1967....my Plymouth Fury was brand new and the Summer of Love was upon us. Still have the Fury and these songs still sound as great as the V-8 in the Mopar....
Trading Hits For Pieces? I believe that refers to trading hits of LSD for pieces of Psylicybin Mushrooms in Peoples Park in San Francisco during the summer of love. Dude.
I'm 28... I prefer the 60's and 70's music over ANYTHING created in the last 20 years (With the exception of country music). Today's "Music" is nothing but a joke. Just people using the talents of those before them and remixing it so that they get paid. You will NEVER see any "stars" (present and in the future) put out their own talent to make it their own. They use and re use catchy harmonies and tunes and put their words in it to make a dollar. That's all today's music is. Period.
That's the very talented Mr. Klaus Voorman friend to the Beatles and the artist that designed the Beatles Revolver album cover playing the bass and singing harmonies..He was with Manfred Mann from 66-69
@smasherhits Thank you very much. I was going to post a comment asking if that was Klaus Voorman in this video...and I see my question was answered 37 minutes before I asked it. I think he also played bass on a lot of the songs on the "Ringo" album as well.
The stoned-looking one with specs is actually bassist Tom Mcguiness. Manfred was a jazz andblues purist who cynically accepted the necessity of recording cute pop songs
I remember as an 8 year old,Ireland drew 1-1 with Holland in the 1990 World Cup. Niall Quinn scored the equaliser for us,and we got to the 2nd Round (where we beat Romania on penalties!!). I will never forget the street parties after the Holland match, and THIS SONG was played from one of the bars in honour of Niall Quinn!! Complete legend!! : D
@GetOnTheFloor82 I remember Ireland as a really really good side in the late 80's / early 90's. Always a shame that they had to play against my country (Holland) and England in the group stages. Underrated side at that moment.
I can't believe this has such a low view count. This song was huge in Canada in the 60's. One of the greatest stoner songs of all time. Klaus Voorman is mulit-talented for sure, I heard he even taught some bass licks to Bill Wyman when Bill was in the Stones.
Learned the lyrics on the transistor radio in the kitchen on top of the fridge. Great mono tiny sound. Had to wait an hour to hear it again to learn the next bit. Kinda miss AM hit rotation.
My teenage son ask me" dad who are those mop head singers"...I reply " son those singers inspired me with a purpose in life during the period". Yes those were the days when we got nothing much to do, no computer, few tV shows, shopping mall etc except to bring our radio down to the beach and listen to Mannfred mann, Small faces, Herman hermit, Rolling stones, Beatles, Lulu, Pet Clarke, Hollies, Love affairs and so on....I miss those lazy days and not the present rat days....
@JonnyLikesPie yes their was an eskimo named quinn, it was the actor anthony quinn, he played an eskimo in a movie. that inspired these guys to write this song. as u said (this just in).....tommy
Dylan cover, and the great man himself was always enthusiastic about the Manfreds' covers of his songs. Obviously very different from the Dylan original, but an excellent track nonetheless.
@JayBBluejay Mike D'Abo was in the original stage production of Jesus Christ Superstar and Olivia is his daughter, not his sister:-O I don't know about you but that sure makes me feel old,lol
@sheyna1 Sorry for the error. Thanks for the correction. I was born in 1968 but it was a few months after the record was released. I liked this song from the start, and the first time I heard (or saw) this song was when MTV showed this as part of their "Closet Classics" and before they were doing the Real World/Jersey Shore crap that they show now.
@JayBBluejay No worries, it's a totally honest mistake not really an error and besides, you were asking:-) I'm only a few years older than you but I remember Manfred Mann, the cast recording of JCSS and Deep Purple (he was also in that group) really well. It's hard for me to imagine that he has a daughter Olivia's age, maybe I just don't want to think about it..., tick, tick, tick, lol

In the old days of AM radio, it was frequently difficult to understand a lot of lyrics. The line "Everybody's gonna wanna doze" was misinterpreted by many suspicious adults as "Everybody's gonna want a dose", which is why in my fairly parochial home town, we were warned it was a drug themed song. Exactly. Everbody wants a dose.
Loved this song. Had no idea as a younger version of me what they were talking about. Still love it though.
