  • at first i was like wow that japanese guy kind of looks like greg howe, then im like ohhhhhh lol

  • good jazz

  • Plays he a Schecter?

  • @LegendaryEagle1993

It's an ESP (says on the headstock)... Looks like those old Schecters/Andersons though.

  • My fave drum solo ever.

  • Bad Ass Bass Player..Go Asian !!

  • tetsuo+ howe+ dennis= eargasm

  • @locochupacerebros and Onozuka too!

  • That drum solo at the end is the greatest.

  • jawdropping!

  • I tell you this song i have heard several thousind times and its a complete master-piece when it comes to chaos contra technic------- I just fucking love it!

  • If you wanna see punk jazz, check out Naked City. That, unfortunately...is punk jazz. ._.

  • @JordanClunn Hella....

  • I'd love to know the chord progression that starts around 2:25. Anyone?

  • you know if It's Jaco he obviously doesn't understand hardcore punk even if he tries too.

What I wanna see is punk with a jazz drummer

  • @angiec789 you know, you are right... because HE IS DEATH and HE IS NOT IN THIS VIDEO and belive me, jazz requires more technique than punk or hardcore shit whatever, SHOW RESPECT TO PASTORIUS AND DENNIS CHAMBERS (the drummer) don't you make stupid comments, LOL

  • @angiec789 Check out Canderia.

  • These guys are good - certainly does credit to the genius of Mr. Pastorius.

  • wow theyre sick

  • If you USE the word "PUNK" at very very very least PRETEND to have some clue to it's cultural significance. Dumb'ed down = hyper complicated....seems kind of difficult to fusion together.

this is just a Chick Chorea (Chick-note-diarrhea ) cover act...and I'm kind of bored the whole time I'm listening to it.

  • @issofunky again, punk jazz is a song written close to 40 years ago.

  • Great stuff, very extatic solo! This is how it would proably sound if Scott Henderson'd eat Joe Satriani ;)

  • zikinha

  • hmm...dennis chambers, what a beast

  • i could listen to this wacky shit all day

  • Burnin'!! Great music guys!! Jaco would have liked it...

  • the bass sounds great

  • It sounds a bit like ADLD - billy cobham

  • 1:25

    wtf? :D

  • its probably because their not used to it and their ears arent really trained to catch little subtleties so all they hear is random elements. the pop culture really doesnt help at all lol!

  • absurdo! esse cara é muito bom! veja o improviso em 6:28 - 6:44

absurd! this guy is really good! see improvisation in 6:28 to 6:44

  • DOES ANYBODY KNOW WHERE I CAN FIND TABS FOR THIS SONG (guitar pro preferably) bass or guitar. would love to have both. if anybody knows please help me! i have guitar pro tabs for dethklok's "dethalbum 2" if anybody want to trade or whatever

  • @asstin18 dude in jazz, you'd be a shame learning tabs lol. Your ear and a lead sheet is all you get

  • Jazz has many forms as well. Swing jazz, bebop jazz, Big Band Jazz, Dixieland jazz, Freeform jazz, Acid Jazz, Nujazz, Latin-African jazz (cuban - Brazilian influence jazz), and what we know today as Fusion rock-blues jazz. It takes a good ear to really appreaciate good avant-garde jazz. Not everyone is into jazz just like not everyone is into classical music or rap or hip-hop. Everyone has their own taste in music. Jazz is for more sophisticated mature audiences that know culture.

  • @MrHardrod2

LOL. Nice job copying and pasting from Wikipedia, your favorite webpage. You total clown. You couldn't write something original if you were paid to. Dog-eater.

  • Thats awesome man, great version of Punk Jazz. Especially them playing that jaco improv section you hear him doing originally on the record with Tony Williams, and then going right back in to that hard swing with out a slip up. Not easy.

  • i guess you have to be a musician to understand the awesomeness of this

  • my pants are wet like shit

  • This type of music takes some BIG BIG balls. Lovin' it in all of its weirdness

  • Greg Howe é fantástico!!

  • greg howe owns

  • its not random its free form jazz and you have to be amazing at playing guitar to be able to do that!

  • interesting idea, but the loveable jazz nuances are lost in the distortion.

  • Fuck, when that shit kicked in at the beginning I almost shit my pants :D

  • 0_0

  • band name please

  • @bambilio GENTLE HEARTS

  • Comment removed

  • Anyone who knows anything knows that Tetsuo is giving mad fucking props to Jaco playing on that J-Bass. I'm not sure if it's really a Fender, the headstock looks a little off. Anyone got insight on that?

  • Jaco was a god! i agree with mrvallely i dont see any punk influence... but i see a little metal influence. METAL JAZZ

  • 3:10 to 4:20 is a great play between individual voicings. You can see Dennis just grinning at that point.

