I just couldn't keep watching after the half-way point. My heart rate and blood pressure must be through the roof right now. This is horrible. These people need to be banned from driving for life. A 3,000lb vehicle is a deadly weapon and some people obviously cannot be trusted to use it properly. These people need to be taught a life-long lesson in the fact that driving is a privilege, not a right.
I've run one red light. Wasn't texting, talking, anything. Just didn't know the light was there, and I was tired. Thankfully I stopped enough not to hit anyone.
This is the reason why the government wants to ban driving while talking on your cell phone, blue tooth, speaker, texting drinking eating etc . Ppl complain that the government is making our lives difficult. Tell that to the person who ram your car how difficult your life gonna be 4 u
Why DO people run red lights? I mean they are there to prevent stuff like this from happening, and it's like these people have never heard of traffic cameras before.
People are so mindless and selfish. They have no regard for anyone's life including their own, and somehow their carelessness is brought upon random people like it's no one's business. This is a reflection of the American society as a whole.
do americans think that red lights are fucking optional or something?!?!?!?!?! I really dont understand what these people are doing...........not a clue
Steamed driver passes a red light. But the run up to the cops! Sergeant came up to him. - Documents - Nope, - Rights - Nope, - breath. - Im drunk! - Right now, I'll call the captain, though he is with you solve the problem, you got a man! Captain-law, man-please captain documents, man-please, Captain breath, man, please! Captain at a loss: - A sergeant told me human, you're drunk and no papers! - So right now he still raciest that I rode the red!
@ammieliesus It actually looks as though he landed in one of the best ways possible under the circumstances, sliding along the car's roof, windscreen, and hood before touching the concrete. While I'm sure there were several broken bones involved and maybe some neck damage when he ultimately slammed into the road, he is still a very (un)lucky man.
Hey guys, we also ran a video of drivers running red lights on Des Plaines Patch provided by the Des Plaines Police Department. If you're interested please take a look. Cheers.
where i am from our traffic light work on timing, i was learning to drive, so i was driving along, and as soon as i was infront almost under the street light, it changed to orange and then to red just as fast. so i drove straight through, my reason was that if i mashed on the brakes to stop, i might of gotten rare end. so was i wrong? and there was not vehicles on the left that the red light wanted me to stop for. so was i wrong?
@hopkin104 It's not that big of a deal, I blow through yellow lights in situations like that all the time. Although generally its a good idea to slow down about 5mph when you get close to a light in case it does turn yellow, Otherwise you may end up like some of the unfortunate ppl in this video. I've had 2 cars totaled by ppl running red lights in the past, and its a giant load of rotten horse shit. Just remember to make up for other peoples shitty driving by driving better yourself.
@1MtnBoy No, I don't want cops riding shotgun, but I DO think that there needs to be change on our roads at stop lights. Why is it that when road work is done on many roads, they look completely different than they did originally? It's because the previous design was old and the required specs for new construction are different (such as length of turn lanes, etc). If everything was great, then why is there need for change? There are very few of these that are obviously just disregardig the light
... accidents and fatalities. When you add to that antiquated and poorly designed intersections, the chance for bad accidents and death are even higher. I have (and will) admit that there are issues with distracted drivers... but if that's the cause of the problem, then why aren't there red light runners at high frequencies (that necessitate red light cameras) at every intersection?
.. not the best option for where two roads cross... there are too many potential tangents, which cause the most catastrophic accidents. A roundabout forces everyone to slow down driving it because there isn't an option to fly right through... you have to drive around the perimeter of the circle. Accidents that happen on roundabouts are simple fender benders and very low frequency of fatalities from accidents. The same can't be said for accidents at stop lights. Those regularly cause very bad...
@1MtnBoy There clearly are issues at these intersections, as proven by the fact that there ARE red light cameras there. There would be no need if there wasn't an issue at the intersection. The majority of people who drive through the poorly designed and antiquated roads are probably locals and know what to expect. I'm talking about the bad drivers who, regardless if they're locals or not haven't learned what to expect @ the intersection and put others in danger. The fact is that stoplights are..
