  • I'm having a difficult time finding a mp3 or any kind of plain old audio version of this. Would be nice to have a nice non-compressed version of this. I'll bet there are some amazing nuances in there

  • Amazing cover!

  • He sings good and all, but this version is missing the sadness that fiona delivers.. and is much needed to appreciate this song.. but clap clap good job!

  • better than her version!!!!!

  • I know elvis and fiona are friends but he turned these ROTTEN APPLES into gold.

  • SamoraRafael: Fuckin A'!

  • Fucking amazing version.

  • she must be so thrilled to hear such a great artist sing one of her songs. although shes a great artist herself, and the song. but still! :)

  • Davalrie: I read thru about 40 commentaries. Not only are you in the gaunt minority but you obviously don't know a very good singer when you hear one. I'm as big a fan of Fionas' as any one & don't think ANY singer will ever sing this, her career masterpiece, better than her rendition. However, tone oblivious, Elvis kicked ass. Fiona obviously loved it, eh?

  • Love love love this song!

  • You are not supposed to say "I know" at the end of the song ! thats the whole point

    !

  • Easy to forget what a great singer Elvis is. This is a very hard song to sing, very distinct phrasings, lots of highs and lows. He did an amazing job!

  • @JosephCa64 totally agree! Elvis is far too underrated as a singer.

  • THIS SONG, in my humble, is not only Fiona's Masterpiece ( so far ), but will live on & grow to be truly admired for its' brilliance as time goes by, both lyrically & melodically. On several occassions I'd be playing this song LOUDLY in my car in a park/gas station - wherever - & s-one would say, "Wow, who is that?! It's so bluesy & beautiful & the words are so from the heart, etc, etc. Well, Elvis did it justice & Fiona obvsly flt so 2!

  • I originally saw this on HD-NET, back when they use to play a lot of live music shows. This song really stood out from the pack.

  • wow,

covers and remakes usually fail, and i never thought i'd see anyone cover THIS fiona apple song,

Costello, you have my full respect.

  • This is truly an amazing song!!! And a beautiful rendering of it too!! Very special, thanks so much for posting.

  • Not too many artists could really cover this song at all, but Elvis does a pretty kick ass job here.

  • Hot damn!

Does VH1 do anything like this anymore?

Does VH1 remember having done anything like this?

What was the occasion? And what was this?

  • He is able to make this fit his style very well but Fiona's version is far better. It is not that different in arrangement, but the words drip from her tounge in a way Elvis will never find. Whomever writes the song holds the advantage of meaning. She is the only one who knows where every note of this song comes from.

  • @Malzarin both gives different vibes; but I do feel that Fiona version was more melancholic.

  • I have to admit it's kind of strange to say that a man singing a song is beautiful but I don't know how else to describe this. Almost as hauntingly beautiful as Fiona's version of I Want You.

  • @givingbirthtoastone Yeah, It literally gave me chills.

  • love this version!!!!!!

  • no me gusto no tiene gracia la cancion cantada por el.

  • @caalfaro A mi si me gustó, le pone feeling...saludos!!!

  • ha ha ha ha.. the end is so funny! Fiona is like a little girl there. Love her :)

  • I was hesitant about listening to this, because I Know is one of my favourite Fiona Apple songs, but this is really wonderful, I think he did a brilliant job.

  • fiona sings this song with fragility; costello's version comes off too strong, in my opinion.

  • I was with him until the end, but adding the "I'll Know" at the end ruined it for me. The beauty of that song to me is the absence of the expected "I'll Know" at the end to tie it all up. I have no issue with singers altering phrasing for their own voice/touch whatever, he did it well, but I guess in the situation being sung about, it's the uncertainty that is the key element. Maybe he added it because it works better live?

  • @DiamondDuck agreed the lack of "I'll Know" is basically the equivalent to a diminished chord. no matter how many times i hear the (original) song, i will always add it in my head. however, it does sort of sound better in concert, and he did do an incredible job at covering it

  • It seems completely random to me, but I wondered how well Springsteen could do this one. Now I'm off to search for his covers. lol

  • Sorry, I'm the biggest Elvis fan in the world but this version just doesn't come near to Fiona's original.

  • chills, from fiona and elvis. what more could you ask for?

  • one of my favorite fiona songs of all time

    he did a GREAT job

  • I'm soooo attached to the original, the sensuality and passion that comes from Fiona is out of this world, but I have to say his version is a great interpretation, a real artist like him is going to do a song on his own way, not an exact replica of the original, finally my favorite part was her reaction to it at the end, she's like a happy little child!!!!