  • I can't believe anyone has the patience to learn something this complicated

  • I would love to see this live. I probably wouldn't listen to this say..just sitting around the house but I'd love to be in the audience for this. I remembert Weather Report back in the day. My brother was really into them, That's how i found out about them. That's also how i heard about Jaco. That dude was totally STUPID on bass. In a good way.

  • Dennis Chambers on drums!

  • Comment removed

  • You know you have Jazz Fusion when you have the Fretless Bass as the lead..Thanks Jaco :)

  • ?! WTF is this?

  • it's FUSION.

  • @JasonBecker85 simply FUSION!!!!

  • You can classify this however you want, I classify it as face melting.

  • The bass and drums make this track

  • kind of corny. i don't know, this doesn't really do it for me. the weather report version is better.

  • @mindbodylightsound10 it's just the guitar soloing. it sounds video gamey to me. but the rest of the band is spot on.

  • Bass sound isn't really jaco enough, but it's the playing that counts.

  • This is awesome, I love the drummer!!

  • for those people who don't understand his solo....because they are play in a minor process....he is playing things that fit among those notes being played by the other musicians there.....

  • @JCfallarah He's playing Jaco's solo at the beginning of the original song.

  • Im not so sure this is what I'd classify as jazz, but thats just an opinion

  • @MrJazzmattaz its definitely jazz

If you listen to the whole song, it gets jazzy after the intro

  • very very very fortunate sons of bitches who got to sit there and see this performance live

    yes very jealous :(

  • god i hate that guitar tone

sounds like every soft jazz tone

  • I hear that alot on Greg's early 2000 stuff.

I think his Laguna and Cornford gear used today does sound better. But in this Tetso(Jet Li) is just walking all over him.lol.

  • suckers this is a song from weather report

  • funny how so many people obviously expect a punk song when they first watch this :D

    it's simply awesome!

The intro and the B part are mind squeezing fantastic

  • These motherfuckers..... smh. They from another planet cause this cover of Punk Jazz is just perfect. So smooth and fresh!

  • la estetica visual no hace el estilo.

  • I only have the DVD on copy, can't find it anywhere!

Gentle Hearts are truly inspiring, I suggest people check 'em out more. Them, and UZEB.

  • i remember i asked greg if he could play or even remember any parts of this song.....he laughed and said no

we all have our moments lol

  • This is not a fusion of punk and Jazz, this is a song called punk jazz originally by Jaco Pastorius you can find it on Weather report's Mr. Gone album the punk jazz name comes form a critical review and has nothing to do with punk music

  • @mrvallely I know mr nerd

  • I hate to disappoint but this sounds like just fusion

  • Hey, do you know what bass that is? I know Jazzbass-copy.. but Tokai?

  • Thank for posting this amazing video. These are fantastic. Great song and they made it there own.

  • Awesome!

  • what the jeff..that was amazing.

  • didn't realise I held my breath for 8 minutes. excellent.

  • masterful, purely masterful!!!

  • nicholas barker at drums LoL,

no seriously, who are this guys i really like them is punk jazz the band name, sum1 please tell me

  • The bands name is Gentle Hearts

    Composed of

    Dennis Chambers on drums

    Tetsuo Sakurai on Bass

    Greg how on guitar

and some really happy guy who's name I cant remember playing keys.

Check out Wonderland in the sky

  • Akira Onozuka is on keys. Anyway the band doesn't really have a name. The album was called Gentle Hearts and the band seems to have been put together by Tetsuo Sakurai. Tetsuo and Greg Howe (the Guitarist) both play in this style. So you may want to check them both out.

  • Punk Jazz is a Jaco Pastorius song that Greg Howe and his band here are covering.

  • Awesome!!

  • His ears are very young to understand... easy, man! hehehe

  • Yeah, guitarista1988....you said it...

"can't find a real GROVE". nonsense scales??

I never learned that scale in all my Jazz improv or theory classes. Must be a new one. Stick with those 4/4's man.

    LISTEN CLOSELY........listen.

  • sounds like buckethead and jaco pastorius

  • i don't know why i can not get into this music...i just feel at times it's a bit unnatural and way to mathematical...like its' hard to find a real grove. I feel like you have to be a musician to relaly understand there point...i know im being biased but some of these bands just play in random time and play these nonsense scales..i don't know..after listening to this i just wanna put on some p funk and jam with a 4/4..i guess it's my but most def 5 stars.

  • Well you said it.... and if you don't understand it you are not yet a musician. You should probably get back to this clip in about 10 more years.

  • strange, after this I feel like buying the DVD

  • lol wut?

