I think they should've just let Hopkins's character be Lecter, it seems hard to seperate two characters that are so psychologically similar in the audience's point of view. I mean, there are a LOT of people saying "Lecter is BACK!!! OmFG!" and the script writers would've made the transition for the audience much easier if they just labeled Anthony's character as "Lecter coming out of retirement".

Hopkins, great actor and I really liked this film.

One of my favorite scenes of all time is when in court it is unveiled that the arresting officer was having an affair with his wife. That and the subsequent meeting in the judges chambers where Hopkins strategy becomes clear. Good stuff.

I don't want to boast or anything, but this was one of few movies that i knew, how the bad guy was going down, 30 minutes before the end. it was obvious they couldn't prosecute him on this charges (attempt of murder), they had to change the case, and after he "killed" her in the hospital, everyone could see where this story was going. LOL

Well, they did not try to keep it secret - there were hints here and there, we actually see Gosling studying some case ( we see words "double jeopardy", 'exceptions"). But they still needed evidence, or it would be new trial with the same result. It's only when he figures out the murder weapon, new trial becomes possible. And that we don't know till the very end.

Love this movie. The biggest mistake in the movie is the claim that the gun has never been fired. Every glock has 2 rounds fired through it at the factory, so you'd be hard pressed to find one that hasn't been used once!

This movie was pretty good, I enjoyed it. The only knock on it is that I doubt that Hopkin's character would be dumb enough to pull the plug. I mean, it was pretty obvious to me that if she died, they'd try him for murder. Stupid how the DA had to tip Gossling off to that too by saying, "if it makes you feel better, it was only attempted murder". Pretty lame, but I have a degree in Criminal Justice & Criminology so maybe others don't think like that.

Saw it today, and I totally agree with you 100%. Hopkins character far too briliant to overlook double jeopardy loophole, and Gossling character should have been smart enough to see it a mile away. In fact, Gossling NEVER convinced me he was this character. Like him, but he did not do this justice. Hopkins did though - his performance was stellar as always. I knew he switched guns while the cop was in the house. Overall o.k. not great.

I just saw this movie yesterday. Got it from the $5 Walmart rack, but hey it had The Gos and Hopkins in it so, I thought it might be good. But yes, I agree with you, Gosling is a good actor, but looked so 'youngish' or something wasn't deep enough with his character. Good movie, but Gos did his greatest performance EVER (so far!) in The Notebook. What can I say? THAT is a great movie. Hopkins is always good in everything he does.
