I don't have a second "Sonic & Knuckles" game cartridge, so it's impossible for me to test. Given other Sonic games and non-Sonic games, you'll only ever get one possible "Blue Sphere" level. Sonic 1 allows for who knows how many possible (I'm guessing 65,535).
No kidding. I'm definitely with you. After Sonic & Knuckles was released, Sonic went far downhill. I actually wished that there was a "Sonic Builders" or something where players can create their own classic-style 2D games (only, without the annoying 24 px/fr scrolling speed limit (16 for Sonic 2 and earlier)).
@ulillillia Right, like my boyfriend likes the newer Sonics, I like the older ones because even though in stages you didn't know how the hell you got from Point A to Point B [except in Sonic 3, cause when you beat Robotnik they show how Sonic got to the next stage] it was still fun to play, the 3D ones are kinda weird, and you're absolutely right. It would be good to have a game like that. :D
@xxStaroftheShow it was the same for sonic & knux because it showed you how you got there it even showed how you got in on sonic 3 & knuckles but they were supposed to be one game so it makes since why :P
It works with any game, not just Sonic. However, you won't be able to play as Knuckles in anything but Sonic 2 and Sonic 3. I really wished I could play as Tails or Knuckles in Sonic 1 though. With Sonic 1, you play a game called "blue sphere", which runs on the exact same principals as Sonic & Knuckles' special stages. For all other games, there's only a single level that you can play.
I love playing around, going for high speeds, and otherwise just playing around. See the Casino Night Act 2 video segment and you'll know what I mean. That's my top favorite level in Sonic 2 and is where about 40% of my total play time is spent (25% toward Aquatic Ruin 2 (drowning Tails), 25% toward Chemical Plant 2 (drowning Tails), and the other 10% toward normal game play).
@ulillillia hahahahahahahaha i love killing tails as well. on metropolis zone i always force him to fall off the spinning nut thing and thing come down and crush him with it. if you do it fast enough then he goes flying off the screen. it's great although you probably do that to.
Wow your saying your fast on this level? somebody did it in 19 seconds (yeah your not doing it for a world record) but you should really not put getting great speed because you took nearly 6:00 minutes....
By fast, I don't mean completing levels in as short of a time as possible, I mean overall movement speed, more pixels moved for every frame. With Super Knuckles in the second level, I can otherwise max his speed at 24 px/fr - scrolling caps at 16 px/fr for reference.
I have completed it in something like 35 seconds though that was about 6ish years ago. In my case here, I'm just doing what I normally do - use the glide hop trick to get as much height as possible then take a big fall for as much pixels-per-frame speed as possible. Casino Night 2 is an excellent demonstration of the speed - 24 px/fr.
The great thing about the old Sonic games is that it has so many cool places to discover and explore, whereas the new ones have 2 paths to the end of the level at most.
... and the new ones lack Tails abuse (DX excluded), debug (oh where did the fun go to!?), and the extreme falling speeds (that's a lot of fun, if the scrolling speed didn't max out).
I only like Knuckles in the 2D games because he is the fastest (not Sonic), thanks to the glide-hop. The 3D Sonic games don't have glide-hops and thus, Sonic is the best.
I don't use emulators, rather, I play it using the real console and a TV tuner. In my case, I'm playing Sonic Mega Collection (you should've noticed this when you saw the first few seconds of this video - it was also to demonstrate that I wasn't using any cheats.).
You're probably focused on getting through levels as fast as absolutely possible. I'm focused after stunts and extreme speed, particularly the latter case.
It was originally only for the Genesis. At the time I recorded this, I didn't get any clear signal (see the "Bubsy Genesis distortions" video for what I mean), so I got this using the Gamecube's "Sonic Mega Collection". You should've seen that I had Mega Collection up at the start of this video segment (if I recall that is).
The glide hop makes for great shortcuts, when used properly. In Sonic 3 & Knuckles, you can use it to get Knuckles into Sonic's route pretty much every single time!
5:48 for the level. There's an achievement in the Xbox Arcade version to complete this in under 35 seconds, I thought I was going to see Knuckles blow it out of the water lol.
Good video. Brings back memories of the Sonic & Knuckles Cartridge....
I wasn't after rings, I was, instead, after stunts, especially great speed (didn't you notice what I did in Casino Night Act 2 - I maxed the gliding speed at 24 px/fr (scrolling maxes at 16 px/fr in this game, extremely slow and easy to get)!)
All of my videos, except the fireworks ones (due to a glitched MOV to AVI converter), have sound. Did you turn on your speakers or turn the volume up? Do you have a sound card and are the drivers installed and in working order?
This is my style of play. I perform all kinds of stunts. Robots, for Knuckles, means plenty of height and, for the fall back down, lots of speed. It's the speed that makes it most attracting. You can see me doing this often in Casino night act 2 near the start where I get Knuckles' speed to the maximum, 24 pixels per frame. See my "X's fastest" series for Sonic and Knuckles to get an idea of this (mostly in falls) or, the fastest possible, "the Metropolis endless fall glitch".
When Knuckles glides, his vertical acceleration is halved. When you fall, 1x, you gain speed more quickly. But, upon impacting the box while gliding, you're going back up at the same speed but with half the acceleration. This'll double the height and it works on many games (including the original Bubsy). "((StartSpeed+EndSpeed)/2) * ((EndSpeed-StartSpeed)/Acceleration)" is how you find the distance traveled with constant acceleration. Try 20 for Start, 10 for End, and 2 then 1 for Accel.
I call this higher jump a "glide hop". Tails in Sonic 3 has something similar, but won't go above the top of the zone and he must be invincible. It doesn't work with item boxes, but only enemies.
That's not how it works. You're allowed to make one backup copy for your own personal use. And even then in some areas you can't even play that backup copy if the original is lost or damaged.
Also, the copy has to be made by you, with your own game. Using a ROM made by someone else is against the law since you're actually playing their illegally distributed copy of the game.

ulillillia 3 years ago
Its faster because North America uses NTSC (60Hz) refresh rate, and most of the rest of the world uses PAL (50Hz).
This makes the frame rate ~12% slower. Search for 'Sonic NTSC PAL comparison' and you'll see what I mean
tanvirsaini 3 years ago
