  • I usually shave every 3 days. After 3 days the hair is long enough and I get a nice clean shave, no cuts or irritation. However, if I attempt to shave after just one day or even two days, my whole neck because irritated and for some reason I get so many cuts. I never cut myself on 3 days growth, it is strange to me. Can some people just not shave every morning? What is the reason and how can I stop it?

  • Mantic have u ever come across a de razor with no combs to protect the face from complete contact from the razor? I own a vintage razor like this and man does it shave well.

  • use a straight razor

  • He must not work for a living. takes all day to shave!

  • Think you have enough cream on?

  • ill grow a beard i think:)

  • Are you using a blade in these videos? Thanks

  • Oooh Trumpers Lime Skin Food. Good stuff!

  • Hi Mantic...just wanted to let you know how good your instructions are. Using your teachings, I started wet shaving about 2 weeks ago WITH A MERKUR SLANT BAR AND FEATHER BRAND RAZORS!! I was blissfully unaware that I was supposedly in very dangerous waters until I read some comments on different shave forums regarding the slant bar and Feather razors. I think it is a testament to your great videos that I've only had one bad shave and just a few nicks(no real cuts). Keep up the good work.

  • This is so much better than Gillette's shaving series. I find myself watching this for fun as well as tips for a better shave. Thank you for all your hard work Mark. It is greatly appreciated.

  • wooow! Thank You Man!

  • Hi mantic59,

Nice videos, nice tutorial, but please if you have time, I would be very grateful if you can make shaving video about Merkur Progress like a review( 3 passes), I know it's your personal very best DE machine.

    Thank You.

  • @hardcorecrysis I will see what I can do about that!

  • Hey I bought a traditional shaving set including a DE Razor, Super Badger shaving brush not long ago. I'm using Truefitt & Hill's shaving cream and after shave balm and the shave feels great. But I have one problem, when it comes to my throat, I can't seem to find a way to shave it withour getting bumps and cuts. I've tried different shaving directions and no matter what I do I keep getting those red bumps and irritated skin. Anyone have a clue what I'm doing wrong?

  • @mattiasjoppe First be sure you are using no pressure on the razor! You also might want to experiment with using different brands of blades or try using cold water instead of warm.

  • excellent tutorial!

  • 07:09, 1 cut lol

  • When this video has more views than a Justin Beiber video, I will know true happiness.

  • if the lather isnt touching the skin.. ITS USELESS!

  • You use all of the old style things like brushes and all that, why not use a straight razor?

  • Why is the last pass XTG? I thought the last pass was suppose to be ATG?

  • Are there people (with certain skin types) who can never get a proper against the grain shave without cutting yourself? Or should proper lathering/shaving technique allow for it , regardless of skin type?

  • Great video! Thanks for sharing!

    PaceShave*com

  • I've been using the standard Gilette-in-a-can and cheap razors for years but even when my skin is smooth you can see hundreds of little black dots around my lip and chin where the long hairs I've shaved were...I don't know if this means they're all ingrown hairs? Do you think switching to a lather would eliminate this problem? I don't even have that much facial hair (can't grow a beard) but for some reason I can never rid of those dots.

  • Why does your face look like there's always some stubble?

  • 6:08 I see that nick on your chin..... how was the alum after?

  • thank god we have new age razors. imagine shaving your junk with that thing lol

  • WHAT??????

  • Now I know what to tell my dad when he complains that he'll have nothing to do all day when he retires.

  • @thedigitaldork

Tell him to get a straight razor instead.

  • Hi Mantic59

Have you ever used or heard of the real shaving company? i use their products and was just wondering if you have, if so what do you think?

    Patrick

  • sir i have a question if i shave like that menaing upwards in an hour i get break outs and idont get pimples unless i shave 2 close y is that i cant even use electric shavers wel am not sure about them but i can only shave downwards i canot shave upwards y how can i cure it i want a close shave

  • @saie000 you are probably either not rinsing your face enough after the shave or you are using the wrong angle on the razor.

  • How often do you change the blade? After every shave?

  • @Bodhizzle you change the blade when you are not getting good shaves anymore. The exact time depends on many different things. Very generally 5-6 full shaves.

