Wing Commander will always have a special place in my heart as the best space sim ever. It was the first to capture cinematic visuals, a stirring musical score and a fascinating storyline (not to mention it's branching story has yet to be adequately emulated as far as I am aware) combined to make for a hell of an experience.
That said: I LOVED Descent: The Great War. It was by far one of the best game's of its generation. The storyline evoked a tension so thick you could cut it with a knife.
Still one of the best game introductions I have ever watched. The music is especially brilliant... such a shame that an OST soundtrack was never made available for either of the games released for this trilogy that was never completed by Volition...

Theres a Source Project for both Freespace 1& 2. Its complete and makes the game look amazing by today standards, since the game is also freeware now its worth getting and playing this amazing game.

I like the mission oriented campaigns. I would like to see 3 or 4 full campaigns that reveal a story line (like 100+ missions) with the same type of approach to the game.
Yeah but it kind of detracts from the way the universe is set up. I know you are a nameless cog in the system but are there really THAT many nameless cogs all doing the exact same missions?
It also makes the synergy between missions harder especially with the time lapses between time sensitive missions.. like 'we are scrambling you immediately when you get back to base.'
...more like special multiplayer missions oriented from one central place, like a ranking system, and different mission for each rank, and a system to make everyone in a single room a different rank...but then again a button for dual missions might be used

Well, don't feel bad, look up Freespace Source Code Project. Volition Inc. released the source code for FS2 and now the open source community has upgraded the graphics (they look amazing), also they've ported Freespace 1 to the updated graphics engine. Look for it, its amazing. And FREE!!!
Install the game and when its installed right click on the shortcut, go to properties, and select "run with windows 95" mode, it makes it work with that program.

Freespace 1 was better than Freespace 2. The story was tighter, the combat was better and it was so much bloody fun. Freespace 2 was a great game too but Freespace was the best fighter combat game ever made.
And this is the best intro to any game I have ever seen. Give me chills when I see the Shivans opening those jump points every single time I watch it.

Relative to the standards of today, the graphics aren't great, but this old timer has top-notch gameplay. Stinks how THQ bought over Volition...Freespace III would be a AWESOME game.

Indeed, the behaviour of the Shivans at the end just doesn't make any sense- why bugger off for no apparant reason after spending the whole game trying to wipe out the humans and vasudans?
They were probably amassing that big honking Sathanas fleet for the second invasion. Also, the game puts forward the idea that they have a hive mind and the destruction of the lucifer ruined their communications.
lol the great war is the best one, i think. its pretty intense. plus, it take skill to kill, lol the missiles suck. and the scorpions and the dragons, omg, are so hard to kill!

SC 1 is a good game, but while SC owns rts strategy, FS owns space sim (and with FS Open, likely will for a long long time)

why dont u instal XP on a disk partition? Or right clicked the freespace's.exes and select run with compatibility, that should work...

thats why they add online multiplayer...
maybe there could be three games: skirmish with team deathmatch and free 4 all,
CTF and finally an multiplayer RPG that might be called the multiverse