@ 3:40 Idiotic mini-van driving soccer mom tried doing that same thing to me today. While there was no cop to catch her, she timed the light poorly, and had to get in behind me. I made it a point to drive extra slooooowwwwww...
I am curious as to the excuses given in these. Do people claim they just didn't see the light or are they just so selfish to other road users? We don't get quite so many of this type of crash in the UK as there are nowhere near as many intersections like tho ones in the videos. Not by design but more because british roads have evolved from over thousands of years rather than being planned.
@1mtnboy I routinely drive on roads in Wisconsin that have been reengineered to modern standards and are GREAT to drive on. I also have driven on many roads in the Chicagoland area that are 50+ year old design (and falling apart to boot) and are antiquated. They haven't been updated since before even you were born! And don't tell me about DOT mandates. I'm in Illinois. The DOT does what the political machine wants it to and that's it.
if there is a problem ? it gets fixed !!! DOT has mandated / approved roadway and intersection layouts for decades in almost every city & county to prevent sue-happy drivers from cleaning out city or state coffers over a "dubious" section of road/intersection deemed dangerous. it just simply isnt true. you cannot blame the roads. layout and signs are intuitive and so dead dumb simple a child could understand. even my korean co-workers drive here no with no problems.
@1MtnBoy Do you realize the difference between 3 and 5 seconds when you're going 50 miles per hour? It's over 146 feet. And it certainly varies from community to community. Chicago is on the low end of the 3 second scale... if it's 3 seconds at all. An increased yellow has been proven to drastically decrease accidents... but cities don't increase their yellow time, they put in red light tickets, which are cash cows and don't help safety one iota. Many times, the accidents increase.
@PointSpecial09 50 mph=73fps that gives you 13 seconds to stop !!! .intersections in the city are designed to be visible over 1000ft away !! if you cant stop in 1k ft ??? your going alot more than 50mph !!! thats why municipalities & DOT chose it. Giving you more than enough time. Yes they do.! Loma Linda,CA just bumped up the yellow time rather than remove the CCTC's. accidents continue because drivers refuse to slow down.or they panic stop in heavy traffic. CCTC cant change human nature.
@1MtnBoy No, that gives you two seconds to stop. The definition of "feet per second" is the number of feet in a second. 73 fps means that you go the full 73 feet in 1 second, not 13.
That doesn't add the stopping distance and time, which varies by vehicle, or the reaction time of individuals, which widely varies. And yes, distracted drivers will have far worse reaction times, but again, shouldn't our roads be designed with the poorest drivers in mind?
@PointSpecial09 1000 ft in 13 seconds is what I said. yes 2 seconds is 146 ft. DOT doesnt generally lay out roadways that give drivers only 2 seconds to react. and they are laid out as simple as possible ( you dont even have to speak english to understand most signage). thats why the 1k ft mark is cited so often as a general baseline. if thats not prudent then you will usually see signage / flashing lights etc. I agree I would extend yellows too but not too much or drivers will exploit that too
@1MtnBoy A study was completed in 1982 concerning human reaction time. The mean reaction time found was 1.62 seconds with a standard deviation of 1.26 seconds. This clearly can't be a bell-shaped curve, because one cannot have an instantaneous or negative reaction time.... so the curve will have a right-skew extending out many seconds away. With a bell-shaped curve, about 95% of the distribution is within 2 standard deviations, but with right-skewed, most will be closer to the mean, but some..
(cont'd) will be beyond two standard deviations... which will be upwards of 4 seconds. With a 3 second yellow light, it carries the vehicle into the intersection before the break is even applied, and again, this is assuming that there are no other distractions. The vehicle still needs to have time to break, which takes more time and distance and can vary drastically among cars.
Look, I think that people should stop for red lights. But I think that there are more factors than people think about.
