I remember when Rock-n-Roll hit, at we thought it was trash music, but what I here today this is wonderful music. He was one of the few to use a Steel Guitar.
The National Endowment for the Arts and the Recording Industry Association of America announced that Bill Haley´s all-time classic, "Rock Around the Clock" has been declared the top traditional rock and roll song of the 20th Century.
Im perplexed by the comments of steveox1961: Rock & Roll, clean. No drugs, sex, violence? "Rock Around the Clock" was featured at the beginning of the movie BLACKBOARD JUNGLE which featured such good things as sex, violence etc? After all one of the meanings of the term "Rock & Roll" is a reference for sex. Remember Little Richard's "Good Golly Miss Molly" - she/he sure loved to ball at the house of blue lights. There were big objections to the music by many for what it was doing to teens.
Good video about the first Dynasty of Rock and Roll. He was the first to overjoy all the crowd and to teach all the world how to rock and roll. His name is engraved in our memories.
So it is not surprising that there is a sharp dividing line between before and after "Rock Around the Clock",the song that started the rock revolution!.
Bill Haley is known the world over as the Father of Rock ’n’ Roll. Haley was the first white artist to combine elements of rhythm & blues, western swing, and hillbilly music to produce the upbeat, danceable, and infectious sound known today as rock ’n’ roll.
Great song, but this was lip synced. There is a slap bass on the recording but the bass player isn't doing any slap on the video; was just played back live.
the fact that hes just standing there and sounds that fucking good is amazing..lets see some asshole these days sound that beautiful while being that raw.
This is hands down one of the greatest rock and roll songs of the 50s....oh and is it me or does Bill Haley look like the Buzz Lightyear doll from Toy Story?
i'm 18 and don't really listen to rock but i looooooooooooveeee this song. its fun and moving and doesn't have stupid or bad lyrics. its clean and good. there really arent many songs like that out there. i wish i could have lived in around this time :)
What I like best about this clip is the two unselfconscious young girls at about 0:35. These days, they'd be preening for the camera or mouthing an obscenity or pointing out a bicep tat or even flashing their boobs.
Im an Huge fan of Bill Haley. Im 48 though. But those were the days when Rock & Roll was clean. No songs about drugs,Sex,Violance or Suicide. It was just good old clean fun.
@GHOSTxXx10 No is not. Todays music is crap. Like ACDC and KISS. Kids back then didnt bring guns or knives to school to cause trouble. Kids were very respective and polite to adults cause parents disapline them. Nowadays parents dont care is why todays kids always in trouble with the law and in trouble with other things. They have no respect for authority unlike kids back in the 50sb did. I blame TV and Movies is why society is out of hand today.
@steveox1961 Good Song, BUT this song does not represent the soul of rock and roll music! Rock and roll music is the embodiment voice of a social protest movement.
This is a good song, but it is also a manufactured song to make money! Just like all of Elvis Presley's music!
And there was sex in rock and roll music in the 50's for example Little Richard, Chuck Barry, and Jerry Lee Lewis have all expressed sexual lyrics in their songs!
@LSweet2007 You don't understand rock and roll at all. Rock and roll music wasn't coopted into becoming the "voice of social protest" until the mid to late sixties. You might recall that in the 1950s and early 1960s protest music was folk music, not rock and roll. Nearly all pop music has been "manufactured" by professional songwriters, this is true of rock and roll as well. So the soul of rock and roll isn't protest, it's simply a primal, dancy beat. Music to dance to and have fun with.
@TheManolis Do you ever listen to ACDC,Twisted Sister,Ozzie Ozzborne And Prince? The Lyrics back in the 80s were all about sex, drugs,Violance and suicide. Bill Haley was good old clean fun nothing about making out with a girl,, Getting up, crime n violance and killing yourself.
@TheManolis No, stranger, it's direct origins, as far as the U.S. of A. is concerned, by gospel singers in the south to mean something of spiritual rapture then lifted it's meaning for what you so adamantly and strictly want to consign it to. For shame.
@Khultan “Fascistic”? Oh my, you do have a way with words! Anyway, let’s get back to the interpretation debate: 1) it is a widely known fact that the word “rock” was used as a metaphor for intercourse in music even before the first rock ‘n’ roll songs, 2) I am not the one who should be blamed of not seeing the other interpretation/dimension here, so by definition I am not “one dimensional” nor a “fascist” (it is scary how easily you can write that).
@steveox1961 Um, not quite. One of the reasons the adults of that era hated the very words "rock 'n' roll" was because they thought it was a euphemism for...something else. And they were right.
@steveox1961 I'm almost 50 as of 8-4-11. My mom tells me she saw Bill Haley as a teenager in Baton Rouge in the 50's. The place "ROCKED!" You really have to love that more innocent era when we had Eisenhower and didn't have hippies.
@WilliamDRowlett Yeah,,Basck in those day they didnt have Democratic Liberalsim like we do now :( Not to mention ,,It wasnt drugs, sex and rock and roll like nowadays :(
