Man, Randy was just so fluid and smooth - what a huge inspiration he was to those of us that were kids learning to play guitar in the 80s. Obviously still is today too! Please check out my video lessons on how to play the solos... I just posted them :)
Bam! Fuck..Randy was so amazing no in the world can play as fast as he can, he's seriously got bullet fingers. Rudy is wicked on the bass! Ozzy had a wide ass smile on his face the whole time lol
other people might im crazy but i dont like zakk wyldee.. randy rhoads was soo much betterr i wont even go to a concert for them anymore cause i'd much rather sit here and listen to this
Randy is the best. This is classic stuff. I remember hearing Crazy train and not knowing who it was, and thinking it couldn't have been ozzy since black sabbath had a new singer, was totally confused. Then when I heard about Ozzy with Randy had tickets to see him in Lousiville. They kept the show, but it was NIght Rangers guitarits who played. It was ok, but not the same. I wanted to see Randy of course.. RIP Randy..
I've always been confused on the lineups.O.K. so we have Lee Kersleake,Bob Daisley on both "Blizzard" "Diary" albums. But the tours they had Rudy and Tommy. And why does Ozzy hav such a problem with Lee and Bob D.Could you imagine if this "After Hours" show would hav included "Beleiver", "No Bone Movies", "Steal Away the Night" etc. etc..Would love to see Randy perform them.
There is no need to compare Randy to zakk, jake or Gus. He's better than all of them! Randy is waaay better than jake, randy can play Gus's solo's with his feet, and zakk got all he knows from Randy. Randy forever
That's a 1972 Gibson Les Paul Custom is it not? I am fortunate enough to own a 2007 Gibson Les Paul Supreme in Alpine White with gold hardware and DiMarzio pickups. I bought a flashy LP because of Randy of course....I love rockin' those Marshalls.... =)
im just reading off the rails by rudy sarzo , such an amazing read and plenty of stuff about randy rhoads including the accident which is incredibly detailed.
There is still more footage of Randy... There was some on Entertainment Tonight back in early 1982... They played a bit of Over The Mountain, Mr Crowley, and Crazy Train... They might have taped the whole show... Think... Footage of Randy playing a 14 song setlist... Type on Ozzy Osbourne Rare Randy Rhoads Leg Lift and you will find portions of it along with a little Ozzy interview...
I've always loved the "After Hours" session because it's just raw. Aldridge starts things off great here - what a great drummer! Sarzo does what he's told IMO, and okay. Ozzy is hapless and has a few good moments. Randy...hehee...he opened doors for everyone. He wasn't some "God" as people make him to be. But I really would have liked to have known this guy. EVH was always so arrogant and that's the diff between Eddie and Randy. This guy was just good!
@mlmr11 Well how about we let record sales tell the story? We will use total sales till around 2000 as the scale. It just so happens that Randy played for the first 2 and Jake on the second 2.
Blizzard of Oz - 4 million
Diary of a Madman - 3 million
Bark at the moon - 3 million
Ultimate Sin - 2 million
It would seem that the people who buy the music prefer Randy on guitar as do I. I would also note that Randy's sales figures reached those numbers by 1997 whereas Jake's took until 2000.
@mlmr11 How was RR "over-marketed"? Other than some photos, "after hours", and a crappy Chicago video......what else do you have? Blizzard and Diary. That's all you have, unless you add some Quiet Riot. Do you even know WTF you're talking about? A cross between Howe and EVH? Whaaaa? How was Randy Rhoads ever "over-marketed"? That's just a dumb-shit call, maybe just ignorance on your part?
@DickLodge68 I love ruffling the feathers of you flying idiots I really do. For the most part Randy worshipers can't be honest with themselves. The Church of Randy is a sacred institution .
Go look at all the stuff they're selling in his name 28 years posthumous.
Come on man be intellectually honest for once.
I know it's hard for religious zealots to admit their bible might have a corrupt script or two but really ...I thought we were supposed to be in the days of enlightenment ?