    I LOVE FIONA!!

  • i actually prefer her way to perform this but he really did a great job

  • Her reaction at the end is so sweet it has me smiling and laughing. Must be a thrill to have one of your songs performed by one of the greats.

  • @lagunaalbums well, she already is one of the greats...

  • lo maximo

  • When I have found this, I was thinking that I will not like it, because I'm a huge fan of Fiona Apple, but the truth is... this is a GREAT GREAT cover.

I love both versions, just... special

  • (Elvis + Fiona) = (peanut butter + chocolate).

I mean... come on! They are musically meant for each other.

  • GREAT cover!

  • great version of a great song!

  • Does anyone know where to download a good audio copy of this?

  • Why does it have to be Elvis or Fiona? i think Elvis brings something different to this; I love both versions.

I was there that night - it nearly brought me to tears and I remember Fiona jumping for joy afterwards.

  • Elvis is fantastic here, as always. But then I love Fiona, too!

  • chatropolis is where Elvis hangs, I know REock it Declan.

  • la versión de fiona es hermosa, pero el cover de Elvis es mejor, mucho mejor/ Fiona's version is beautiful but Elvis cover is better...so much

  • i actually like how he sings it...

  • This version's nice... But he isn't feelin' it as Fiona does... he's singin' with his voice not with his heart...

  • I adore Fiona. Elvis made this into a kind of Prom-night slow dance song..which is kind of sweet! ;-)

  • It was pretty good although I found myself drifting during his performance. It is one of my favorite songs by Fiona... no one can out perform her.

  • he fucked up a lot of the better melodies.

  • Wow, Elvis has still got it! I'm still partial to Fiona's version, but this is amazing.

  • um. fiona is better. but i don't really like his twangy voice. PROPS PROPS PROPS to artists supporting fiona apple.

  • Fiona isn't anywhere near "better" than Elvis Costello.

  • well it's really a matter of opinion at leas as far as this song goes, fiona's original is better.

  • Fantastic!

  • I think this is the best I've ever heard Elvis sing. I love the original, but this version is fantastic too.

  • This example of music only goes to show that it's not about age or generation, it's about talent! And these two artist are as talented as they come!

  • Elvis is timeless. He hits that high vibrato and delivers. What a class act.

  • AWESOME

    ]

  • I wish Fiona would do something with Eddie Vedder, I think that would be an awesome duo

  • Here here! From your mouth to God's ears. :) haha

  • the correct expression is "hear, hear" . . . and yes. I agree with your sentiment. That would be a duo that would make me wet.

  • lol

  • you like eddies solo album into the wild?

  • i think its incredible

  • Great version.

  • HE is the absolute best. so is SHE. 2 best artists out there performing each others stuff..amazing.

  • omg i love his voice

  • a great song

  • ahhh well nothing EVER beatst he original...

  • That's not true. Check out Fiona Apple's performance of "after you've gone" and the original. I think you'll agree that hers is way better.

  • I agree, and while it's hard to compare the two, her version of 'across the universe' is fantastic.

  • Holy shit! Thank you for posting this. I've been trying to find this clip for ages!

  • amazing.

  • Love that Elvis ended it with the "I Know"...whereas Fiona left it to much poetic ambiguity, Elvis took the cocky side, lol. I do think he did an amazing job on this perfectly written song.

  • I had no idea he did this!!! she must have felt so amazed that he was doing one of her songs. I still do prefer her version, though. But not much can beat songs off of my second favorite album of all time, When The Pawn... =]

  • I had no idea Elvis Costello could do such a wonderful song such justice. I think they should hang out more and make music the way it should be done. What a rare, beautiful collaboration. Well done!

  • I like this cover!!!!!!!

  • also "lipstick vogue" and "episode of blonde"

  • Wow,.. just wow. I love EC's music and I also love Fiona's. That they obviously love each others music so much is almost enough to give one faith that the world makes sense.

  • can someone recommend some good songs, besides "allison"

  • "New Lace Sleeves"

    "Shipbuilding"

    "Beyond Belief"

    "Little Triggers"

    "Stranger In The House"

  • Almost Blue, Accidents will happen (actually the whole Armed Forces album), Watching the detectives , Man out of time ...

  • I think Elvis Costello is brilliant!! Great video dear!! Cheers

    Luvs

    Natasha

    xoxo

  • I rather Fiona ¡¡¡

  • I love both. It's a beautiful work.

