I agree. Bolton had (and still has) a phenomenal voice--also quite an impressive falsetto. Still, next to Ray Charles he comes across as theatrical. Ray was one of Soul's architects, and his mastery of the idiom is never more readily apparent than when juxtaposed with a younger artist trying to emulate the feeling. Somewhat akin to Celine Dion and Aretha Franklin at the Divas Live! performance of 1998. Celine was extravagant, but Aretha sang circles around her.

That...and Bolton actually sucks. He takes timeless classics and turns them into a hernia. He sounds as though he's straining when he sings and not in any sort of soulful way. Just like he's being stabbed every time he hits a high note, it's actually quite funny. He's not even on the same planet as Ray. You can hear soul and the blues in every word Ray sings and that's why people listened to him for about half a century. The most Bolton is remembered for now is being an "ass-clown".