@mlmr11 Wow, now I'm a Flying Idiot! Yeah baby! Sure, some try to sell RR shirts or whatever but that isn't marketing someone like Hannah Montana or whomever. So maybe you should be intellectually honest about this. Walk down the street and ask people to name a famous guitarist. I bet most say EVH or Hendrix. RR would be very far down the list, not because of his abilities but because he was fairly unknown...and still is. So how is that "over-marketed"? How am I a religious zealot?
@japrules1 Does it really matter? It looks like standard Gibson humbuckers. I doubt RR would have changed them because that was the Les Paul he always wanted.
@japrules1 Yes there are, then there is no info they he change them sometime down the road. The only changes on record was that the nut on the neck, the plate round the toggle switch and his name engrave on the pick guard. And the guitar was original white when purchase. It cured to a yellow color over time.
@DickLodge68 The LP. Sometimes it takes a lots of time for wood to cure and sometimes it doesn't. There are lot of factors how a guitar can cure over time. Wood and paint can be best friends or worst enemies. But, the facts are that Les Paul never make a creme/yellow back in '74, as far as any record showing. Second, the guitar was in fact purchase white, shows in photos in Quiet Riot and on stage when he is playing.
Not to argue with you, but the fact its yellow, that guitar is priceless.
@DickLodge68 : it all depends.....I would say a general rule for white paint finishes to amber take 10 yrs or so. One factor is the finish used to seal the paint, or in the paint. A heavy oil base finish will cause ambering, water based (which really didn't come onto market till late 90's,my guess) typically will not amber.
The fills Randy throws in at such lightning speed that it hardly even seems the rythm part was interrupted are still stunning to me - I particularly like the ones at 1:05 and 1:50 - and this setup was so low-tech by today's standards - just goes to show , nothing beats the old "peanut butter & jelly" of rock ; Les Paul guitar and a Marshall stack.....oh yeah.
Despite Ozzy's vocal hiccups - this show is pure MAGIC - Randy on that fearsome yellow Les Paul ....... eegads ...... has it ever been any better than this ?
What a show ! After all this time Randy's playing still gives me goosebumps. This After Hours recording is simply phenominal despite poor Ozzy's mic troubles.
Well, I must say Ozzy does not hire flunkies. He ONLY hires top-guns. Tommy Aldrige-Monster, Rudy Sarzo-massive, and MISTER Rock and Roll (Get it? R.R., Randy Rhoads) all in the team; Blizzard (and, I do mean cold) of Ozz.
Man....so glad to have been able to grow up seeing such talented musicians. What a gift and what a short time we all had to enjoy it. At least we had that short time. What an amazing band Ozzy had behind him!
I'm currently reading Rudy Sarzo's book about his time in Ozzy's band. What an amazing read! He and Tommy make a great rhythm section, and Randy's guitar lays perfectly on top of it all. Daisly, Rhoads and Kerslake where one of the writers of Blizzard of Oz along with Ozzy of course . This is Rudy Sarzo(Bass) and Tommy Aldridge(Drums) , they play Old school and they more better in live, they were in the Tribute Almbum. Ozzy still missed this tunes you can read some articles of this..
Thank you for posting this video man....yeah what a line-up Ozzy was still lucky to have band like that (w/ respect to Kerslake and Daisly). And its only one of the last videos of Randy Rhoads an inspiration and a good man.
@FalseWitnessScoob Damn rite! He was layin it down as Randy was tearin it up. These guys were talented musicians. Ozzy was privileged to have these guys backing him.
Blizzard and Diary were recorded within 8 months of each other. Diary was recorded during a break on the England leg of the Blizzard tour. Dasley & Kerslake were fired just before the United States leg of the Blizzard tour where Rudy Sarzo & Tommy Aldridge were hired. Rudy & Tommy never recorded with Ozzy only played live. There is still ongoing legal battles between Daisley, Kerslake & the Osbournes. It's a mess obviously.
