  • And thus we laugh at the ones who think it's better to download music off the internet.

    Vinyl has a soul!

  • I remember this entire era with its cracks and pops. My parents Hi Fi speakers were as big as I was.

  • Love the way you did this! fantastic!

    Thanks For Posting!

  • opasna stvar...svaka čast

  • Was it Ian or Jeffrey Hammond playing the harmonica, anyone know?

  • rock n roll meets american southern blues....gotta love that mix

  • Awesome

  • compare this first 37 seconds to the first 41 seconds from the song "Adele - Rolling in the deep", b*itch simply stole it.

  • @gekalskip yeah, you're reaching.

  • thats not a 45 45s are small and play from outside in

  • Known Ian and the Band since I bought this record in 1968.

Tull still going strong, coming up to their 45th year, and still playing to sell out concerts around the globe.

Ian's a genius who has created so many unique sounds in that time and a thoroughly nice fellow!

    'The Master'.

    AT

  • old technologies must be honored

  • oh AWESOME!

i have this on vinyl too...it's so delicious to listen to this old stuff on vinyl...

  • esta la conozco de snatch,cerdos y diamantes.peliculon

  • Not only is the song awesome, you recorded it while it was playing on vinyl, you sir, are offcially my hero.

  • I saw them in Vancouver in 1970? The opening band was Yes, hadn't heard of Yes at that point, both bands were great.

  • I have the original albums, I still listen to them (at high RMS) lol

MY kids used to come into the lounge and tell ME to turn MY music down !!!!

Damn , it just don't get better than this.

  • i prefer the sounds of old vinyls and 45s than mp3s

  • Tull was one of THE Best bands to see live back in the 60's early 70's.. I saw them a few times but the most memorable was in Anaheim with a lil band called Led Zepplin....What a perfect combo.....I have tickets for Tull playing in Oregon 6-17-2011

  • I just bought the re-mastered Auqalung, and they add this song to the CD. The version that I have sounds so different. Music is basically the same but voice sounds completely different. Was there more than one version of the song out there?

  • @groovysherrie65 This, and the Living In The Past version.

  • @Yubera2K10 Thanks for the info. Peace

  • @groovysherrie65 The version on the Aqualung remaster is from a BBC session, not the original 45rpm issue.

  • @aspersive Thank you for the information. Peace

  • 1:05 Gimli has picked up da flute!

  • Jethro Tull was definetly one of the first 'prog rock' bands.

  • That 45' it's a big big jewel. Great tune from the best rock band!

  • are you kidding me? a 45???? omg

  • I remember first listening to this on a compilation album called 'You Can All Join In'. I still have it and enjoy the Tull among others to this day.

  • Ian Anderson is a F***ing genius.

  • I had this single when I was a kid. I got a lot of Island singles the only other one I reemember was Fairport convention The Time Is Near which isnt on Yutube!

  • Merci pour le vertige des sensations procurées par ce retour en arrière ....

  • Jethro Tull, 1969 - 1977 2DVD set available - More info, audio, & video clips on our youtube channel

  • Thx for this. I first heard this song on an Island compendium called 'You can all join in', 1968. This had John Martyn, Free , Nirvana (british) and a host of other progressive bands. Ah! Happy days.

  • nice to know someone else listens to vinyl still!

  • Tony Iommi from Black Sabbath played guitar on this song before he was a member of Black Sabbath

  • @RADRONWHIT Actually, Tony Iommi became a member of Jethro Tull for a brief spell (about a week, more or less) after the band (with Mick Abrahams) cut "This Was," from which this single came . . . but if you see the semi-legendary television special "The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus," Jethro Tull appears---with Iommi in the lineup, shortly before he left to be replaced first by former Nice guitarist Davy O'List and then by Martin Barre.

  • hahaha , Its funny cause a lot of dudes don't know what records sound like . You actually get way more detail sound with LP . Love the Circus Circus version of this song but they recently cut the visual out and just the sound is there .

  • @pcnazz You don't reap those effects through a computer though, because of the digitial conversion. Hence, the range is shit, and sometimes it affects the song.

  • VINYL RULZ !!! nothing else sounds so great as vinyl.

  • Hey, This was the song that launched Tull. What happened to Mick Abrahams? Did he not fit !? He went on his own way anyway, Good on yer. The rest of the band went on from good to much worse. But it bought a Scots estate for Ian Anderson - probably not a bad guy anyway. He looks a bit different these days.

  • Does anyone have the first single that the band released? It's called 'Sunshine Day' and was written by Mick Abrahams. It's not on 'This Was' and I can't find it anywhere.

  • great, tanks

  • ian anderson at this point, 1968 looked a lot like Robert Plant-the pirate/minstrel look

  • Is it just me or is there some sort of "Jethro- Zeppelin" or a "Led -Tull" riff lurking around .52 -1.30 and 2.20 -3.00 minutes on this song ? AAAArrrrrggg ! I need help, someone call a doctor !

Anyway good excuse to listen to the song a couple of dozen times I suppose.......ha !

  • @MalThorgan Sounds a LOT like LZ's "Hats Off to Roy Harper."

