before light, L had no friends, he didn't know how to show friendship either, aside from the biblical theory, this was his way of giving back to his first friend...something we all naturally feel like doing
I had already loved L before this scene, but this scene really gave me a sentimental view of L. Many people say that L rubbing Light's feet is Yaoi, and maybe it is a bit, but its an acknowledgement of defeat from one friend to another. It's a beautiful moment, conceding to death that way, and telling your greatest enemy that they were also your best friend
I love how these people don't actually know that Jesus did not massage Judas feet. It was Jesus who massaged Peter's feet. But the principal still applies.
This is my first time properly watching this and it made me cry...I think it started at the water droplets on Light's feet...it was like Jesus crying...
*wipes tears away from eyes* Now I really miss L. He knew he was going to SPOILER
I felt that the "feet washing" part held an extremely significant, dark meaning, but apparently this scene only takes place in the anime, which is surprising as to how Ohba never thought of making such a reference in the manga itself. I would say that the animators really did well in creating this scene even when the manga was void of it, I felt that it was one of the deepest parts in this story.
man i just wished that after this scene, they instead drop their battle, and instead have light give the notebook to Rem, who would constantly find greedy people to use the DN, and light and L would be finding kiras for the rest of their lives together lol
im a guy but no homo, they needed eachother, light needed him to stay sane and careful, L needed him because he was lonely
The thing that makes this scene so heart-wrenching for me (other than the piano, because that certainly adds to the depth) is how L seems to realize that his death is imminent. He just seems so innocent, and it makes me imagine how afraid I'd be in his situation--knowing everything I knew and that I was going to die regardless. He's totally saying goodbye to Light here.
Also, the massaging of the feet is a Biblical reference. really the silent moment and the pensive/vacant look in L's eye's is just screaming that he's making peace with it, but also more...sigh, this scene does a perfect job of catching that moment between people where all our mentality and psychology is present. He didn't just know that he was going to die that day. He knew everything. He already established that Light was at one point Kira, but the helicopter incident and sudden change in light tipped him off; he work it in his mind until he knew Light was Kira again. Light also gave a very political answer in return to L's question - if light ever told the truth. In fact absolutely everything L said was a test for Light...and light failed each and every one by his answers.
Is weird that I DON'T think this part is yaoi?? True, it seems kinda weird at first, but the more I watched the scene, L seemed more child-like than romantic. It seemed like he was just genuinely trying to be nice in the only semi-creepy way that he's used to. ...That's my opinion, at least. It's still a really great scene. It gives a lot more depth to L. He seems more human in a way.
Love this scene so flipin much! Damn you, light! I freaked out! There's no point in watching continuous after that. RIP BEST EVER KNOWN INVESTIGATOR, love you more than Sherlock Holmes and Puaro both, L...
L knew he was going to die and there was nothing he could do about it which is why he did something so pathetic as washing Light's feet. It was his was of paying homage to Kira.
Bravo, Kira, you win, you're going to kill me and there is nothing I can do about it.
i personally admire light.. regardless of his actual intentions, it takes serious strength to put your closest friend to death without shedding a tear... i stand both in awe and disgust at his mental strength
@DurrtyFilth I agree with your statement about being both in awe and disgust and his mental "strength", but there's nothing strong about killing someone like that. Light always knew he was going to kill L, so they were never "close friends". There's no mental strength involved with killing someone like that: it's all about having a closed heart. And light is as closed and cold as they come.
Its funnny tht Light knows hes going to kill L and he still acts as if he is his frnd... Dont u have some kind of feelings in reponse to tht like mine was CRYCRYCRY* U BASTARD IMA KILLL U!! LIGHT UR GOING THE FUCK DOWN!!! But i still cnt c tht after all tht L did after he realized Light was not Kira Light still kills him, and still wants him dead. After L was being a FRIEND to him, well fuck light u dont deserve frnds after tht ithink im just going to kill u or should i wait for Near to do it???
A lot of ppl believe this is a reference to the Last Supper, and I think it fits. On a personal note, I think L was trying to show Light in his own way that there are still ppl in the world who want to do good, bc Light was so disgusted w. ppl. Light sees this and when he dries L's hair it's his way of saying he has a good side to him. When L says we'll be parting soon I think he is regretful. If the 2 hadn't been enemies they would've been friends Btw: they are so not gay for each other.
When Light touched L's hair at 4:37 and dried them, I started to cry as hell. This scene is very powerful and symbolic. I'm not a big fan od this L&Light relationship thing, but at this moment I really wanted them to hug or something. But a few minutes later L died and that really sucks. He was my favorite..
@XXHSMCXX I believe the whole point of this was symbolism. In this scenario Judas was Light and L was Jesus. In case you didn't know, at the Last Supper, right before Jesus died, he washed each of his Disciples' feet and massaged them, including Judas'. I think this was the way the author portrayed L forgiving Light for all his crimes, as well as attempting to kill him later on. This is just what I think, but it would be very logical if that is what the author meant :)
In the bible, just before the last supper, Jesus washes and massages Judas' feet (as a sign of respect back in the day) despite the fact that he knew Judas was going to betray him later on down the line. Which, in a way, shows that he's the bigger, better person.
SPOILERS BELOW:
And it's placed nearly in the same context. L being like Jesus, and Light being like Judas. Because just moments later, Light finally succeeds in killing L.
