I do not understand the fascinating with growing "in pots", less, of course, you haven't any ground to work with, such as, an apartment. Oh, I guest living in an rental place of some sort would be another reason..
Are people like this, "overly citified", is that it?
Where I live in south Florida it's either raised beds or pots. First reason is I use weed and feed fertilizer/weed killer on my lawn so I don't want to eat that crap. Second reason is when you dig or should I say try to dig in my back yard you instantly hit coral rock and if you can bust through that it turns to white sand, not very productive for growing vegetables. Let me add that there are some areas very near me that are great for growing in the ground. My area is just not one of them.
O'k., thanks, I missed some reasons, severe ground problems has never been a problem for me, so it escaped my mind. There is another simple reason folks might do the pot thing, animals, some people don't want 'em peeing on or near the crops. Thanks, good answer, my flaw.
I have actually thought of painting my pots white cause it gets hot even in the winter growing season down here in south Florida. Yeah, if you could find black bags it probably couldn't hurt to use them.
Are all of these plants in individual containers. If so, do they reach their full potential in these pots? Where did you get so many pots? I have limited space for planting but have lots of places I could place pots. I am amazed at all your plants.
Sorry I didn't reply sooner as my you-tube email comment notification is messed up. Yes, one plant per container and the plants do fine. I came across a nursery that was going out of business and got the majority of my containers for next to nothing. Thanx for lookin'.
I'm not sure what they are made out of but they fell apart at the end of the growing season. I'm going to try Home Depot bags this season because they seem to be made out of nylon and appear stronger. Not sure about the Walmart bags because I've never seen them.
Yeah, south Florida is known to be quite warm. My growing season has ended and I won't start up again until November. Thanx for stoppin' by and be sure to check out my other videos.
Were any of your eggplants the "Black Beauty" variety? If so I wanted to ask how many fruits the plant produces at a time. I'm trying to figure out how many plants I will need to get. Thanks!
Depends on how much eggplant you wanna eat..LOL. Two of mine are black beauty and two are green eggplant. They don't get huge like the kind in the store but I would say about a dozen are on the plant at any given time. I slice mine about a half inch thick, salt and pepper'em, spray them with Pam and throw'em on the grill. Cook like you would a hamburger. When they're done peel the skin off and enjoy.
Thanks for the response! Once you pick a few eggplants do more grow in their place? Or do they produce just one bunch like a Determinate Tomato plant? I'm going to buy a few more plants this weekend. I only have 2 right now. Thanks for the help!
Well, 'Black Beauty' is known for being beautiful, but not prolific. In general, the oblong eggplants take longer to mature than the long, thin varieties and they yield less in a season. Yes, more do grow in but I rip all my plant up at the end of my growing season (south Florida) cause it gets too hot to grow stuff. Not quite sure on the lifespan of a eggplant bush.
Thanks a lot for the answers. It will really help in my decision to now get probably 3 more eggplants. I hadn't seen to many other folks with veggie gardens that had eggplants in them.
how did you get the plant in the bag without falling out once you cut the hole int to place the plant. Your garden looks fantastic and I cant wiat to start.. thanks
Cut a 2 inch by 2 inch slit in the bottom of the bag, lay bag on its side, fill half way with potting soil, place a 6 inch tomato plant through slit in bag, hang bag on hook, and fill the rest of the bag with the desired amount of soil.
this is my first year to garden.. EVER! I have never had a garden or a backyard of my own before. I'm think I am a closet gardener. I am so excited for this it's crazy. My friends think I'm nuts. (we are in early and late 20, not the "gardening years" LOL). I am going to fav this vid for ideas. I have no idea what to plant. I live in Zone 3, or so I've been told, So it gets cold here early. I'm even composting already, when i moved in there was a composter!! It was like christmas when I saw it!
I envy your garden, I am trying my hand at an herb garden, and a few tomatoes from seeds, do you have any suggestions that might help my garden thrive?..I live in the Atalnta area....Oh yeah, I also would like to grow some lettuce, and greens, which is easiest for a beginner?
Wow I notice you plant only in containers...I'm amazed that its all container plants and no garden ground planting..... I guess you don't worry or do a lot of weeding... can you explain?
No weeds, no bugs. I live in South Florida and in my area there's nothing but coral rock and sand when you try to dig just a few inches into the ground. Plus who knows what kind of pesticides and toxins there are in that mix. I get a load of garden mix dumped into my pick-up truck at a local nursery for about fifty bucks and fill up all my containers. At the end of the growing season I dump it on my yard and spread it out and start fresh next season. Been doing it for years.
Thanks for the reply Bullseye... I live in PA and our soul is ok... I add to it but I don't enjoy picking weeds and keeping bugs off the plants. Seems like you have that licked with your system.. Do you use any pesticides or have trouble with bugs? I don't use any on my garden cause we are eatting from it...just wondering what you do since your plants look so healthy and bug free... thanks again...Mark
I don't think a 2 liter bottle would be big enough but it couldn't hurt to try. I'm gonna try to post a video today or tomorrow because one of my homemade tomato plant hangers came crashing down yesterday as I was watering it. It seems that the material has begun to rot much to my surprise.
Thanks for video, I found you from a link on a hanging tomato site. I wanted to make my own. I am 38 and have gardened all my life. (parents from KY) Wanted to make my own hangers instead of paying $20 a piece. My yard isn't big enough for a garden. Do you think a 2 liter bottle is big enough for tomatoes? I will use them for herbs but wondered about tomatoes, I know the roots need room.
Nice garden mate

Celebrity tomatoes. But I will probably do Better Boy and Roma's next season.

I used some black 5 gallon buckets, they're growing like crazy.

All I use is Osmocote Multi-Purpose Plant Food. You can get it at Home Depot. For me, collard greens are the easiest to grow. Good luck.
