I know ddrummers who have a standard 5 peice set, and barely use the high hat.

its more for fun, bozzio does solos, so having an excessive ammount of toms allows for a variety of sounds.

I'm sad to see so many ignorant comments, but rather focus on the positive, great video, very inspiring and entertaining. 15roland 15 is right, bozzio uses non specific pitch melodies based on chromatic and diatonic tunings in his expressions, it's about creating melodies with drums and cymbals. Too bad we can't all go to great music schools like Berkely to rise to another level. Cheers.

It is a very good piece of music. I wouldn't call him a drummer, he is definitely a percussionist. The distinction being that he requires a large range of instruments to play his music on,in a recital form,such as an orchestral percussionist requires a whole section of different instruments. Great Drummers how ever, in my book, can create equally fantastic sounds, and rhythms, but with only a 3 piece. Both should be celebrated certainly,but not assumed, categorised and critiqued as the same

Great stuff, I really like it... but I think he needs a much bigger kit. Even my granma plays on a bigger kit. He needs more drums, more cymbals, it's way too small. If he had maybe 50000 toms, 5000 kick drums and 30000 cymbals around him it might be enough. That way he could have a different drum for every note played.

Damn, 50k isn't even close. I was just talking with my drum instructor today and he said that a bunch of guys down at the other Family Music downtown decided to add up how much Bozzio's set would be if you where to try and buy it or match it... they ended up with $110,000. Now that's insane.

Wackerman is holding down the rhythmic part of it(dynamics etc. etc.), while Bozzio is "exploring" the melodic, and harmonic parts of the piece. Hence, a private converation. Once again, Bozzio isn't about chops in these clips. Forget about fucking chops! You want chops pick up all his work with Zappa,UK, Missing Persons, and The Brecker Brothers. You'll get chops out the ass, and then some.

That's why you're a pianist...lol...no offense. First off Terry gets that kit for free...for free, and he has a people who set it up for him. Not that you're interested but if you were to buy, or get Terry's 3 set volume, "Melodic Drumming and the Ostinato" you would understand why he wants that many drums. When Terry played on the "Zappa plays Zappa" tour he broke his kit completely down. He had one bass drum, and a double bass pedal. Nothing like what you see above.

Chad is hitting the drums and cymbals with some meaning, very precisely and with great subtelty. He is definitely one of the best out there...but Bozzio just doesn't convince me.

the reason, well, one of the reasons that bozzio has so many drums is that he tunes his drums generally to actual notes so he can play full chromatic, and in some cases semi and microtonal scales. its not just to look cool ;)

Terry Bozzio is not an usual drummer.

He has invented the melodic drum playing, and so he uses that perfectly (with Zappa). Each tom is a note, and that's a great idea, nobody can imitate him (too expensive !)