  • great original, great cover

  • I'm an Elvis Costello fan but I'm also a Fiona fan (more so).

I prefer the original. Partially because it closes "When the pawn..." and is amazing when taken in context with the rest of the album.

Plus I've got a thing for female singers ;)

    Great job by Elvis though.

  • he says the words at the end that fiona never had to say. great touch to this awesome cover though!

  • holy sweet fuck.

    i cant believe this.

    amazing.

  • This is a favorite song of mine and Fiona's version is very good...it is just that Elvis hits this song hard..he is an amazing talent.Fiona even likes his version.

  • Hot...I am a huge Fiona fan but they seem to do each others songs fabulously...

  • Elvis' voice just gets better with age, though I'm not sure if it's his age or mine.

  • elvis costello is an amazing talent.

  • Nice, but i definitely prefer the original.

  • Definitely a great cover. I think it's way diferent than Fiona's own, but lives it up for the spirit. Altough i hate the so-called "new ending". In the original version, i think Fiona omits sayin' "i will" 'cause it's obvious and it's more subtle.

  • he's saying "i'll know" not "i will"

  • He finished the lyric by adding "I will" at the end which is the obvious thing to do but it ties the song up much better then her own version.

I bet she was jumping up and down after hearing the new ending.

  • I'm pretty sure he was just saying "I'll know"...

  • actually, she jumped up and down onto the stage to give Elvis a hug after the song

  • yes...yes...yes...damn this is a great version!!!!!!

  • elvis rules

  • I hate when people re-do songs and screw with the timing of lyrics. They put emphasis on different words and shorten others to put their own "touch" on it. But it makes it IMPOSSIBLE to sing along with.

  • Listen a few more times to get the phrasing. That is what great singers do.

  • OMG!! I love his version of this sooooo sooooo soooo much, I love Fiona and Costello and this is just sooo fucking great!

  • that's such a pitty we only have ONE video of fiona herself singing this song around.

he was spectacular, but i prefer fiona. <3

  • omg that was glorious

  • i've watched several live performances of hers doing this song, and Elvis kicked it up to an entirely different level. i like her, but Elvis is King. She's jumping because he just sung it the way she wrote it. fantastic.

  • UGGHHH..."I know" is like...one of my all time favorite songs...he just killed it for me.

She covers him better than he does her :P

  • Two of my favorite artists ... wow. Agreed, Fiona is seldom spied so giddy. The anti-Ds must be kicking in, or it's just that she's so stoked that Elvis rocked her song so sultry. She's hilarious live ... definitely a manic, but oh so hot and talented.

  • Simply amazing...this is so incrediby beautiful. What a magnificent cover by Elvis. I don't like many "soft" songs, but this one by Fiona is like a deep heat massage for the soul.

  • This stuff is solid gold. Great to see them on their game still.

  • I totally agree with MightyTiny. Fiona Apple is an absolutely amazing songwriter, and has a beautiful voice to complement her words. And, unlike some songwriters (like Jewel), she actually improves with age.

  • ooooh how cute was fiona jumping and being so happy....mr costello did a decent job

  • i love it but i wish it was harder in the "baby" parts

it's just such an intense song I fuck*ng love Fiona but he still did it justice

  • not underrated.

    Its foolish to say so.

He IS appreciated by those who know exceptional talent.

    'nuff said

  • And you can use my skin to bury your secrets in....one of Fiona most beautiful lines....just sweet...love this song

  • And you can use my skin to bury your secrets in... de lo mejor, Elvis lo hace MUY bien!!!!

  • cool, cool. me gusta.

  • Awesome Awesome Awesome. I think this one of the best written songs by F.A and Elvis really paid it hommage.

  • This is spectacular. Elvis is one of the most under-rated singers around.

  • True - Elvis has an instantly recognizeable voice, though it may be slightly an aquired taste; he's better known and respected as a songwriter. Fiona on the other hand, is much a victim of her early media image as a petulant teen, which is why she's quite under-rated as a songwriter. This is, as Costello says, a great song.

  • I always loved the songs but it took me several live shows to get used to his voice as it was in the early 80's. He is much better live today.

  • He's got great control of his voice.

  • On another look at this it sounds a lot better than I thought previously. I think it's just hard to see anyone cover a Fiona song, but he did pretty good. I think he got the feeling across well.

  • I totally agree with you on it being hard to see anyone cover a Fiona song. I loved the softness of her voice in the original, but I also like the new flavour he brings to it.

  • That was pretty awesome. :)