@PearLock You are right and wrong. I'm not going to argue about the biblical aspect of your thesis, for I do not believe in such things, but I will argue about the part where you say "Light finally succeeds in killing L". In my point of view, I believe that even if Light wanted to kill L, he would be incapable of doing it himself. I think Light intentionally planned to have Rem kill L, so he wouldn't have too. I believe Light respected L far too much to do it himself. This scene may prove that.
I was expecting L to go off on the tangent of "during the period of time we were handcuffed, i gave you many a foot massage while you were sleeping and i wasnt (i need to lay off the cake and coffee). And despite what you were thinking, i only did it out of boredom."
One day I was by my grendparents .. It was a really rany day.. At this day I was outside with a friend. "do you hear the bells?" she asked me and I was like OMG !!. She had never seen Death Note.. She was wondering about my face :DD (sorry, for my faults :DD greetings from germany ^^ )
by the way .. I really want to be Light , at this scene ^__^
I don't find this to be so much in a homosexual context. Its meant to deepen their odd relationship.
Tentative friends. Rivals beyond a doubt, but respectful. Proof Light respects L is the finale... he gets angry that Mello dared wear a mask of L's face. And of course, the hidden context of being bitter enemies.
This series would have ended better if both had taken each other down. Don't get me wrong, love Mello and Near, but L should have been the one to take down Light, dying in the process.
hey what do u think would happen if at theschool where L was all liek ooh u r kira bitch and light is thinkin of shit to make up what do u think would happen if light would just grab him and kiss him!
I can hear the bells...Just hear them chiming....I can hear the bells....my temperature's climbing....I can't contain my joy 'cause I've finally found the boy I've been missin'.....LISTEN!....I can hear the bells... xD
@Markeyssc I think it's supposed to represent the Bells of Death. If you haven't figured it out yet, Light kills L in the next scene of the episode. Somehow, L seems aware that he's going to die and it seems he's hearing the "bell that tolls for thee".
As to the homophobes anxious about this scene concerning sexuality, I have one thing to say;
This is an anime, so anything can happen, such as a god of death coming into the human world, armed with a notebook that can kill anyone whose name is written inside it's pages. Do NOT give me shit about how surprised you are that someone is suggesting his sexuality isn't what you consider "normal," or how it diminishes L's character in any way. It's probably the most realistic thing in the whole damn s
@Ivoreh I agree with you 100%. I actually think this part enhances L's character and makes him more realistic. However, I do have to say that for some reason this doesn't seem like yaoi to me. It just seems like an honest little moment between two people. Granted, the whole foot massage thing is a little weird, but then again, L isn't your average character either.
I feel as if the moment L stands in the rain is the same moment that we see him in the credits, that he is finally seeing the 'game' for what it is. I think he is mourning both Light's and his deaths at once, as products of careless immortals and their own arrogance. I think he says it will be lonely as an irony because they were together during both of their deaths and spent their lives without confidantes before meeting each other. Parting ways with your equal would be like losing a spouse.
I don't know if he gave him a massage because he knows he's going to die so it's like a goodbye gift or maybe it is supposed to have sexual undertones, maybe he was Bi, I say so because of how excited he got when misa pecked him on the cheek
I don't think it's a foot massage, but rather he's washing Lights feet. It's a reference to the practice in the Christian church. The Bible says, "And before the feast of the passover, Jesus knowing that His hour hath come, that He may remove out of this world unto the Father, having loved His own who are in the world -- to the end He loved them." I'm probably not connecting the dots right, but I think L is Jesus in this scene. It later says Jesus "began to wash the feet of his disciples".
@omgBreakingDawn I honestly think the only person with whom Light had any communion or grief for was L. If Light could have loved his equal and abandoned the game, there could have been an entirely different world. The most painful part is that L does not want to die but he knows its coming. The fact that he says " I'm sorry" is I feel the moment that L acknowledges that Light will die alone and that had he created a better world sooner, Kira might not have been born from Light's helplessness.
"i just realized something, in the bible the day before jesus dies he washed the feet of his deciples to tell them of his appreciation, does this mean L new he was going to die and he wanted to thank light by washing his feet ??"
This scene probably doesen't mean they were doing eachother xD or that they were gay or anything. But I think on some level it shows some sort of affection. They are so similar they would have liked eachother more than they liked other people even though they hated each other too.
xD This scene made me love Death Note. It also made me search L/Light fanfiction and made me realise how everyone else knows the truth about these two, even if the writers didn't.
Did anyone just hear that really loud cracking noise? That was my heart splitting in two. Light was L's only friend. And for a measly second- it seemed like Light cared, too. But he didn't. It's just so sad that L knew he was going to die! I won't ever get over it! NEVER!
ok people The bell part is just foreshadowing his death when people "hear a bell" or "See the light" that means they are about to die. The feet part is a reference to the bible.
If by going "AWWWW!!!!" you mean 'felt my own heart shatter inside my ribcage,' then yes. I don't think this necessarily implies homosexuality, but if you want to see it that way, it can support it. L and Light's relationship is a unique one; I don't think it's easily classifiable as being anything in particular.
@Hairii3 Out of character? He knew from the start that Light was a liar. Though I do see that he seems somewhat sad or disappointed that his time has come.
@RyanLuckyNinko that's kinda what i meant. he's not usually this emotional. i think he really did want light to be his friend. too bad- if things were different, maybe they could have been.
Alright Im sorry but I had to fangirl squeal when Light makes that noise and Lawliet say you'll get used to it, I'm not going into yaoi but yeah it made me think of that X3
The saddest part is that he knows he's going to die and yet he is so calm about it.

