@MrLiddesdale I don't think Hamish penned it. As far as I know it can only be traced back as a traditional American song. The line "go to the Clyde" only being a modern addition.

Bollocks! The original lyrics have ALWAYS included the reference to the Clyde river, since there was ANY version of this old song! It's even there in the late, Great Nina Simone's version of this!

It's a reference back to the original place of the song's birth, not some American reinvent FFS!

If you know SFA, leave it at that! Otherwise, you only make a monkey of yourself!