  • during the second pass he shaves against the grain so this is OK as long as your careful? cause I hear people say this should be avoided

  • not traditional not cut throat here

  • 1:47..."The shave soap I'm using is widely availible in the U.S. for under $2."

Then I'm gonna take a wild guess and say you're using Barbasol. In fact, I saw it at Rite-Aid a couple weeks ago for $1.79...lol!!!

  • @vanni9283 not at all, I was using Van Der Hagen shave soap. widely available and very cheap.

  • @mantic59

Oh ok. Never heard of it.

  • How come you prefer soap and a brush over regular shaving cream?

  • Mantic, I just bought an new synthetic brush yesterday, but it smells really awkward/weird, what can I do to remove the stinky smell?

  • @adilhussain77 you can soak it in hot water with a bit of borax (the 20 mule team stuff) and it should help. ive been fortunate and havent had any problems with new brushs smelling funky

  • Mantic, type in "shaving, the agony of an every day ritual" and watch that guy shave. awww it hurt me just looking at it. by flashguy001.

  • What's the name of the razor he is using in this video?

  • @pbmaster4 looks like Gillette Super Speed, perhaps 50s'.

  • @pbmaster4 It's a Weishi razor, which is modeled after the old Gillette Super Speeds.

  • Thanks for posting the video. My cat seems facinated by the bathroom sink too for some odd reason.

  • Thanks for this great video! I just bought a Merkur 180, and it's in the mail. Thanks for the tutorial!

  • Dear Sir, thank you for these instructional videos you are a Real Man and an inspiration!

  • Helpful, only difference is i use a gillette mach 3

  • Favouriting this video for reference. Very, very helpful. Thank you!

  • mantic59 and geofatboy, best Shaving experts on the Tube

  • This video is so, so amazingly helpful. Though, I have to admit some seething jealously at the ease in which you make the lather.

  • damn i bet nikki minaj would put her pussy on his sideburns

  • 20 minutes if you have beard, mustache and sideburns, gotta hate perfect angles

  • Hey do you mind telling me the difference between the types of Badger Brushes, I bought a Art Of Shaving Pure Badger brush, I am a beginner so I do not know the difference, thanks for the help.

  • its just so pleasant watching you shave

  • This question is open to all answers: I use clubmans talc as part of my aftershave routine so my question is this; can shaving talc be harmful to your health? Becuase it is such a fine powder, can inhaling it be harmful such as cancerous (no I don't inhale intentionally just the excess powder that fills the room). Any answers would be great.

    Cheers.

  • Short strokes? Is that a safety razor thing? I was always told to make strokes as long as possible (it might have been bad advice). And I always wondered what that witch hazel at the store was for...

  • thanks for the good videos mantic :-)

Too bad that you live so far away. Would like to drink a beer with you and with you philosophize about shaving :-)

    Greetings from Germany

  • Hello again. I have such delicate skin that if I even THOUGHT about going up against the grain I would look like I went thru a windshield!!! I have to go downward & with the grain. I only shave every other day = sometimes every 3rd day. Thank. Sincerely, JAMES.

  • i shave in 3 mins sir.

  • My god, this would have taken me about an hour to do. I just don't have the time to be that thorough!

  • It's impossible to get a really close shave without going against the grain IMO.

I've never had any problems. First pass with the grain, 2nd against, 3rd touch ups.

  • How many shaves should a single double edged blade last? just one?

  • @MrOutdoorsman32 One DE blade should last about 5-7 shaves. This is a conservative estimate, but since each blade costs a fraction of the price of a cartridge razor (never seen one that cost more than $1), I personally like to stick to it and keep my blades sharp.

  • lathery goodness.......

  • I think your videos should be mandatory in schools for all 7th-9th grader males (and some really hairy females). If I watched your videos when I was at 8th grade it would have saved my from years of bloody sinks, razor burns, ingrown hairs and frustration every time I picked up a razor.

  • Just a little correction at the end of the process: AFAIK the badger hair brushes should be stored hanging upside down for longer life.

  • @roddick0405 not necessaryily. Some brush makers have a preference but if its not stated it can be stored either bristles up or bristles down.

  • @mantic59

What kind of witch hazel is preferable.

I found that some come with alcohol, others without, some with rose oil etc.

  • @upsallysskirt you will have to experiment to see which one you like best.

  • @mantic59 Where did you purchase your Razor? Online or at a major retail store?

