This bridge is very interesting because of it age and design. Do you know if there is a vehicle weigh limit on the auto portion? It looks to me that it may well be restricted.
Yes there is, I think it's 15 tons or something. The DoT wants to build a new highway bridge here, but from what I've heard it's still many, many years down the line.
I've crossed this bridge several times while riding the southwest chief...One time we had to wait for a ship to pass...

If you are at the end of the train, couldn't someone just press the button, open the door and fall out? or is the last car's rear door disabled.

The door is physically locked. The conductor has the key.

I did this in July, 06. Great Vid. I took the Chief all the way from Chi to LA,, Got into LAUPT about 20 mins late.. great ride.

Fort Madison is one of my favorite railfanning locations. I've yet to go across the bridge on Amtrak, though! Nice shot!
