I've been there and it was a fantastic evening. Jason is absolutely incredible and I hope he'll get through all the shit that is following at the Moment. My best wishes to moon cat keep on rock'n kid ;-)
I didn't even hear the audience clap while he was in his lead riff, which was spectacular. He's got incredible abilities, but stage presence, interaction with the audience is non existent. I don't think he can identify with anyone. Everyone needs to be able to identify with Jason. Performing is an interaction with the audience. This is more like a circus act. Spectacle.
@surferpan I don't understand your point. The playing was awesome and I was totally in a trance while listening to it. If the audience can't see that, they are the one with a problem.
@surferpan Sorry - but you're SO offbase it's amazing. You obviously have never once been to a JR & NB show. Most of us commenting have and know JUST how the interaction between Jason, the band and the audience took place. You're blathering just to feel important and no doubt you've convinced yourself you're correct. You're not. You have absolutely NO knowledge of what went on between Jason and his audience and the band. Each played/interacted beautifully together. Clueless.
Like to see him play with the band, instead of the band backing him and his antics up. But, since he is the draw I suppose the band does whatever Jason wants the band to do. They just let him go on his tangents. Up and down the scale and playing his overblows with a vengeance. He's got good technique, but the speed or adrenaline has taken over his performances. Solo artist. Doesn't need a regular band. They must be over it. Just travel town to town, side show and pay a local band to play chords
Jason needs to play music and stop being a spectacle. It's gone to his head, it's in his performance etc.. he's got talent, but it's overshadowed by his extreme abilities. If he could harness that power, energy and put it in a method performance that people can enjoy, dance to without feeling like they are in a circus I could dig it. Sure, it's good for the first hour or two, until you figure out his gig. He's about pushing the envelope with his abilities. like to see him sing, play and dance.
@ramblinoutlaw there are a whole series of the performances in Germany - maybe 5 or 6 videos? look in the right margin and 'load more suggestions'. When the band was there they taped a lot of the show (very professionally). It still doesn't comprise what was a typical JR & New Blood performance, but the audience was great (allowed them to be heard), and the photography is brilliant. Some of the best footage ever of the Band before they broke up.
totally agree with you, people will remember when you touch their heart, supersonic mechanics is not reaching people, they are are impressed but not touched where it counts.
@pearlman21 You've never seen him play - yet here you are spouting off about something you have no knowledge about. Always amazes me. Small men with small minds. You watch a few vids and presume to think they're the whole performance. Most of these are repeats of the same songs. The entire EVENING is 4 hours' worth of playing..with TONS of reaching people/emotional connecting - that's what people like you are clueless about and why, unless you actually were there, you'll never comprehend.
That is awesome! I have enjoyed your videos for some time as well as many of the tips and lessons you have posted. I am getting ready to go to my first open Mic night soon. You are a great inspiration to the instrument! Keep pushing the limits!
Personally I don't get off on that fast technical stuff. I just can't see the point of doing thousands of triplets and scales for minute upon minute. It's like listening to a 5 minute drum solo. The slow bit at the beginning was excellent. Live music is about communication with the audience and most (apart from the harp players) will drop out if you go on too long. I appreciate that it's clever stuff though but just not my bag. Why play 10,000 notes when 3 will do the job?
@tenbarsteam I don't think music is about "doing the job". Music should be sometimes surprising and open, and it can't be if theres a "right way" to do it. Playing slow and playing fast are diferenft expressions that say different things, some may not like one or the other, but for me is what music is about.
I think Jason does that, he just expressing himself in different ways, and I really enjoy it.
(What is true is that some people just play fast to show off, but this is not the case).
@tenbarsteam If you think of this as only 'technical stuff' then you're missing what that audience is getting. You've obviously never seem him Live to feel the incredible tension, building up of power, passion and emotion he puts into his music. He 'communicates' with them just fine, trust me. If you're not there then you don't know (although how you miss the sounds coming from this particular audience escapes me). Nobody 'drops out'. It's not your bag? fine. No biggie. The rest of us love it.
@ElizabethGS you have a healthy imagination, listen to Portnoy, don't get me wrong Jason is truly one of the best on the planet, but overplays and doesnt stop and feel, as much as he could, lotsa pain for sure! Jason Ricci, Carlos Del Junco and Howard Levy in the same club! Olympic atheletes on harp!
@pearlman21 Healthy imagination? you're a trip. And obviously someone who's never seen Jason in person. I have. I also know him - so there's nothing to 'imagine'. Lumping him, Carlos and Howard all together proves my point: you're clueless. They're all as UNlike each other as any harp players could be. You've never sat through a 4-hour Jason Ricci & New Blood show. Those of us who DID dozens of times could tell you what that's like but you still wouldn't get it. Closed minds and all that.
@StefanosArapoglou Jason is a really good teacher. And he's working towards going back to that. He has quite a few videos on youtube already. After almost every show - and each time he'd play at a harmonica convention - the BEST part for him would be to sit down afterwards with harp players and just talk, or even play together. At our SPAH 2009 convention his teaching table had 30 people crowded around - most others had a handful. Very charismatic, all the young guys want to play just like him.
"Blues Harmonica Player " is the worldwide stage for Blues harp players to share their videos and ideas. We need guys like you who can play, upload your videos, help manage our forums, and be part of a movement that will go worldwide which will be backed by some of the best blues players we can find.