***LUKE I AM YOUR FATHER ALERT***
I don't know if he gave him a massage because he knows he's going to die so it's like a goodbye gift or maybe it is supposed to have sexual undertones, maybe he was Bi, I say so because of how excited he got when misa pecked him on the cheek
thezec 9 months ago
I thought it had more satirical undertones, like L knows light is an egomaniac and is conveying that idea.

WHAT EPISODE sdfdsafgdsafd?
Lawliet710Kun 10 months ago
I don't think it's a foot massage, but rather he's washing Lights feet. It's a reference to the practice in the Christian church. The Bible says, "And before the feast of the passover, Jesus knowing that His hour hath come, that He may remove out of this world unto the Father, having loved His own who are in the world -- to the end He loved them." I'm probably not connecting the dots right, but I think L is Jesus in this scene. It later says Jesus "began to wash the feet of his disciples".

And I'm sorry to all normal fans, but this scene SCREAMS yaoi. Sorry. But it does.
omgBreakingDawn 10 months ago 15
@omgBreakingDawn Let's be honest, most of Light and L's interactions scream yaoi.
slightlyoutofreach01 10 months ago
@slightlyoutofreach01 True. Not complaining, though.
omgBreakingDawn 10 months ago
@omgBreakingDawn I honestly think the only person with whom Light had any communion or grief for was L. If Light could have loved his equal and abandoned the game, there could have been an entirely different world. The most painful part is that L does not want to die but he knows its coming. The fact that he says " I'm sorry" is I feel the moment that L acknowledges that Light will die alone and that had he created a better world sooner, Kira might not have been born from Light's helplessness.

@omgBreakingDawn I know right I so agree is so touching

"i just realized something, in the bible the day before jesus dies he washed the feet of his deciples to tell them of his appreciation, does this mean L new he was going to die and he wanted to thank light by washing his feet ??"

Yaoi? Yeah, sure.

Lol epic foreshadowing - L hears church bells, bells that will shortly ring for him. Because he dies. If you get what I mean.

Yeah, this is a Biblical Reference, not what some thought it was originaly (meaning something gay)
NickBoettcher 1 year ago
I know it's supposed to be a biblical reference, and I don't ship these two to the extent that SOME PEOPLE do, but *sigh* I love L/Light.
MissAmiTimeLord 1 year ago
If by going "AWWWW!!!!" you mean 'felt my own heart shatter inside my ribcage,' then yes. I don't think this necessarily implies homosexuality, but if you want to see it that way, it can support it. L and Light's relationship is a unique one; I don't think it's easily classifiable as being anything in particular.
That being said, I do ship it. Hard.

Light is a terrible liar :P
luathepua 1 year ago
anyone else notice L's acting a bit out of character in this scene? like he knew light was a dirty traitor.
Hairii3 1 year ago 3
@Hairii3 Out of character? He knew from the start that Light was a liar. Though I do see that he seems somewhat sad or disappointed that his time has come.
RyanLuckyNinko 1 year ago
@RyanLuckyNinko that's kinda what i meant. he's not usually this emotional. i think he really did want light to be his friend. too bad- if things were different, maybe they could have been.
