  • The second line is spot on but not sure about the first line; It's pretty clear IMO by the way they say "Bye" to each other that they're not continuing their relationship (dude has to go back for his kids). It's a similar love story to "Once".

  • "promise me that the next ?? you s??t go to the ??? man and tell the truth, okay?

  • hope... is what drives us to live beyond the truth

  • you dont even have to make it louder. everyone should purely treat the situation like it was for the whole movie. in life id be the same. exactly the same. cheers to all. :)

  • yup, i think that the release in her reaction is followed by those words. he couldnt left her with only one option. that was the whole idea of the movie. nothing changed. he did what a real man would do. like me :P just leave her with options and freedom of choice. :)

  • "...keep goin' with his tour, okay?" i think thats 100% it.

  • Actually I hear quite clearly: "I WON'T SEE YOU 'TILL THE NEXT BUSINESSTRIP...etcetera..."

  • As you say it is quite hard to understand... In fact bettwen the "I won't see you" and "Suntory" I can't understand a word, but then it is perfectly clear on this video that he says "Go back and tell me the truth" and not "Go to that man and tell him the truth" - either way the referrence is always to her boyfriend, so the meaning doesnt change ;) - thanks, I always wondered as well what he said and now I know. :)

  • hey, can someone recommend me some films that r same like this one.. (like Closer, London or Broken Flowers, Shrink..) Im really addicted to those films!

  • @icetealongisland Last Night 2010

  • @icetealongisland Check out Somewhere, Sofia Coppola's most recent film, if you haven't already. It's a lot like Lost in Translation

  • Open your shit box and get ready for Freddie!

  • he was just improvising lol.

  • He just had to say something, and we were never supposed to know what he said.

  • I think he whispered "it's suntory time"

  • For years, no one other than Bill Murray, Scarlett Johansson and Sofia Coppola knew what Bob whispered to Charlotte in the final scene, but on October 28, 2009, a youtube video surfaced containing a slightly enhanced audio of this part of the film with subtitles where more than 20 thousand visitors had a chance to find out that Bob whispered to Charlotte: 'I won't see you till the next making of Suntory. Go to that man and tell him the truth, okay?'

  • @mongolenpup

The truth is that she's not happy with her husband. At the beginning of the movie she has a telephone call and says something like "I don't know why I married him". She feels lonely, and he's rarely "home", they have almost nothing in common. If it wasn't for that, her relationship with Bob might have been different.

  • i wont see you till the next making of santori o to that and tell him the truth ,ok

    (will that be?)

  • Got it, he is all like: "BITCH, next time you better swallow goddamit...and she is all like "ok" :)

  • 3. "Can I say something? Go to that man and tell him the truth. Okay?"

Take your pick! I'd like to believe the first one. It makes sense and also I'm a hopeless romantic and love happy endings like this one. LOL!

Being a hopeless romantic, I'd like to think it's suggestion number 1 above. LOL!

If anyone finds out the truth, please let us know!!!

  • I have found a few suggestions that I'd like to share...

1.. "I love you deeply. When John gets back, tell him the truth. Okay?" This fits with the rest of the film in that she asked him for advice about marriage, and he was telling her not to make the same mistakes he had. 2. "I HAVE TO BE LEAVING... BUT, DON'T LET THAT COME BETWEEN US... OK?"

  • "Next time we meet, I will bone you so hard, and maybe you will give me head. Yea... You gonna give me head. I will like it..."

  • I was the wristwatch in this scene and I can confirm Bill Murray said: "der se, A fe fe fe spwsss if, go per a ma tell him the truth, ok?"

  • get bitches

  • I have never seen the movie, but I am a junkie of the "Lost in translation" videos here on youtube. Keeping the context of the sad Bill Murray realising he has no chance with the younger Johansson and their meeting, I would hazard a guess that:

He said she hurt him, and if ever she should meet someone she cared for, she should be HONEST with "that man". That is why she looked so struck, and why he had to walk away so hurriedly.

  • @Prometheus1st good guess... if only what you were "keeping in context" was anything close to what was actually going on.

  • Its "Promise me that the next time we meet, (youl) go up to that man and tell him the truth, okay?" Not positive on (youl) cause it doesnt keep pace with the end of the first line after the (t) sound from the end of "meet" but im absolutely sure I have it correct. Also you can hear the "M" sound from promise if you listen closely not to mention Promise me that the next time we meet is more heartfull and doesnt sound rushed where "go up" rolls off his tounge too quickly after the proposed santori

  • ^ Also close your eyes when you listen to it, the text tricks the mind into thinking its something different. Headpones help too.

  • The thing is, what he said to her is whatever you imagined. It's completely open to interpretation. That's the beauty of such a perfect film. :)

  • "I have to be leaving, but I won't let that come between us, Ok?"

