If you want to talk about white man's burden then travel to any hospital in Africa. It's white folks treating blacks and they still want to kill us. Like I said, anyone I go I am barely tolerated because I offer indispensable service.
You obviously haven't been here (South Africa). White people are treated very differently...for good or bad...it's just that the impression they left here are very negative. I'm white (British) so I am barely tolerated unlike the boers.
This guy obviously has a inflated opinion of himself as a world traveler. Look at that way he is posing for the camera and his very pronounced way of speaking. I sure wouldn't want him to represent me at a world culture conference.
The savage look and manner stemmed from the sense of superiority and the hubris of despising culture of the rest.
The whites do not usually wear this seamy side of their face when dealing with each other. Perhaps, the book " Black Like Me" by John Howard Griffin could help them to detect this dark & seamy side of their faces...
It takes a lot of courage to tell the truth...Thank you!

Everybody is intimidated by white people. White people are dangerous. Whites aren't very harmful to each other for some reason, but to others...Whites have very....interesting ways of harming others.
"The white mans burden". this term refers to the archaic view held by many whites towards non-Christian peoples. they said it because they felt other peoples were less advanced and needed "Christian Guidance"! (the main theme of the old slave owning "last generation" of the American south east, and of the Mainfest Destiny psychosis,>>>(Is our god given right to claim The Promised Land!), that led to the suppression of natives).
Thank you for putting it into perspective something that almost never gets talked about.
I am S. Asian, and I can concur that what have analyzed is very accurate. What other people (caucasian), may consider as right of passage, i.e. acting rough & tough as normal male behavior, is perceived as arrogant and racist by almost the whole world.
Now many (in US) may say who give a F*** about other cultures, but it matters alot. Specially now a days.
Quite. It's odd that Northern Europeans seem to see themselves as gentle, pacific and civilized, while they are seen in a rather different light by others.
@redfordrn ............from my studies of my own ethnic group, i can truthfully say, with total accuracy!, that many, many, many white folks is crazy! beyond primitive! uncultured! woefully uneducated! savage! brutal! arrogant! avaricious! i will not cover my race in a glossy facade of lies. we've been very, very bad.
I've lived in Japan, and I've been to China too. I'm not taller LOL
What I've found especially in Japan, since I speak Japanese, is that the Japanese tend to think of european/american people as uncivilised, unbathed and of a lower intelligence. They assumed I couldn't understand them (since Japanese is too difficult for foreigners to learn), so they spoke freely about me, while I was right there... Makes you think differently about how you yourself see foreigners...
It is a peculiarity of English-speaking people that we don't really believe that it is possible for a human being not to speak or understand English, but we are not alone in this. Latin Americans and Chinese seem to be this way as well. Not speaking the lingo=stupidity, or at least lower intelligence. Translation is facilitated by speaking louder or more impatiently.
"I could spend my whole life having this conversation. Please try to understand before one of us dies!"
This really is your best video so far. As someone who is also from Manitoba but has spent many years living in Hong Kong and has friends in 50+ countries, I can tell you that you are exactly right on everything you have said. Thanks for making this one.
Thanks! A lovely place, Hong Kong. Must be a bit of an adjustment for a Manitoban, used to as much space as one likes :-)
I'm headed that way this fall, hopefully en route to Indonesia. Speaking of 'reserved Asians', one hears that showing strong emotions in Java is probably more of a no-no there than anywhere else. We shall see.
Wow, this was totally not what I was expecting from this video. Again, another great analysis ;) There are definitely always exceptions to the rule... so you can't generalize here.
I "pimped" you out in my latest videos... So I am definitely hoping some of my subs come over here. I think some might enjoy your very open way of looking at the world.
Thanks! And yes, one ought never to generalize. It is, however, interesting to learn what generalizations are made about one's own culture.
(and when I referred to shaven, tatooed "yobs", I think you know the type I am referring to, and even them I wasn't trying to anyone diss per se ... but these people are *truly* intimidating to non-white people ... heh heh)
LOL, trust me, I get looked at funny by other white people for having a shaved head and tattoos. I also have blue eyes... oh no!!! I've had a lot of people think I am a Nazi skinhead. Bugs me a lot, since I am so far on the opposite of that. I really dislike the whole, "judging a book by it's cover".
I think we share a similar love of putting ourselves in others' shoes so to speak? It's an interesting way of viewing the world ;)
I like to see things this way. The world is crazy and contradictory, and there's too much to get angry about. Trying to see the other side of the argument is a way in which I try to stay (relatively) sane and un-furious :-)
[Continued] But as I'm coming to expect of you, this was a great video. It was something I'd mused about but never seriously considered, and may well be worth it. -Max
Why thanks. There are, however, generalizations even among Asians (and Latin Americans). The Koreans, for example, are often stereotyped by Southeast Asians for their aggressive and arrogant (and drunken) behaviour, even though I have never personally encountered any such conduct on the part of Koreans.
And you are right in terms of the aggressive mien of "the White Man". It too has few equivallents in most non-European cultures, even though it is widely misinterpreted.
I wonder if not observing this behavior is a mater of scale. My scale of what is offensive drunken behavior is pretty high. You have to really do something obnoxious before I even notice it. Perhaps what they see as aggressive, arrogant, and drunken behavior is scaled differently enough that we don't easily recognize it as such. Just a thought. -Max
Possibly. There are plenty of drunks in all cultures, and what people do when under the influence can vary in terms of "acceptibility" from culture to culture - and from person to person. Like you, I am certainly not scandalized by shenanigans either :-)
In my experience in Japan; The Japanese are certainly able to get violent while drunk, though it was a different kind of violent, more intent on harm than what I've experienced in the US. It was also very very uncommon. I tend to be naturally intimidating due to how I grew up. I am always in an aggressive stance and in a position where I can defend myself. That didn't win my any friends while I was there. Actually it made people down right afraid of me. Works almost the opposite here though.
I've seen quite a few Jackie Chan movies, so don't pull that peaceful asia stuff on me... ;)
To be serious though, great video as always. I think people best rid the stereotyping on such grand scales as those who are men, women, living at this and that place as you see more of the world and get to know more people. You'll always find more exceptions to the rules and labels in your world view then and are forced to change your opinion.
Heh heh ... as I said, I wasn't talking about reality. I was referring to stereotypes. But having said that, I've seen some lovely shouting matches in Shanghai, complete with fists pounded on tables and red-faced fury. This doesn't stop the Chinese from thinking white people are aggressive and/or intimidating. The shaven-headed, tatooed "yob" seems to have no equivallent in China, not that that's the kind of Westerner the Chinese are likely to encounter in the flesh ;-)
And an anglo may become violent when yelling, whereas the Greek or Arab or Italian is almost certainly just blowing hot air if tempers flare and voices are raised.
