  • Too bad doing boolean operations with hi-poly meshes causes Blender to freeze. ZBrush can handle booleans much better. I haven't warmed up to ZBrush's interface yet though so I wish I could accomplish this in Blender.

  • Thank you!

  • You should mention the hotkeys you are using, helps newbies.

  • @trimpton good idea. i will try to mess with the youtube features so i can add it without redoing the whole tutorial. my new tutorials all show the hot keys in blender while I'm making the tutorial. Thanks for the idea

  • @trimpton I edited the video. i hope this helps

  • Man!

Thanks a bunch! I did not try bolian a while since it was broken... I cant tell how stupid it feels, i could use ti so much since, but never tried it again. :/ Also pretty useful info about that alt-f! This will save hours of my life.

  • @kistuszek I know what you mean. I'm the same way when i take a break from using blender. i feel lost but it all comes back fast lol. Glad i could help

  • lol. don't work wit monkey to well but i think it cool and useful :)

  • Wonderful tutorial Mike. You make the use of the Boolean Modifier easy-to-understand. Plus, I didn't know you could create your own objects using Bezier Curves. To me, that was an added bonus, and one I'm certain I'll be using in the near future.

  • cant get past 1:12 i keep getting an error message modifier cannot be applied to mesh with shape keys....DAMMIT oh and my blender looks diff. im using 2.49b

  • @apoc6400 ya i would suggest getting the newest versions of blender so you can take advantage of the new features (cycles, dynamic paint, ect.)

  • @NsanecomX1 i have it but sadly i finally made something and cant get it to come out and into fallout 3

  • @apoc6400 Going from memory here, but... You have to delete all but one of the shape keys and the remaining one will be the "true" shape of the mesh. Then just delete that one and problem fixed - no more shape keys prohibiting you from applying modifiers. If you need to preserve the effects of several of the shape keys it is possible to combine two shape keys in to one, and you can do this one at a time to eventually combine all the shape keys into the one - then delete it as I metioned.

  • Thanks. Very useful!

  • thanks a lot , it work very great, the only problem I have is that I'm doing a pistol, and when I cut a custom beziercircle out of the gun, the vertices around the hole become deformed

  • @yumyum97 I don't know what shape or part of the gun you're cutting out but if you look at the "Broken Wall Tutorial". It's one of my other videos, it should help. If you have any questions you can visit my website and find my email address on the about page. I'd give you my email here but it's too public

  • @NsanecomX1 Ive watched it, I forgot to mention that I wanna cut a hole where the trigger will be and the entire gun is in subdivide modifier ( subsurf);

  • @yumyum97 I'm guessing when you do it it the outsides are deleted (leaving a solid shape in the middle of the curve) rather than the inside (leaving a hole in the middle of the subsurfed shape).

    2 work arounds:

instead of selecting difference select intersect

    or

create your shape with the curve (alt +c to make it connect), then convert it to mesh (alt + c in object mode). Go in to edit mode and give it faces (alt + f). Extrude through shape and then select difference in the boolean operation

  • i forgot to mention to apply the subsurf modification before applying the boolean. if you do it reverse the edges will be messed up and jagged.

  • Thank you. Is there any drawback to using this as opposed to using "To Sphere" method in the Mesh menu?

  • @falariem I haven't used the "To Sphere" much, but from what i understand, the "To Sphere" is for transforming a shape (its edges) to be more rounded/ spherical. This tutorial is just showing how to cut holes in other shapes. I don't think the 2 are related but i might be misunderstanding your question.

  • @NsanecomX1 Thanks, that answer works for me. I was only curious, more from a n00b standpoint than anything else, because they look like two methods that do the exact same thing.

Keep up with the videos. They're very useful!

  • Thank you so much!

  • Really helpful, thanks! :D

  • Wow man thanks, this worked great!

  • Awesome Tutorial. Answered my question perfectly. +1
