I think in a staged performance this would be wonderful, but in a chamber concert setting I would almost feel vulgar for spying on such emotion! Haha. Luckily it's a recording, so I can just enjoy it.
For me Emma Kirkby's gentle voice and the lower tempo of that version is much more beautiful. This sopran is so "brutal" . ' could rather imagine it a ""harder"" piece.
@civileso I love, truly love, the description given by Natalie of the Lamento della Ninfa in that promotional video. I must have listened to/watched it thirty times. What an actress!!!
Vero, qualche forzatura stilstica.
I am not into singing that much and no conaisseur but the vibrato voice is destroying one of the most beautiful pieces ever composed. Can't this be forbidden someway for stuff before 1750?
That's why we have invented legislation for didn't we?
I think the version of Emma Kirkby or La Fenice if they are onboard of YouTube. For the way of singing (no vibrato please!) Lamento della Ninfa - Amor - Claudio Monteverdi by the Savall family will do fine. Anything will be better than this singing saw
She is an amazing soprano but maybe madrigal is not really her thing,I really liked her Tecum Pricipum from Handel's Dixit Dominus probably my favorite one besides the Annick Massis one
hehe I like the analogy lol... somehow true... Dessay's voice remains better suited for Romantic music than for Baroque music... but some of her Baroque interpretations are very touching, such as this one, and Handel's Delirio Amoroso...
I was thinking about it and I agree with thebarroque that baroque music fits natalie very well but in this work specially in some specific places she doesnt sound so beatifull as useall. for example I didnt like the part when she singns: taci,taci...
anyway this piece is so beatifull. the male voices is simply divine!
Completely agree with you this time! Unlike last time...I believe we argued about Bartoli vs. Dessay in "Un pensiero nemico di pace" The "taci taci" part actually made me jump, it was so startling and almost ugly! But she brings the Romantic passion into this madrigal but she just overdoes it some times. The male voices are amazing! The faster part in the beginning is to die for, ethereal blending of syllables...I guess Monteverdi's mastery is part of it too.
you were the one that said that natalie sing "Un pensiero nemico di pace" better then baratoli? I really dont remember.
well at least we agree about this one... : )
however, I totelly love dessay in the baroque music... like thebarroque wrote that natalie really "shines". I dont know what happend to her in this piece.
Yep that's me! :) I'm a HUGE HUGE HUGE Dessay fan, but obviously not a deaf one. I agree that she's amazing in Baroque music! When she doesn't do vibrato (not a vocalist so I don't what that is...) it's just divine sometimes. Here she's just...god, I don't know? Sounding like being impaled at some parts? I imagine she was flailing all about like crazy when she was singing this....
About the flailing, you're right. Haven't you seen the pre-release clip for this CD? Have a look on Mehdi's page; she's on the first of the three. (Now that you mention it, "impaled" isn't far off base, either!)
is that stuff at the bottom figured bass?

OK, it is more romantic than monteverdian but still... I like it.

ma il vibrato è in stile?

not quite as good as Emma Kirkby, and I prefer it much slower as Kirkby did, but this one is nice.

Very nice and poignant. Reminds me of Dido's Lament

Che meraviglia. Monteverdi è struggente e magico. Poi cantato in maniera eccellente dalla Dessay è Paradiso sceso in terra!!!

Yes, it is from the promotional documentary of the album "Lamenti". You can see the video on YouTube. MehdiCaps posted the whole documentary.

Yes, you are not into singing that much, you never read any treatise written in the time of Monteverdi and you're no conNaisseur.
NedRorem 2 years ago
You don't have to repeat what I already said myself. I'm glad that at least one person can listen to this voice all the way through.

Nou... :-/
laurabarocca 2 years ago

Liszt31 1 year ago

do you want this by Rene Jacobs with Maria Christina Kiehr as Amore?
margotlorena 3 years ago
Hehe, sure! I have about 15-20 versions of this and I can't believe Jacobs is not one of them!
civileso 3 years ago
where should I send it then? I cant remember which email account you were using
margotlorena 3 years ago
they are playing it one tone higher than the score and the other versions you posted, don't they ?
cuicuimusic 3 years ago
A semitone, I'd say. The others are performed at modern pitch. There will be more, but only in a few days (Eser is too busy right now).

i just love dessay... beautiful madrigal
conejamusical 3 years ago
lovely madrigal, but I didn't like her very much, what's with the scooping !?!
margotlorena 3 years ago
Yeah... she's not a Baroque specialist... so, as MehdiCaps expressed very nicely, her Baroque singing is very impregnated with Romantic technique.
daniel0azar 3 years ago
I agree, but the male voices are great...Dessay good in baroque but she really not "shines" in this repertoire as she does in other works.
Thanks for posting! Is wonderful to hear new recordings of this beautiful works

I don't mean it critically, by the way. Whatever it takes. I'd stand on my head to be able to sing like that. :)

I saw the vid just now! Thanks for letting me know, it's awesome! I think I'm going to by a copy.
