter break
tarnishedmercury 1 month ago 2
@tarnishedmercury Who actually sits down and watches TV without a TIVO/Recorder besides sports? If I need to watch a show that goes on that day I can sit down anytime after 8 PM if on cable because HD stations work runs on Eastern Time Zone while I am in a Pacific Time Zone so I "get the show" 3 hours early. If on network I will wait till 11 PM to watch it back.
Stamps600 1 month ago

I don't watch tv. But that's mostly because I was bored of the content. Some television shows are good but I prefer to watch it online since I have the ability to watch whenever it is convenient.

ALWAYS.
SeriouslyPissedOff 1 month ago
@SeriouslyPissedOff as opposed to those who site on facebook or youtube for hours... I mean come on its facebook, your friends aren't that interesting.
I get what your saying but its all about self control and most people don't have it.
JamesAColemanFan 1 month ago
@JamesAColemanFan You're right, most don't. Hardly any have any self-control worth mentioning. Me included. But I'd say Facebook is a hell of a lot more productive to someone's well being than television in almost every case. Your TV can't build relationships and get you sexed. Facebook at the very least has the possibility of doing that. And I'd argue that any situation where you're using an interface for extremely long amounts of time owns the experience of watching a TV lazily.
SeriouslyPissedOff 1 month ago
@SeriouslyPissedOff I'm not all the really into social networking, seems so much effort to just see what people in all different places are doing and talking about what they're doing and posting up pictures of what they're doing. I have a facebook page, but hardly anyone comments on it or checks up on me, not much incentive to build relationships and get sexed. Maybe because i'm kind of a recluse but i enjoy watching quality tv online rather than posting updates on my day.