@PointSpecial09 your correct. it is not bell shaped. one of the biggest reasons is that we dont have the same reaction time every time at every opportunity, we are humans not machines. data has to have a variable for that.
@1MtnBoy Right, but my argument all along has been that roads need to be designed for those people who are poor drivers/have slow reaction times. I don't see much evidence that problem intersections are being redesigned in such a way to help eliminate the problems... red light cameras are just put up. It provides a nice contribution to the money purse and takes pics/vids of spectacular crashes... but it doesn't address the problems that cause the accidents in the first point.
@PointSpecial09 its a pointless argument. the driver is expected to adapt to the road..........not the other way around. roads are designed to be dead dumb stupid simple, if its too cerebral...................stay home.
@1MtnBoy It's not a pointless argument because if the roads were dead dumb stupid simple, then there wouldn't be accidents. There wouldn't be indecision (like there is with stop lights) and there wouldn't be orthogonal contact points with severe accidents shown here.
The roads are poorly designed... and so they're not "dead dumb stupid simple." They are, by and large, antiquated designs from a bygone era. They haven't been modified or updated in decades and reengineering hasn't happened.
@PointSpecial09 if your assertion had any foundation, there would be no video's of anyone else stopped at the "poorly designed and antiquated roads". EVERYONE would blow right through. there would never be an instance where one person stopped and another driver does not stop. these are clearly marked intersections in this video, with 3-4 other drivers stopped and 1 knucklehead thats not paying attention. it does not support your premise.
@PointSpecial09 no. roads are laid out very simply. DOT is not going to coddle to the lowest 3% of drivers.
the problem is "People not paying attention", its human nature. just how do you propose to change that ? all legislature is capable of doing is legislating. all any municipality can do is attempt to force drivers to obey the law by passing laws but it is never going to prevent accidents. that is statistically impossible.
@PointSpecial09 worst case: youve got 5 seconds to stop for a fresh yellow. thats still 365 ft. "Most" vehicles can stop in under 220-280 ft without any drama or even ABS from 60 MPH, so intersections at 35, 45 or 50mph shouldnt even be an issue.
I'm an advocate for drivers... yes, as I said, drivers have to do their part, but if a road is poorly designed to the point that accidents are happening there ALL THE TIME, there's something wrong. Why this one intersection, and not another, or, for that matter, EVERY other? We're not talking about 2 lane roads here... we're talking about urban areas with 6 lane roads and medians, with trucks and lots of traffic. You can't always see a sign that an intersection is coming up.
@PointSpecial09 I live in the "sticks" drive every day. makes no difference. DOT has been approving municipality traffic studies for DECADES ! we have some of the best roads in the world to drive on. you dont even have to speak english, signage is so simple. if you cannot see a light or sign or an intersection thats approaching you have no business driving here at all.
I have driven in Seoul also and I prefer OUR road system by a longshot. Go drive in Korea and then complain about US roads, LOL
What the hell are people smoking in America? I've never seen this kind of thing in my life! If this happened a handful of times I would think ok, the drivers are not looking properly, misread the traffic lights or were doing something stupid like using a mobile phone... but the sheer number of these incidents makes me wonder what the hell people are smoking that they think they can fly out at a red light and that nothing will happen. Playing with other peoples f**king lives... horrendous.
What's amazing is how people try to fit their vehicle between cars already stopped at an intersection... It absolutely boggles the human mind. Another thing is how many of these drivers are color blind... I'd be very curious to know. But color blind or not, these idiots shouldn't include other innocent drivers and pedestrians in their bid for the Darwin Award... Incredible!
@XxBakerxX72 And I bet you the truck after him @3:49 was going to follow him, they may be bodies or have been street racing or something... and he could have crashed into the police car!
It's amazing to me how many of these accidents are happening at the same intersections and how many of the intersections have red light cameras. Of course, that's likely where the videos came from in the first place... and while some of these accidents are purely because of driver error/distraction and indifference to the laws, I think that a number of them are probably just poorly engineered intersections. The cities try to throw a red light camera there to catch people who run them, but ...