  • where can you get those shavers?

  • Thank you for making this video! , i've watched all of them several times and it inspired me to go with a safety razor. I'll be watching often to fine tune my technique.

  • Nice video. Shame that I much prefer having a beard - takes away the hassle, and it's way cooler!

  • Nice video. Shame that I much prefer having a beard - takes away the hassle!

  • is there any house hold products or oils i could use that wont mess up my brush?

  • UH OH. Is that a little cut that i see just under your chin at 6:01 LOL

  • have you ever heard of a have you ever heard Mustache and Goatee Grooming Safety Razor? How do i use this?

  • I've read that the weishi is a very gentle beginner razor. Since you made this video, do you still use it?

  • Cool video, thx

  • You are the Bob Ross of Shaving! Only you can't make happy little trees on your face.

  • Thank you so much. I was doing it completely wrong!

  • @jameswwefan1 shaving soap yes, not sure I would want to try it with regular soap though.

  • @mantic59 Hey mantic just a couple questions. 1. do you shave everyday? and 2. do you reccomend shaving everyday or waiting a day or 2 inbetween to give your beard a rest?

  • @rbrtkchlsk I shave almost every day (maybe 6 days out of 7) and I think most people can shave every day without a problem. Some skin experts do suggest taking a day off now and then to let the skin rest.

  • that Gillette clone you're using, is that a weishi?

  • @salazch12 yes, thats a Weishi

  • I have been getting ingrown hairs on the bottom of my chin and neck. What do you recommend to help this?

  • @MrLukec16 check my videos page. I have a video about dealing with ingrown hairs.

  • Uncle mantic59, you rock! Thanks!

  • Mantic been following your vids on and off since 2007 and owe you a big thanks for saving me several hundred dollars (UK pounds to be specific). I use a few types of de razor always with feather blades and a couple of creams (favourite is the unscented art of shaving one). Haven't had an ingrown hair in a very long time and it takes me less than 10 mins for very close shave (3 pass). Keep up the good work and please make sure some of your royalties go to the cat.

  • @Zeldi4ka oh i get it, you're retarded. i'm looking forward to your video where you try to shave with a double edged razor and slice yourself to ribbons with how 'simple' it is

  • Hey Mantic,

You inspired me to buy a DE razor! I've been wet shaving for years with a brush and shaving cream, but I was still getting irritation from my schick quattro. I was unaware that there was an alternative between catrtidge and straight edge I guess.

I have had about three shaves with my Merkur 33C and I've got Proraso Pre-post shave cream and shaving soap and I love it. The shave gets better every time.

Question though: where should i purchase blades at the cheapest price? Online?

  • Do you have any videos on disgusting ass razor bumps? lol

  • Me again mantic, can you do a video that explains the settings on a DE razor? i.e. on the tightest setting I struggle to get a close shave and have to perform many passes taking too long. Loosening it up gives me a closer shave as blade exposure helps but irritation and a loose head on the razor are potential problems. I use a merkur 34cc, thanks again

  • I still see a shadow above the lip ;p What I do to get rid of the shadow after shaving upwards and downwards above my lip is a standard Braunz Pocket electric shaver and it works fantastic to achieve a clean look. And to polish everything up, cover up does wonders haha. Yet I never go against the grain on the sides of my face. It may look finr the day I do it, but I pay for it the next day with razor bumps and redness.

  • If the blade jumps on my face (as if it were getting stuck)... whats the best way to resolve this?

  • @romeroldn change your blade

  • @thegame245

im using this blade :executive-shaving.co.uk/shaving/safety-razors/merkur-safety-razor-barber-pole-slant-39.php with a new blade.

  • @romeroldn what?

  • @romeroldn prepare your face more thoroughly or make a slightly thicker lather.

  • @romeroldn Also you can stretch your skin a bit with your other hand for a smoother stroke.

  • Thank you for making this outstanding video.

Do you have any recommendations as to where to go to purchase an inexpensive DE razor and badger brush?

Also, is there any maintenance that needs to be done on the DE blades (oiling, drying, adjustments, etc.)?

Thanks and keep up the good work!

  • @StopIllegalAliens01 there are a number of good products depending on your budget. Check my blog for some sources.