  • In this song, they demonstrate clearly that Chick Corea, John Patitucci, Frank Gambale and Dave Weckl are no longer the only ones who can play this style.

This song actually has parts that remind me of the glorious Chick Corea Elektric Band.

  • i was about to say the exact same thing

totaly sounds like Chick elek band

  • I believe they are the best of the best, in this music genre, and there aren't, to this day, that many people around who are capable of playing their songs, let alone being able to compose music to that level of musicianship, that sounds like them.

However, I gotta say Greg Howe and his mates are among the very few who are getting close and might be capable.

  • this is the real deal people, jazz and jazz fusion like others have said is not for everyone but these guys make it to enjoyable not to listen. jazz is the only style that lets musicians be who they really are in music. add libs, q@a, solo, this is where if you feel it you play it, not whats written on a sheet of music. i was a competion jazz player for years and where else can you find the most talent in any style to just go for it and make some awsome music? got to love it.

  • teh bassest is so clean . same for greg.

    Keep rockin GREG

  • I swear, this is as if Jaco Pastorius and Jeff Beck shredded together through these two guys!

  • wow i never even knew this genre existed. its so sick!

  • Jazz-Fusion SON!

  • I don´t understand why people think his playing is too random. Jazz is not for everybody. If you want some cliché music, go to listen some pop rock, you´ll get what you´re searching for.

  • hey just cos someone doesnt like the chromatic stuff and the changes doesnt mean they want boring britney spears style rubbish.

i quite like this but i can definitly see why a lot of people wouldnt.

  • I know what you mean, you have to acquaint your ear to jazz's difference in harmony a whole lot. Took me about 8 months of listening to Jaco Pastorius stuff as a young teenager before I could really start appreciating some of the tunes and other jazz stuff in general.

I do think though Greg Howe is awesome, he is doing maybe a lot of not very melodic shredding for a little too long for most people, would probably have sounded better with more melodic parts. I still love this version though.

  • A grotesque interpretation of coherent jazz theory. If obscurity is the aim then this should certainly suit your fancy.

  • @Hellirun didn't you answer your own question?? haha greg rules

  • @Hellirun

He's playing is pretty random even compared to a lot of jazz musicians. You can still play jazz and play more melodically than this. Like John McLaughlin, or Keiko Matsui (the latter if you dig the keys).

I'm not saying this is bad at all, I'm just saying people are reasonable in saying it's a bit random - even for jazz.

By the way - why hate pop rock? Don't be so arrogant, and try to enjoy more styles of music; it's more enjoyment for you, so why miss out just because of ego?

  • @DugFreely saying that some kind of music is basic and cliché doesn´t mean I don´t enjoy it once in a while. Maybe his playing is random for you, maybe it´s not for him, you just probably don´t have the ability to understand it at that point. Maybe you will come back later and realize you can then.

  • @Hellirun

That's what I'm saying though - there are many other jazz musicians who play complex arrangements while still maintaining appeal to the common listener. He is "random" for those people, such as myself. I mean, I know his playing is extremely calculated, but from the listening standpoint it seems random to an uneducated listener - which takes away from the melody, and thus the emotion.

  • @DugFreely

Are you saying this piece has no emotion? I mean, sure, the guys aren't jumping about or anything, but they are REALLY feeling the intensity! Otherwise, if you're saying you don't get the emotion, thats fine. Melody does not mean emotion - what about all the other musical concepts? Rhythm, tone, dynamics, etc. all contribute to what you hear and feel.

  • @bobulibobium

Oh no, of course not. I'm just saying an uneducated listener such as myself, wouldn't have the musical background to understand all the complex changes going on in the song, so we may not feel the emotion, ya know; ride the same wave that others do when they hear the song.

  • @Hellirun I HATE WHEN PEOPLE SAID THAT THE JAZZ IS NOT FOR EVERYBODY AND IS MORE ESPECIAL THAN OTHER KIND OF MUSIC, ALL TIPES OF MUSIC ARE SPECIAL, exept some ones. (Reggaeaton. ULTRA pop Repetitive rock.)

  • @davixelmax it is not for everybody. because people are moaning about stuff that ain't bieberiffic enough. so deal with it. you might understand jazz, or you might not. but deal with the fact that some people are too caught up with junior high school pop love songs to even want to dissect jazz, but rather labeling it "random notes being hit".

  • @Hellirun Well, in comparison to most other styles, it is at times completely random. Improvisation really doesn't leave room for much else. But that's what jazz is, pure creation, so next time someone says it's too random, I would just say "Very true."

  • @ThePiperPunk No.

When I hear people trying to belittle jazz or jazz-fusion calling the phrasing "random", they imply that it doesn't require any musical talent to be able to play this style of music.