@TheSestren Absolutely. When there aren't proper sight lines you can't seen when the light is red or when it is green. When there isn't sufficient warning that there is a light or other cues (such as the light on a seeming straight stretch of road that is bisected by a small cut in the median, etc), when there isn't sufficient yellow light time...
There's a plethora of reasons why accidents are chronically happening at these same intersections, and it's not all user-error.
@PointSpecial09 you mean like that foot thick white line in the road ? or the 2ft x 4ft "Signal Ahead" signs ? or those pesky flashing signal lights ? yeah I know what you mean. (sigh)
BTW:yellows are DOT mandated nationwide. here they must be 3-5 seconds. and signage & signaling is ample and highly effective for the drivers who are paying attention. (slap)
@TheSestren After watching this again, I see some common themes. The 1st is highly excessive speed. That's a recipe for disaster in most cases. 2nd is stop lights that are on wires as opposed to normal standards. In some cases, these are just dots in the sky and truly are poorly engineered intersections. One does not have the visual cues that a stop light is present. Also with some of the night crashes, there isn't sufficient lighting of the intersection, again this is easily corrected.
@PointSpecial09" these are just dots in the sky " OMG whats that in the road ? an airplane ! ? a UFO? where am I toto ?
" there isn't sufficient lighting of the intersection, again this is easily corrected." Yes it is, You have your own lights right on the front of the car and hey whada know they are even pointed in the same direction you want to go. pretty good huh ? are you one of those 1/2 blind seniors looking through the steering wheel ? ? or just got your license ? which one ?
some people shouldn't be allowed on the road. what good are camera's if no one is watching them??? they are useless!!! I just watched in horror a the lack of caution. STAY HOME MORON'S !!!

I agree I would extend yellows too but not too much or drivers will exploit that too
1MtnBoy 6 months ago
@1MtnBoy A study was completed in 1982 concerning human reaction time. The mean reaction time found was 1.62 seconds with a standard deviation of 1.26 seconds. This clearly can't be a bell-shaped curve, because one cannot have an instantaneous or negative reaction time.... so the curve will have a right-skew extending out many seconds away. With a bell-shaped curve, about 95% of the distribution is within 2 standard deviations, but with right-skewed, most will be closer to the mean, but some..
PointSpecial09 5 months ago
(cont'd) will be beyond two standard deviations... which will be upwards of 4 seconds. With a 3 second yellow light, it carries the vehicle into the intersection before the break is even applied, and again, this is assuming that there are no other distractions. The vehicle still needs to have time to break, which takes more time and distance and can vary drastically among cars.
Look, I think that people should stop for red lights. But I think that there are more factors than people think about.
PointSpecial09 5 months ago
@PointSpecial09 your correct. it is not bell shaped. one of the biggest reasons is that we dont have the same reaction time every time at every opportunity, we are humans not machines. data has to have a variable for that.
1MtnBoy 5 months ago
@1MtnBoy Right, but my argument all along has been that roads need to be designed for those people who are poor drivers/have slow reaction times. I don't see much evidence that problem intersections are being redesigned in such a way to help eliminate the problems... red light cameras are just put up. It provides a nice contribution to the money purse and takes pics/vids of spectacular crashes... but it doesn't address the problems that cause the accidents in the first point.
PointSpecial09 5 months ago
@PointSpecial09 its a pointless argument. the driver is expected to adapt to the road..........not the other way around. roads are designed to be dead dumb stupid simple, if its too cerebral...................stay home.
1MtnBoy 5 months ago
@1MtnBoy It's not a pointless argument because if the roads were dead dumb stupid simple, then there wouldn't be accidents. There wouldn't be indecision (like there is with stop lights) and there wouldn't be orthogonal contact points with severe accidents shown here.
