At this super bowl he was the pregame host/anchor along with 'co host' OJ Simpson and 'guest anaylst then Cowboys Coach Landry.

Frank Gifford did play-play and his partners was Joe Theisman and i think Don Meredith. This is first super bowl i remember very well.

Theisman never was a play-by play annnouncer. He was always an 'color' analyst and this telecast(the 49ers-Fish Super Bowl) was his debut as a TV analyst. ABC had just fired the lendegary Commenator Howard Cosell prior to the '84 NFL season.

Theisman was still a QB with the Redskins but his playing carrer ended the following season in 1985-86 season when he was badly injured in play by Lawerence Taylor. Theisman then began a 20-year carrer w/ ESPN before being let go coupleof years ago.

Technically, Howard Cosell resigned from "MNF" over the the Alvin Garrett/"Little Monkey" controversy a year earlier. The crew for the '84 season was Frank Gifford, Don Meredith (his last on "MNF") and O.J. Simpson. I think that the Juice wasn't getting a whole lot of rave reviews that year so Joe Theismann (the 1st active player since Jack Kemp at SBII to help call a network TV broadcast for the Super Bowl) was in the ABC booth instead.