I respectfully disagree with your opinion, but although some of the improvisation part of jazz is "spur of the moment", you have to have some serious chops to even know how to be in the pocket!

  • @vampiroangelico Yes.

At times in any given jazz peice, there could be parts being improv'd by all players in the room, it creates a random, yet structured type of music the can encompass many styles. I feel very strongly that the using ur chops to create random moments that have some good structure is what jazz is. And being in the pocket is important even in pop.

  • @ThePiperPunk Being in the pocket is important in all music styles.

One reason why I enjoy playing fusion more than I do playing other music styles with the different bands I'm with, is because I enjoy more creative freedom. BUT, however, I have to make sure I'm playing with musicians I get along with, who share my same love for creating beautiful, tasteful, intelligent music for the audience to enjoy, as opposed to just mere show-off arrogant speed exercises, like 99% of metal guitarists....

  • @vampiroangelico I'm a guitarist w/ arrogant speed excercises, my last band was a metal band but I'm getting into fusion now.

  • @TheFigueroa007 Good for you. You're about to open up your music vocabulary and your skills will drastically improve.

    :-)

  • @vampiroangelico

    Well thought, respectful reply.

  • I think greg is totally amazing but I just cant stand this style sorry. Its too random st sanders could prob overdubb it and it would sound the same

  • This is amazing!

  • He really great to play fastly somethin to tell absolutely nothin. - he surely great pro but there's no emo in this stuff.

anyway, i like the way he has fun breaking up jazz patterns.

  • Aw man this is howe playing with sakurai from the album gentle hearts... man i love that album. wonderland in the sky was a fantastic song i recommend everyone hear that at least once in their life

  • One word for these guys:

    Godly!

  • Man these solos are just unreal

  • Seriously I don't think one could listen to this stuff with any common sense and then go and turn on the radio and say " Holy shit this is really fresh and in the pocket stuff, gosh Miley Cirus is ground breaking".

  • fuck! this is hot..b.b king will flip to this.. damn this is more cool than spike lee doing the right thing.

  • You are my new hero. Great comment +1.

  • These "people" have no respect for music!

  • what the fuck are you talking bout? you little bitch. greg howe kicks your ass so hard

  • I prefer to think mess1ahh is being ironic = )

  • dude do you even know what ironic means haha

  • Highlights:

Akiro gettin' loose like he knows some life affirming secret that we don'tt at 1:40

Greg quite simply tearin' us a new one at 5:20 (btw - the growth he's shown as a guitarist is amazing, rising from Varney's neo-classical shred land to become a player who inspires knowing looks among guatists of all skill levels)

Dennis Chambers puttin' fools in they place (as only a legend can) at 7:20

Tetsuo (whole clip) obviously possessed by the spirit of Jaco....

  • great!!!

  • Awesome!!! Jaco is smiling.....

  • Jaco and Joe.

  • Fushky moothy

  • agreed. had some cool parts...

  • They're Great

  • ha! that bass player eats basses for breakfast

  • It's the name of the song I believe.

  • Hahaha, yes, it's the name of the song. LMAO

  • failure.

  • Lol incorrect. This is so deep in the pocket. We've got Some great players here.

  • I've never replied to anything on youtube you but honestly the severity of that comment requires some attention.... Jaco Pastorius? you know what fusion is, just check Jaco out. Innovator years ahead of his time so much so there's still not been a bass player around scince him that captures what Jaco did at first I didn't get the hype it took some time but Jaco my friend is a legend for what he did and still does for many people

  • agree

  • Jaco is the best !

  • the straight-ahead part (1:14-2:15) is crazy

  • nevermind

  • Is that gregg howe on geetar

  • It's not random , ... music is not random.

  • Wow this is very Educational!

  • Wow this is educational!

  • It's a Jaco tune played in the style of early Tribal Tech. I love it...I just wish you could hear this style in clubs. For that matter, it would be nice if you saw videos of this or heard it on the radio. I guess you have to talk to a beat to get any airtime these days-DOH!

  • more like progressive jazz...

  • A bit boring... like in "deluxe" elevator.

  • don t really like it

  • Nice guitar. I love maple fingerboards

  • seein that guitar actually made me want an esp xD

  • Nice leathergloves. I love freaky japanese.

  • I thought it wasnt Jaco at first when it went to the group solo....but that was only cuz I only heard the Big Band version when I heard the other version I Realized what it was!!!! Damn Jaco scares me And b4 i die, hopefully, they will be able to put my name in the same sentence as the great Jaco Pastorius!!!

  • haha slightly less melodic than the other tracks

    but i dig the groove

  • i know what you mean, man. the title does kinda mislead O_o