The roads are poorly designed... and so they're not "dead dumb stupid simple." They are, by and large, antiquated designs from a bygone era. They haven't been modified or updated in decades and reengineering hasn't happened.
PointSpecial09 5 months ago
@PointSpecial09 if your assertion had any foundation, there would be no video's of anyone else stopped at the "poorly designed and antiquated roads". EVERYONE would blow right through. there would never be an instance where one person stopped and another driver does not stop. these are clearly marked intersections in this video, with 3-4 other drivers stopped and 1 knucklehead thats not paying attention. it does not support your premise.
1MtnBoy 5 months ago
@PointSpecial09 no. roads are laid out very simply. DOT is not going to coddle to the lowest 3% of drivers.
the problem is "People not paying attention", its human nature. just how do you propose to change that ? all legislature is capable of doing is legislating. all any municipality can do is attempt to force drivers to obey the law by passing laws but it is never going to prevent accidents. that is statistically impossible.
unless you would prefer a cop riding shotgun ??
1MtnBoy 5 months ago
@PointSpecial09 worst case: youve got 5 seconds to stop for a fresh yellow. thats still 365 ft. "Most" vehicles can stop in under 220-280 ft without any drama or even ABS from 60 MPH, so intersections at 35, 45 or 50mph shouldnt even be an issue.
1MtnBoy 6 months ago
@1mtnboy
PointSpecial09 7 months ago

Incredible!

3abbosi 8 months ago
... that isn't going to solve the issues that are inherent with the intersections.
PointSpecial09 8 months ago
It's amazing to me how many of these accidents are happening at the same intersections and how many of the intersections have red light cameras. Of course, that's likely where the videos came from in the first place... and while some of these accidents are purely because of driver error/distraction and indifference to the laws, I think that a number of them are probably just poorly engineered intersections. The cities try to throw a red light camera there to catch people who run them, but ...
PointSpecial09 8 months ago
@PointSpecial09 Poorly engineered intersections? What's hard to understand about STOP WHEN THE LIGHT IS RED? There is no excuse.
TheSestren 7 months ago
@TheSestren Absolutely. When there aren't proper sight lines you can't seen when the light is red or when it is green. When there isn't sufficient warning that there is a light or other cues (such as the light on a seeming straight stretch of road that is bisected by a small cut in the median, etc), when there isn't sufficient yellow light time...
There's a plethora of reasons why accidents are chronically happening at these same intersections, and it's not all user-error.
PointSpecial09 7 months ago
@PointSpecial09 you mean like that foot thick white line in the road ? or the 2ft x 4ft "Signal Ahead" signs ? or those pesky flashing signal lights ? yeah I know what you mean. (sigh)
BTW:yellows are DOT mandated nationwide. here they must be 3-5 seconds. and signage & signaling is ample and highly effective for the drivers who are paying attention. (slap)
1MtnBoy 7 months ago
@TheSestren After watching this again, I see some common themes. The 1st is highly excessive speed. That's a recipe for disaster in most cases. 2nd is stop lights that are on wires as opposed to normal standards. In some cases, these are just dots in the sky and truly are poorly engineered intersections. One does not have the visual cues that a stop light is present. Also with some of the night crashes, there isn't sufficient lighting of the intersection, again this is easily corrected.
PointSpecial09 7 months ago
@PointSpecial09" these are just dots in the sky " OMG whats that in the road ? an airplane ! ? a UFO? where am I toto ?
" there isn't sufficient lighting of the intersection, again this is easily corrected." Yes it is, You have your own lights right on the front of the car and hey whada know they are even pointed in the same direction you want to go. pretty good huh ? are you one of those 1/2 blind seniors looking through the steering wheel ? ? or just got your license ? which one ?

Honestly, the FEEL i got from watching this video is that at least half of these RLRs were focused on something OTHER than driving!
-Texting/talking on a phone crossed my mind first
-Reaching for something that required turning away from the driving position.
Only 1/3 of these drivers seemed like they wanted to run the lights.