Nobody ain't got nothing on Rhoads, this live performance shows how great a musician he is. Everything he played on the albums he could play live, no studio magic. He was the magic.. He was dedicated to his craft. These present day fags the music industry keep trying to shove down our throughts, could learn alot from Rhoads.
Bass guitar Quiet Riot , Ozzy , Whitesnake , YJ Malmsteen , DIO ( R.I.P. till we meet in the end ) Blue Oyster Cult He played with the very best of em' I am just finishing up his book Off the Rails A TRIBUTE to RANDY W. RHOADS about touring with The Oz Don't try any of this kiddies . This was a different time Rock on !!!
Bass guitar Quiet Riot , Ozzy , Whitesnake , Dio , Blue Oyster Cult He believed in the power of heavy metal and Rudy Sarzo played
with the best of the them . Just finishing his book Off the Rails A TRIBUTE TO RANDY W. RHOADS about touring with The Oz don't get any crazy ideas from this one kiddies . This was a different time Rock on ...
So I am confused by about Bob Daisley and Lee Kerslake, they were in the band at first but got replaced? Yet they still helped work on studio albums? I don't get it someone help me out. Daisley is credited on like 4 Ozzy albums.
The magic just ain't there with this lineup Lee & Bob complimented each others playing. The only other time i saw that kinda magic in ozzy again was with Rob & Mick.
From '79 to early in '81 Bob Daisley was on bass and Lee Kerslake was the drummer. They played on both the "Blizzard..." and "Diary..." albums which were both recorded before this lineup promoted the first album as it was my first concert ever. Just sayin'.
man .what an all star band master rhoades tommy and sarzo fuck bad ass those guys were all masters at playing i wish ozzy could do a tour or album with tommy and rudy again.
@amelbo Fun fact about Rudy Sarzo. When Randy Rhoads died, Rudy was fired because he couldn't come up with any decent bass lines when recording with Jake E. Lee. He sucks THAT bad. Ozzy had to bring back Bob Daisley to play brilliant bass (and write the lyrics Ozzy was also incapable of...) on Bark at the Moon.
Tommy A., though, on the other hand, is a very good drummer. Not better than Lee Kerslake, though.
we ALL know ozzy was stoned, but i think they all went back after the show and drank a little, hah, probably what made them say, "ah what the hell, lets do after hours" long live Randy
Ozzys voice was out of wack on the suicide solution after hours also, around 1:48 were Randy missfrets a note flat and laughs when nobody notices exept Rudy.LMAO Randy King of Metal!!!!
true, except randy was right on except for 1 note in suicide solution, I guess guitar doesn't take as much endurance as drums, at least Ozzy tried, just wish there was better professional footage of Randy
oh man can you imagine all of the work Randy would have come up with? He was gonna go on to get a classical guitar degree at UCLA, just imagine what guitar solos would sound like now. Rap might not even exist! He was rising in greatness when he died, he could have been the next best, next to Hendrix. He arguably was in his short life! Only difference is, like you said, Randy was human, and I really don't know what Hendrix was (part god maybe)
@goodygoody23 Yes I agree,Im not a huge fan of jimi...I like mitch....the one thing I do like about jimi is how he played a song as a whole,he was a very good song writer, and his solos just flowed so nicely, not sure if u ever heard Marty Friedman play a solo...but Randy would have been somthing like Marty...check out tornado of souls by mega deth...thats Martys biggest solo. Cheers;-)
yeah and Sharon is a bitch so we'll never see any of it. I can sort of understand why Delores isn't releasing it, though I would want my son to be fully known for how great of a musician he was
I'm probably gonna make a 10 minute or so masterpiece tribute for Randy, I already did a thing where I made the tonight solo not fade out, but I really want to do something special for him
oh Ozzy was STONED during this performance, not that he isn't all the time. This show had just about the slowest version of Mr. Crowley I have ever heard, they were drugged out completely, except Randy of course.
is there a dvd for this concert because the like 3 or 4 videos i see on this concert are the best