  • @hotprofdude - thanx -I'm checking it out-you might be right-no longer have any Zep albums-so I'm going on my long term memory ! (40 years ) Gonna take me awhile 2 re listen B 4 I'm sure but you might have nailed it ! Cheers.

  • @MalThorgan Of course, Tull eclipsed LZ 3 buy 3 years...this song is amazing...it just happens to sound like LZ sounded in '71...

  • @MalThorgan No, because Jethro Tull is actually good. ;)

  • Amazing... incredible...

  • Trigun comes to mind whenever I hear this song.

  • im 22 but i know im a flower child.

  • nobody before or since sounds like tull.

  • nice noodles

  • thanks , i did listen to this so often in those days on a lp ; best of island.

lots of memories from when i was about 15 join this song

  • awesome song. The 60s rock!

  • Awesome! I haven't heard this for such a long time...vinyl...perfect sound

  • That was great! Haven't heard this song for a good long time - thanks for uploading it. Yes, plastic does sound good, and todays kids will never know how good it was. BTW, if you haven't head it, check out Jack Hicko's cover of this on his channel - it's amazing.

  • what a tune

  • 45 plastic sounds good

  • this is otherwordly bluegrass...gutbucket sailing music from Orion.

the guitar/bass lines are just aces.

  • Comment removed

  • this song is magic!!!!

  • THE 80S ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • all I have to say is play that again.

  • from a record, good idea !"

  • this was one of the first jethro tull songs i ever heard so when i heard it i knew jethro tull is amazing

  • mmm the smell of vinyl ......no comparison

  • I would give my right arm to have either Ian Anderson's voice or hair. Either would be good.

  • vinyl beats cd everytime

  • Hahaha i do think so as well!

  • oh dear. please don't confuse ian with a member of a here today and fuckwit party.i think the vocal was put through a leslie speaker ,first used by a j lennon at abbey road studios.thanks for the posting and what a pity i can't open up the album and hear what more delights will entaill

  • jimmy the ferret rules!

  • They are racist?!?

  • You are confusing Ian Anderson with the Ian Anderson who was associated Britain's National Front. No one is Jethro Tull is racist.

  • They are not racist.... Its a different Ian Anderson who has the leader of a Nazi party in the U.K.... Jethro Tull are NOT racist at all, get your facts straight please

  • OMG im devastated

  • Miss the old scratchy 45's. Phenomenal song and a great period in music. Going to see them in June 2010, in Highland Park, IL.

Yup! Tull is on tour again. Might be your last chance to see them.

  • sad to see people dont even know what this song is about

  • @bkfilipi what's it about?

  • is the song being played from a 45

  • Yes, I recorded it directly from the 45 that you see in the video...and that is how the record actually sounds, despite the comment from an earlier poster who thinks that it's some sort of effect caused by compression to mp3.

  • Sound is ACE.. wish I had kept my LP's .

  • your right I wish I had kept my lp. but hell I have them in cd and dvs but is not the same

  • @jimmytheferret I thought the same thing. It was actually a cool effect (to my mind) as the song started with scratchy 45 sound and then seemed to be brought up to the modern age. Whatever, it's a great song. Thanks.

  • @jimmytheferret yea this effect was popular in the 60s. they would use a simple megaphone or sing through a telephone. The Beatles also successfully used this effect.

  • @jimmytheferret I had the same 45, and I agree. That is EXACTLY how it sounds. Sadly, some one stole mine.

  • music is free ad sick you cant change that

  • ad sick you have a monopoly here/ ive posted before you keep comeing up as 1st????????/

  • How can I not like this song...my given name is Jeffrey...lol

  • wooou! :D

  • The illusion of real sound (as in not actual LP-sound, but almost)

I have the same recorder (from LP -> MP3). It makes the sound MP3 which is worse than the real deal, but you got to LOVE the effect it has! Thanks for the up!

  • They were on "Rolling Stones Rock n Roll Circus" with that song. Seems as if Martin Barre is playing Harp there. Correct me when I am wrong...

  • martin barre wasn't with jethro tull at this time. it was probably jeffery hammond

  • vinyl sounds good

  • Legend !!! I'm blissed !!

  • fantastic sound ... harmo !!

  • Damn, this is freakin' awesome!

  • At least he could have cleaned the record! lol...cool stuff! Rockin Jam with Tony Iiomi on guitar...

  • Nice job, Ferret. Thanks.

  • Harmonious

  • SO ORIGINAL yes i am shouting

  • love the song and also some nice pics!!!

  • Early Tull kicks ass,man I miss those days

  • YES thanks..dammit man..

  • Great idea With the Record!!!!

  • This song is one of my favorite Jethro Tull songs! Was Ian Anderson's voice put through some kind of a filter for this song?

  • Probably an harmonica mic!

  • What a great idea, so many of us miss the motion of the old vinyl...plus finding so many old photos of the band. Thanks for posting.

  • Finally, it's in Mono!

  • So nice, thx for uploading :)

  • This is one of my all-time favorite Tull songs. Thanks for uploading it!

  • nice thanks for the upload man the recorded version is strangely hard to find on this site