  • @emmactress1894 that was a proper one...

  • @24dizzylizzy Pardon?

  • i saw the dubbed version in spanish and it says sth like this "you are ??? in a long time, ??? that smile"

maybe it doesnt have anything to do with the original version but i guess when they translated the script the whisper part must've been also written down, dont u think?

  • This is very interesting. The most fun part of this all is that there are multiple versions of the whisper that seem to fit. So we still don't know whether they will see eachother again! Which was the point of the director I guess.

  • We´ll never realy know what he said... Just think what perfect thing you would say at that moment.

Not knowing what he said makes it all the more romantic.

  • when i get home i will tell the truth and come back, ok?

  • i read somewhere that he says "i have to be leaving now, but i wont let that come between us,ok?"

  • saw this today for the first time...was really good!

  • ... "for relaxing times, make it suntory time".

  • It seems many people are in agreeance on "go up to that man and tell him the truth OK".

  • He said...just remember that ships at a distance have every mans wish on board okay.

  • It's fucking irrelovent, who's to say she'll be there next time he's in town? Her husband is shooting a band, they don't live there.

  • "No one will ever believe you."

  • He said, "Are you on Facebook or MySpace. Look me up on Facebook. That's better, okay?"

  • i think he is saying... I want the youthing sex with steaks and tandoori

  • its Suntory

  • @Destointment I know! it's a typo and it didn't notice it until it was too late, I hate it too

  • @alwaysthesamedream hehe no sweat :)

  • "If I don't see you in the next business trip, go up to that man and tell him the truth. Okay?"

  • i don´t agree that that is what i am hearing.. its no more decipherable to my ear here than in the film, and i´m not going to take anybody´s word for it. this is too important!!

  • I like knowing what he said to her. Films that leave you hanging are frustrating. I didn't like the film until I knew what he said at the end.

  • quick question.....go to that man....which man is he talking about....

  • @majesticmaniac I was wondering myself but who else could he be talking about but John?

  • @majesticmaniac, I'd assume John.

  • @majesticmaniac her fotograph boyfriend

  • ignorance isn't bliss people :) now u know what was said

  • Yo guys, I am genuinely sorry for advertising but I uploaded the full ending with a new song. I'd really appreciate it if you tell me what you think. =]

P.S: On subject, what he says doens't matter. They both have smiles on their faces. That's the only thing that does.

  • i agree its better not to know. its a device they used to use alot more often in classic movies. so not only does it add to the depth of the film by emphasizing the emotion of the moment, it's also a tip of the hat to the great love stories of the past. a classy touch.

  • FINALLY I KNOW! i dont care what other people are saying, im sure this is what he said. I love this movie because its almost like random events that come together. I also actually feel more comfortable and great around older people (women) because they are more straight forward, talkative, and open minded...most of the time..lol

-But this movie is really great. Movies like this do not need to make a 'part 2'. Simple great movies like this could do better by themselves.

  • fantastic O_O i love all the quotes but this... :))

  • I love this movie...

  • @970blues me too!

  • @970blues been years ago and still watch it last night

and yeah.. still cant figure it out what Bob whisper to her

but hey.. finally they kissed and that's the right farewell

    they'll make up

  • I will see you at the next making of Suntory. Don´t forget that, telling the truth. OK?

  • you know what. Roger Ebert said it best. we're NOT supposed to hear them. this is their moment. not ours.

  • @joshua237 Wow I almost forgot about that, and he was so right...

  • "Can I say something that's eating me? Go to that man and tell him the truth. Okay?"

  • I hear.."I want to see you at the next filmling..."

  • LETS FUCK IN AMERICA, OK?

  • "I won't see you until the next business trip. Go to that man, and tell him the truth, ok?"

  • You guys are hearing things! That was totally his e-mail address! Keep in touch, okay!

  • @holdenc96

    LMAO! BEST THEORY SO FAR!

  • "Promise me, no matter how hopeless things get, keep on trying, okay? Keep coming chin-up, okay?

  • More specifically:

"I wanna see you on the next plane. Go to that man, and tell him the truth, K?"

And it makes perfect sense. He doesn't want her hanging around Tokyo, wallowing in her own loneliness.

  • @jarrettyoungss well, yeah, probably it makes sense but we are not talking out-of-thin-air possibilities here, can't you actually HEAR the words that are subtitled in this vid? I didn't make this up, I listened to this bit for many, many times until I heard the words.

  • "I wanna see you on the next plane. Go to that man, tell him the truth, K?"

That's what I hear based on your enhancement.. There's a fatherly nature to the way he says it. He sort of raises his tone as he leads up to "... next plane."