  • @StopIllegalAliens01 Mantic is one hell of a guy to create these vids. So a BIG THANKS TO HIM!!! I too only use inexpensive(yet not cheap) products that fit into my budget. Van Der Hagen is a good brand(of course not top of the line, but it gets the job done). Local pharmacy's may carry a set which includes bowl, shaving cake, and boar brush. I bought a "shaving factory" DE razor off of Amazon just as a starter, and DE blades at a local drug store. Hoped this helped & best of luck!

  • Proglide woulda shaved your stubs within seconds

  • Thanks for putting this information out there. I found a Gillette single sided safety razor at an antique shop. Are those blades readily available? It comes with a sharpening strap of some sort and a box of blades.

  • @moirmoir Gillette single side? or single blade with 2 edges? if its truly a single side its probably an old techmatic razor, blade cartridges no longer available. if its the classic butterfly door razor for a single blade with two edges then yes, blades are still available.

  • @mantic59 Thanks for the response. I Went back and took a look at it. It's a Valet Autostrop. I looked online and found out that the blades are very hard to find and that it's not the best razor for a newbie. I also joined Badger & Blade which is a great resource for those starting out in wet shaving.

  • correct me if im wrong, but i read on some shaving oil website that foam actually doesn't "cover" surface area on the face like oil does, but rather "sits " on top of the beard.

  • I did my first DE wet shave today with a Schick Krona I got off EBay for only $2.25 and found that DE shaving is as easy as you and others here have stated. No nicks but some slight razor burn, I used a good gel but I think I might need to prep better, I'll try again in the morning after a shower. Thanks for all the info.

  • i cant see how this is a good shave

  • lot of wasted time just to cut so hair

  • 20 minutes for a shave!? I get a good close shave in about 7 minutes! And thats with twice (up and down). I dont spend time with a brush.

  • @rokenater Do you use short strokes?

  • what after shave balm do you recommend? is nivea after shave balm good? i have always used it but now i have upgraded everything so wondered if that should also be upgraded to a better brand

  • @BurnMyEyes0107 actually nivea for men 'sensitive' is very good.

  • do you use a mug or bowl of some kind when using a soap?

  • @jaffarm yes i usually do.

  • Im 15 ha ve a mustache i starter at 7

  • My father didnt teach me anything about shaving. He just handed me a razor and a can of shaving cream and said "go". Very nice video though.

by the way, you remind me of the detective from Heavy Rain.

  • im 13 and have a beard? like a acutall beard... is that ok??

  • @heyimtheguyoverthere sure its ok, everybody starts at a different age (I think I started around 13 myself)

  • @mantic59 ok thanks :) i was getting worried i was some kind of freak haha

  • Hi! Thank you for your videos, I am 25 and been shaving since I was 14ish. I am always up for learning new shaving techniques. I was wondering how do you get that good lathery coating on your face in the beginning. I use Gillete shaving cream (its cheap in price) which is really hard on my skin, perhaps thats the problem? What would you suggest someone use to get that rich lathery feeling of the shaving cream?

  • @MnePofik Gillette shaving cream is terrible, there are many better. check out my "where to find traditional wetshaving products in the US" video.

  • hey mantic, what was the orange shave cake you used?

  • @Flamesman Van Der Hagen glycerin soap. Very inexpensive.

  • Mantic, thank you for teaching me what my father and grandfather should have taught me about the traditional wet shave! I've recently made the switch to traditional wet shaving and I have to say that it is the best personal hygiene decision I've made. Men, don't be fooled by the advertisements and the "science" involved with multi-blade razors. Make the switch. Your face will love you!

  • I enjoyed this informative and very helpful video.

  • mantic is shorts strokes really necessary??? can i speed my shave up if i use longer strokes or will that cause some kind of irritation??

  • @daboss212 as you get more comfortable with your shave technique you can try lengthening your strokes. It will work fine with most people up to a point.

  • @mantic59

mantic, when you got that with-the-grain straight razor shave from that barber, did you have any stubble after when you ran your hand against the grain or was the blade so sharp that it caught it all? because typically, a with the grain only shave wouldnj't get it all. how was the straight razor?

  • @daboss212 - why are you looking to speed your shave up? isn't that missing the point?