So I am confused by about Bob Daisley and Lee Kerslake, they were in the band at first but got replaced? Yet they still helped work on studio albums? I don't get it someone help me out. Daisley is credited on like 4 Ozzy albums.
vaibanez17 1 year ago
@vaibanez17 im pretty sure ozzy used alot of different musicians, some in studio and some live. Bob Daisley is probably just a studio player.

Rudy, Tommy, Randy...FTW!!!!

This is a good song, I even think it is better than I don't Wanna Stop. Ozzy's stuff from the early eighties is the best.

What a nerd Ozzy was back then with the oh-so-nerdy dangling fringe.

I think he tuned a string mid solo!? and there are just not enough shots of Randy in any of these after Hours clips.

@infinidominion Type in John5 behind the nut, and you will see what he did, bent string behind the nut.

@gblespaul interesting

@gblespaul Yeah, if you do a pinch harmonic up top, you can REALLY make it scream if you do that. Takes some practice though.

The magic just ain't there with this lineup Lee & Bob complimented each others playing. The only other time i saw that kinda magic in ozzy again was with Rob & Mick.

I Ozzy and his ban from 1979-1982. They were the best. Ozzy on vocals, Randy on guitar, RIP, Rudy on bass, and Tommy on drums. This is his best band.
buzzsaw177 1 year ago
From '79 to early in '81 Bob Daisley was on bass and Lee Kerslake was the drummer. They played on both the "Blizzard..." and "Diary..." albums which were both recorded before this lineup promoted the first album as it was my first concert ever. Just sayin'.

man .what an all star band master rhoades tommy and sarzo fuck bad ass those guys were all masters at playing i wish ozzy could do a tour or album with tommy and rudy again.
amelbo 2 years ago 23
Me too! Can you imagine?! I'd put Joe Holmes in on guitar since he was Randy's student for a time. Who better?
Mysterwright 2 years ago
@amelbo Actually the all star band was Ozzy, Randy, Lee, and Bob...the real Blizzard of Ozz.
SecularTrend 1 year ago
@amelbo Fun fact about Rudy Sarzo. When Randy Rhoads died, Rudy was fired because he couldn't come up with any decent bass lines when recording with Jake E. Lee. He sucks THAT bad. Ozzy had to bring back Bob Daisley to play brilliant bass (and write the lyrics Ozzy was also incapable of...) on Bark at the Moon.
Tommy A., though, on the other hand, is a very good drummer. Not better than Lee Kerslake, though.

we ALL know ozzy was stoned, but i think they all went back after the show and drank a little, hah, probably what made them say, "ah what the hell, lets do after hours" long live Randy
vatscove 2 years ago
Best footage of randy out there.
paraglidermx 2 years ago
and Ozzy's vocals sucked during it. Sharon is keeping the proffesional footage of Randy locked up in Osbourne Estate, hate the bitch.
goodygoody23 2 years ago
Ozzys voice was out of wack on the suicide solution after hours also, around 1:48 were Randy missfrets a note flat and laughs when nobody notices exept Rudy.LMAO Randy King of Metal!!!!
paraglidermx 2 years ago
after hours was done RIGHT after a show, so of course his voice was wack, and yeah, he barred on chord 5 instead of 6, i think rudy caught it
vatscove 2 years ago
@yeaparaglidermx . I caught that as well lol. I was laughin 2
buzzsaw177 1 year ago
after hours was done RIGHT after a concert, so of course they all were slow and messing up
vatscove 2 years ago
true, except randy was right on except for 1 note in suicide solution, I guess guitar doesn't take as much endurance as drums, at least Ozzy tried, just wish there was better professional footage of Randy
goodygoody23 2 years ago
@goodygoody23 Just goes to show even the greatest in the world are human...Randy would have been so awesome today...R.I.P.Randy God Bless you man;-(
paraglidermx 2 years ago
oh man can you imagine all of the work Randy would have come up with? He was gonna go on to get a classical guitar degree at UCLA, just imagine what guitar solos would sound like now. Rap might not even exist! He was rising in greatness when he died, he could have been the next best, next to Hendrix. He arguably was in his short life! Only difference is, like you said, Randy was human, and I really don't know what Hendrix was (part god maybe)
goodygoody23 2 years ago
@goodygoody23 Yes I agree,Im not a huge fan of jimi...I like mitch....the one thing I do like about jimi is how he played a song as a whole,he was a very good song writer, and his solos just flowed so nicely, not sure if u ever heard Marty Friedman play a solo...but Randy would have been somthing like Marty...check out tornado of souls by mega deth...thats Martys biggest solo. Cheers;-)
paraglidermx 2 years ago
all of it is copyrighted by Sharon Osbourne, and Randy's mother. After hours owns this footage, so they have the right to distribute it
vatscove 2 years ago
yeah and Sharon is a bitch so we'll never see any of it. I can sort of understand why Delores isn't releasing it, though I would want my son to be fully known for how great of a musician he was
goodygoody23 2 years ago
true, even if he is dead, you know theyll still try anything to get money
vatscove 2 years ago
yep never have liked Sharon because of that
goodygoody23 2 years ago
people are so greedy these days..... i swear. thank god for the roadies and after hours, or else we would probably have no footage of him
vatscove 2 years ago
it pisses me off, that money is more important than promoting the acknowledgement of a suberb guitarist's skill, I wanna punch Sharon really bad
goodygoody23 2 years ago
i agree 100%, she could live off royalties for the rest of her life but she aint happy enough, very sad on randy's part
vatscove 2 years ago
she's gonna die a sad person, worried more about money than helping out the person she admittidly loved
goodygoody23 2 years ago
She'll have a nice casket, but i garuntee you no1 other than the osbourne's will attend her funeral
vatscove 2 years ago
I hope so, poor braindead Ozzy is trapped in a marriage with her

if ozzy didnt get into drugs, he'd probably still be dying his hair blonde, and wouldnt have married her

ahhh if only

I'm probably gonna make a 10 minute or so masterpiece tribute for Randy, I already did a thing where I made the tonight solo not fade out, but I really want to do something special for him

oh Ozzy was STONED during this performance, not that he isn't all the time. This show had just about the slowest version of Mr. Crowley I have ever heard, they were drugged out completely, except Randy of course.