Pretty confident that's what it it.

  • @jarrettyoungss what about those three extra syllables after 'plane' in your version and 'making' in mine? I can clearly hear 'Suntory' there and your suggestion assumes there is blank space there.

  • @alwaysthesamedream I'm not hearing Santori at all, sorry. And even if it is there, why would he say that? His making another Santori ad won't affect where she is. Or have I missed something obvious.

  • @jarrettyoungss I can hear Suntory (yeah, it's Suntory, not Santori, I made a mistake there)) ooops..)))) VERY clearly, it's the clearest part of the first sentence. and the sense of it is that IT'S A JOKE. 'I won't see you till the next making of Suntory' means that I probably won't see you again. ever. it's just that Bob doesn't want to put it this way, cause it's too sad and so he jokes that he won't see her only till the next making of Suntory (i.e. never).

  • @jarrettyoungss and when he says 'go to that man and tell him the truth' he means that he wants her to talk to her husband about the problems in their marriage, about her own problems and about how she is slightly depressed now, how she is dissatisfied with her life and think of ways of improvement of the situation.

  • @jarrettyoungss Thats not right, because he keep speaking and thats the part (in the middle) you just ignored. It's NOT background noise. I agree with the owner of this video.

For Santori: Maybe he has another commercial coming up, or IMO more likely he just said that for where they met first (in the meaning "we only meet again if this happens this way again", which means possibly never again).

Use your imagination for such a situation, guys!

  • "I want to see you on the next plane. Go up to that man, and tell him the truth, OK?"

  • Wow you guys have it all wrong! It's quite obvious how the very last whisper by Bill Murray cleverly completes the story by giving hints to what really happened next without seeing it acted out. Notice how in the movie, each day just goes by one after the other and time is running out? Well, think about it... This is what he really said at the end... "I'll stay until the next business day. Don't, forget to tell the truth, OK?"

  • I never thought of them being together. They had their kiss and he rode off in the sunset and they always wondered for the rest of their lives. The great thing about this film is its open to interpretation.

  • "I will fix some issues at home and we will be together ok?"

divorce and happy ending and after few days stays with her forever

  • "something something business trip; don't pretend you're happy [but] tell him the truth, k?' I'm almost sure about that last part.

  • "I love you. Remember to always tell the truth. Okay?"

I might be a little bit off, but I think that's it.

  • @ alwaysthesamedream:

To be plain and simple: I think you are right, that really may be it. I listened to my DVD and is sounds just like that. Thanks for the effort!!!

BTW, my 2nd fav movie of all times (1st one is DUNE (1984 version)).

  • oh well ok he said it is so very wrong of us to do so..

ahem well i kinda agree but thats personal init..

and appearently all this discussion still hasnt lead to a correct answer so no mysteriousness lost here hehehe

besides; if you dont wanna know what bill murray says you shouldnt watch this vid.. but you and shakespear=dead were :-P

(or was that just to comment to people telling us its wrong to wanna know what bill said?)

  • ma che cazzo state a dì!!!!!!! il santori??? ma annateve a pijà du supplì

  • This is so wrong. Bill Murray just muttered something random to her. The beauty is not knowing and just knowing it was perfect. This quote or any other quote doesn't do it justice." That's what makes the film amazing.

  • huh? are we not allowed to wonder what he said and discus what we think it might have been?

  • @shakespearesdead I completely agree the beauty is in not knowing exactly, keeping people guessing because it is such a caring romantic moment - I would so love to do the same in reality when I get a girlfriend, then hope she breaks into a smile when I finish whispering.

  • @shakespearesdead I personally believe that knowing what Bill Murray said is an interesting curiousity, but it should not be taken seriously in disccusing the film.

  • @shakespearesdead that film really was made on this muttered unknown quote - i agree, the ending sealed the validity of this film, and its great to read the reaction like you didn't need to know what was said at all, it was that deep and moving... well said...

  • @shakespearesdead if you look up lost in translation in imdb trivia they will tell you what he said

  • @loserpopulationyou Hi. Pardon me but I have no clue about what imdb trivia is though I'd really like to know what you know. Thanks for telling me.

  • @Fredinotmercurybut

IMDB stands for "Internet Move DataBase". It's a website with movie reviews and stuff like that. Now: every movie has a page, and the pages have several parts, like "plot synopsis", "taglines" etc. "Trivia" is one of those part and is in fact all the funny/weird/creative stuff about the movie.

  • @shakespearesdead

yeah! You have no idea what the fuck he said and that's just perfect because it... uh, and that's the reason why this film is a masterpiece!

  • you've almost got it man.. the last part is definitely right.. the first really is hard to make out.. but i think its something very close to what you got