  • @catherinewheels11 - cuz when you have stuff to get done, you have to speed it up lol

  • @daboss212

I shave in the evening before I pass out, or if I have to go out somewhere for a gathering or meeting I will shave in the afternoon so that I have tome. Your time doesnt HAVE to be in the morning like most people, just grab a time that lends space and give er a go.

  • ok soo i shave every 3 days with an electric wet shaver and its hell.. i hate it, i always get irritation and i cant shave untill its grown cause it hurts to shave the next day. would you say that the soap lather is better than the shaving cream in the cans, would u recomend to start single blade shaving if so whwere can i get them????

  • I am wanting to start learning how to double edge save, and was wondering if this was an ok starting razor. If not any suggestions?

    Parker Safety Razor 89R

  • @NaturalGroundation the Parker 89 should be fine.

  • This guys a genius. I was wondering why I kept getting ingrown hairs and skin problems when I shave.

    Thanks for the videos!

  • Hi! I'd highly appreciate if you found some time to answer my question. You see, I'm unlucky enough to have a heavy beard combined with extremely sensitive skin. I've tried many different ways of shaving (disp., el.), but every time I end with burns and nicks. Even though I try to follow all the basic tips. I'm about to try shaving with DE. I just don't know what razor would fit me better. I stopped at Merkur34C HD. Is it a good choice for a man like me or would you recommend smth. else? Thanx.

  • @DrSequoia yes the 34C HD is a very popular razor!

  • 3 passes take too much time and aren't worth it.... you can seriously get a good shave in 6-8 mins with one pass if you know what you're doing. there was barely any difference between the first and second shave and none between the second and the third and you never pulled your skin taut...

  • I love TTO style razors and i have the weishi however its not as well built as I would wanted it to be... is there another TTO razor (I heard the feather one isnt good) that is of quality but not 160 bucks (merkur vision or watver)

  • @paradigmmaker about your only low cost alternative TTO is going to be a vintage Gillette. Check with old relatives or antique shops.

  • @mantic59 ah thanks, im waiting for the right one to show up on ebay.... btw do u have an engineering background I can tell by your videos and comments you u gotta be an engineer or science related backgrond

  • @paradigmmaker yes I have a technical backgound. :)

  • dont mean to make fun of but great facial expression.

    pause at 0:02

  • Hi Mantic-

Excellent guides- they've been extremely helpful for a DE razor newbie such as myself.

Quick question- may I ask what kind of shaving soap you were using in this particular demonstration? I know product placements are not your usual thing, but I'm curious about what works well.

Thanks again for the informative vids.

  • @hybar see the video description for the products I used.

  • wats closer a cartrigde razor or DE razor?

  • @2diefor8694 i think a DE is closer, if you use good products and technique.

  • @2diefor8694 DE is closer and it lasts longer. Some days I am still near BB clean at 6pm. There is, however (per above) more time and technique involved and your technique and efficiency will improve with time. Light touch with no pressure is paramount.

  • look at the clock behind him , it took over 30 mins for this shave

  • @2diefor8694 look again. the clock clearly shows 7:18 at the end of the video (freeze the video at 8:25)

  • Good video

  • Great tips! Really helpful, thank you! Can you do one for shaving "Balls" next

  • it was doin in real time..but look at the clock behind you...

  • mantic, which VDH soap do you use ? I have the deluxe and it doesn't nearly lather as good as yours. I mean I can spin the brush around on it for half a minute and don't get a proper lather ?!

  • @Cordy283 I used the VDH glycerin soap for this video, which does seem to lather better for me than Deluxe as well. With deluxe I find that I have to start off with a relatively dry brush and add a little water as I mix (either on my face or in a bowl).

  • isnt shaving AGAINST the grain bad? he seems to be doing that his second time around

  • @TranceLuvr69 shaving against the grain is possible if you prepare your face properly, use decent products, and use the correct technique (e.g. beard reduction).

  • @mantic59 ah i see. i will keep that in mind then. thanks!

  • Do you ever grow a beard?

  • @Sunderland4745 I grew a beard in college once. It looked terrible. :)

  • @mantic59 Try growing one again. It will look ten times better than the one you grew in college.

  • @FenderMetalShredder nope. Mrs. mantic59 likes me clean-shaven :)

  • @mantic59 Haha. Fair enough. My girlfriend like me clean-shaven too but I still have a beard anyway. Hahaha.
